Because not everyone is fortunate enough to have ground to plant something, ie: live in an apartment

the house i bought has a paved backyard, I was looking into getting one of these instead of digging up the paving.
It retains water more effectively.
If you water in-ground soil, evaporation occurs, water may flow elsewhere or other plants soak it all up. Also when you initially put in soil, you cover it up and ensure all weeds and etc are dead so thereafter your raised garden bed only contains what you intend to grow.

I have 2 of the Aldi ones from last sale (virtually identical product), it's great for 'No dig gardening' (use google to find out about), and grew some great tomatoes and chilli etc this summer.
