Samsung 850 Evo SSD for My iMac Upgrade

Hi

Ok, so I'm in the middle of building another nice gaming PC for myself when my old 2011 iMac crashed :(

Luckily I back up everything daily, so no problem there. However, now I am booting from USB external, and I want to replace the internal HDD with an SSD.

Yer yer I know, it's an iMac , but long story short…. I need a working Apple in the house. So rather than go buy a crazy overpriced new one I thought surely I can just fix it myself.

I've ordered an upgrade kit so I can pull the glass off and get the broken HDD out etc…

But I was wanting to know if there are any current bargains on a Samsung 850 Evo HDD 250 or 500 GB ? I prefer Australia unless shipping won't take weeks from O/S.

They seem to be currently around $230-$250 (500gb) in Australia from my very brief research just now.

I also found this price for 250gb:

Has anyone heard of or dealt with them?

Cheers

  • They are banned from ozbargain indefinitely because of some very shonky trading practices..

SSD's come up on special like 2-3 times a month. Just be patient. However the number of SSD deals have declined due to a shortage of NAND flash which drives up prices

you might consider ebay 20% off deals and most places like Shopping Express, Futu_Online, MSY to have the best prices around .

  • Checked past Samsung 850 EVO deals? First deal was posted more than 2 years ago so it's quite an old model.

Good to hear someone else is doing this - I've been commissioned to replace the HDD in a Late-2012 21.5" iMac. You can pick up a 525gb Crucial MX300 SSD for ~$200 here and that would suffice.

  • I recently purchased two Phantom 4 batteries from Android enjoyed for $140 each. Cheapest around. They came pretty quick and are genuine batteries. Maybe I got extremely lucky.

I also recently added a ssd to my 2011 imac 27". It wasn't straight forward to add an extra hdd, but ifixit seem to sell the kits online to do it. They also have YouTube videos to show how to do it. I purchased a kit and it came with everything. Tools, cables, suction cups to remove screen.

  • Thanks everyone for your replies :)

I ended up getting 250gb Samsung Evo 850 from Computer Alliance for $152 :) delivered.

And an installation kit from Maxfixit for $129.

So hopefully this will get my old Imac back to life.

Especially since today i signed up to NBN FTTP 100/40 900gb plan from Telstra…no setup fee…free modem/router…free home phone…and some kind of TV entertainment stuff. For $95pm.

Seemed reasonable by comparison to others.

    • Hey, I'm curious how you went with your upgrade. I've got an iMac 27" 2011 (12,2) and will upgrade the 1TBHDD to 1TB MX300 SSD using the OWC Complete HDD Upgrade for All 2011 iMacs (https://www.ramcity.com.au/buy/owc-complete-hard-drive-upgra…)(IM-115) for $93 with shipping. I've read that it's not necessary to remove anything else after the V-sync cable and to simply use pens to hold the LCD high enough to reach the HDD. is this the case for you?

Hi. I actually removed the whole lcd because i wanted to give everything a good clean. Lots of dust built up on fans etc. It also made access very simple to the hdd. When i removed the hdd i removed its holding bracket and used that bracket with a couple of screws to keep the ssd in place. Took me a few minutes to work out that the new temp sensor was in-line, so i put it between the end of the hdd cable and the ssd socket. Easy :)

        • Awesome! I wasn't game enough to disconnect and lift the unexpectedly heavy LCD panel out to I used the pen method. Now my iMac is actually useable within seconds of booting instead of the 15 mins before. Since the SSD is silent I can now hear the fans that are wearing out. Guess I'll try and do what you did one day :-/

Were the fans easy to remove?

    • Update: Telstra now give me free very fast 100/40 speed boost for free for term of contract :)
      And
I swapped basic 2lan port router for new gateway max 2 with 4 lan ports and supposedly better internals…I'm not sure but all seems to be ok now.
