Another promotion that Lenovo sent me this morning. Use coupon code OZX260 to get $700 off the current price from the following ThinkPad X260:

  • Intel Core i5-6200U
  • 12.5" screen
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 8GB DDR4 RAM
  • 256GB SATA3 SSD

The default configuration ($1049) comes with 1366x768 TN display which is an abomination. Fortunately the whole system is very customisable where you can upgrade to 12.5" IPS display with Full HD for $131 more. Don't bother upgrade RAM or storage as X260 is very user-serviceable so you can source the components elsewhere. It's ultimately the road warrior's ThinkPad with docking station support & replaceable/hotswappable batteries. Get the 6-cell battery ($33 extra & a little bit bulky) to get 15+ hours battery life.

Have one of these for work and agree the standard screen is horrid. Worth the 1920x1080 IPS screen upgrade.

Otherwise it's a brilliant and very portable little machine.

    • I have an x240 for work,
      the screen is horrible,
the "clicky" (like a cracker left in a humid environment is clicky) Trackpad is abominable,
the stability/performance of my 4Gb Core i5-5200U machine is dismal,
and to add RAM, you need to disassemble the entire machine.

Shortly after getting it, I requested that I get my old HP back from IT but it had already been returned.
I've had it 18 months now and hate it even more than the first few weeks.
Could be a Lemon, but that doesn't explain why everyone else in my office dislike's theirs as well.

Sounds like they may have fixed the user serviceability side, so hopefully they've fixed all the other complaints.

X240 is probably one of the worse with no actual buttons for both the trackpad and trackpoint… With X260 you do need to take the removable battery + bottom panel off to access the RAM, but Lenovo has the whole service manual / step-by-step on their site.

        • Yeah x240 and t440 worst generation for trackpad. Glad they listened to the consumer and fixed it in the next generations

        • @Synize: T430 and retro KB mod is one of the best Thinkpads imho

        • @Droidyy: Agree with that, i'd still use a t430 if you swap out the hdd for an ssd and install win10.

  • Nice, this price is definitely much better value than Dell Lat. 7000 series ultrabooks.

7% cashback at Cashrewards is a rather nice kickback.

By adding the 6-cell battery does that mean it's a portable plug in battery to carry around or will that replace the internal standard battery?
What would the whole thing weigh do you think with 6-cell battery and upgrade FHD screen?

    • weight, with normal battery
      1.34 kg

      + extended battery equipped
      1.63 KG

the charger weighs 290 grams (0.29 kg)

BTW 1.63 KG is also about how much the Dell latitude-e7270 weighs

Great description. Surprised that they even make it with a 1366x768 TN display like it's 2002.

Still using my x230, they just last forever, just gotta replace the battery every 2 years.

    • My x220 is still going Strong.
But battery can only last for 1 and half hours.

    • I'm using x230 right now!

Looks like Xiaomi air deal 13 is better choice compare to this one? Agree? Not along with the xiaomi air 12

    Lenovo is really overpriced

    • +2

      That warranty though…

    • +2

Discrete GPU on the Xiaomi, slightly less weight plus it doesn't look incredibly ugly.

Saving of $280 or so. 3 months "warranty" though.

      • The thing is if you drop a Thinkpad it doesn't shatter into badly made pieces

Those buying ThinkPad X-series and those buying Xiaomi Air might be distinct sets, but the intersection would be very small. Comparing to X260, Xiaomi

      • Likely not as well constructed as X260 with its magnesium-alloy frame.
      • RAM not upgradable
      • Battery not removable
      • No docking station support
      • Only HDMI out
      • Likely worse keyboard than the ThinkPad
      • No TrackPoint :)

As of the ugliness — you use them in the boardroom, not in the local cafe :)

      • What would you need the extra ram for? There's hardly times you need more than 8gb ddr4 unless you're running VMs. It's hardly an issue for a laptop that was meant to be used as a mobile work platform. I do agree that the thinkpad has better battery though (yay for removable), and probably better build too.

        • unless you're running VMs…

          'nuff said.

At the end of day everyone's requirement is a bit different. X260 allows much customisation on screen, CPU, battery, smart card reader, LTE modem etc (all with extra $$$). Whereas with Xiaomi Air (and many modern ultrabooks) you are stuck with the configuration.

        • @scotty: oh I'm not denying that. With this price, the x260 is a fantastic deal, arguably than mi13. Especially the reflective screen, my biggest complaint about the mi13.

The ugliness has a beauty all of its own!

      • I think if you're in the boardroom you'd be looking at a high yield investment laptop

  • i have an x250. it has replaced xps 13 as my working horse. the screen (fhd) is good (not as good as qhd of my xps13 though) and really love the fingerprint thingy.the battery life is ok (4-5hrs). the laptop is thick and on the heavy side (a little bulky), but still very portable (thanks to the smallish 12.5" screen)

  • This deal is still available https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/294797?page=1#comment [ASUS Zenbook UX330UA-AH54 13.3" Ultra-Slim Laptop (Core i5-7200U, 8GB DDR3, 256GB SSD) $718.34USD ~ $940AUD Delivered @ Amazon]

Got mine a couple of weeks back. The keyboard is not as good as the Lenovo but the screen is bigger for those who don't want to squint. It also has a USB-C.

Would have gone for a Lenovo T460s if it was available at the previous best of $1000.

  • any cheap docking for this?

  • If it had Thunderbolt that'd push me over the line!

  • Damn, just bought one of these back in early January. Excellent laptop, no complaints (got a 128GB though) - other than the 12.5 inch screen not being particularly large, but external monitor/s solve that problem.

  • got this exact laptop from graysonline ebay for $530. it is pretty good for the price i paid….and yes the screen resolution is quite or below average…but more than enough for uni assignments

    • +1

You can upgrade the display yourself. It's actually pretty easy.

The hard part is finding a supplier that sells it for a reasonable price.

  • +1

Got this at work, the i7 version and it runs like a 386. Work upgraded me from the x230. Not sure what the issue could be. No issues with the x230 but this x260 is so slow makes my eyes water.

Oh and these have two batteries. One that is user replaceable the other you need to remove parts to get to it.

It's okay for basic stuff I have a HP Pavilion at home which is way better even plays some games it's on sale at HP $1099-$1199 (depending on size of the screen you want) with a $150 prepaid Visa card as a gift.

    • Did you get it with a standard HDD or an SSD? Shouldn't be that bad ://.

    • +1

Coz x230 does not has those U series CPUs.
Those U series CPUs are super slow.

    • "Not sure what the issue could be."

Windows and Enterprise Anti-Virus solutions. Enough said.

  • U series has always been overpriced and pretty useless.

I got a cherry trail atom at its price you can't really complain.

  • Can someone explain to me what "12.5" IPS FHD" means?

I know it's a 12.5 inch screen but what does IPS and FHD mean?

    • IPS is your standard type of LCD these days. It stands for in-plane switching. They're in everything from iPhones to tablets to laptops and desktop monitors.

FHD stands for Full High Definition which really means 1080p (1920x1080)

  • Why is the '3 Cell Li-Ion Front Battery (23.2Wh)' considered an $55? I thought it was automatically built in? — Is it the 'internal battery' that is frequently mentioned as standard in most reviews, on which the 'external' battery is plonked on top of?
