Selling graphics card on eBay. What do I need to do to protect myself?

Hi all,

I have listed a graphics card on eBay and it just got a bid. Now I would like to know what I need to do to protect myself from risk.

I know eBay tends to side with buyers - so what do I need to do to ensure that I don't get scammed?

I have recorded it to make sure there is evidence of it working. I plan to take photos of the serial number and anything associated.

What else should I do?

Cheers

From what I have read if they aren't happy with the performance of the card they can just smash it and say u sent a broken one.
Then you get returned a broken card and you have to refund them.

I know it limits buyers but with most ebay sales that I have done I do pickup only and get them to pay cash. They can't do a SNAD (significantly not as described) when they inspect the item and pick it up.

    • Cash on pickup is safer in that sense, but, OP, keep in mind that you'll almost definitely get a lot less money for it, since that drastically limits who can buy it to a tiny percentage of those who could have with post.

I've sold GPUs on ebay before without issues, if that helps ease your mind. Just packed them carefully and sent with registered post.

  • Always use antistatic gloves.

  • Not much you can do if posting. They can just claim not as described/faulty and will get a refund. Ebay/PayPal don't care about any evidence you have.

Unless you have enough evidence to successful sue eBay, the seller or even AusPost, it's very difficult to be bullet-proof as a seller cause of eBay's "buyers always win" policy.

Best thing to do I might suggest you is to limit your buyers to those with a good purchase history/feedback even though that might greatly lower your chances of a sale.

Thanks for the advice - guess I just got to hope that I don't get screwed.

Not much more I can do

    • I went with scumtree when I sold my 1060. There's a lot of people lowballing that you have to be polite to but there are the occasional genuine buyers that aren't trying to rip you too much.

      • I had a good offer on gumtree but I didn't take the $500, contacted the dude today and he got another card. It's all good I don't have an issue keeping my GPU. I'll look at doing sli later

Take pictures of the card including the serial number before sending it.

I'm not sure how good pictures as evidence would be if a case had to be opened, but it'll at least help you confirm/deny any thoughts you might have of them switching it with their own non-working one and trying to get a refund.

      Definitely worth doing.

I've even filmed myself putting the card into it's shipping box undamaged, with serial number and padding showing clearly, and sealing the box and handing it to the post office staff.

Let buyer know you did this, to discourage potential scammers (In a friendly way, not accusatory, like this: "Hey mate! Your card is on the way! I even made a video for you! (link) They said it will take up to X days! Hope you enjoy it!")

  • If you are that concerned about being scammed maybe you should of thought about that before listing on ebay. Try gumtree, and cash on pickup instead.

    • Gumtree adds no protection. You can do cash-on-pickup on ebay. (But you'll obviously get far fewer bidders, and so a much lower price, though not as low as gumtree, generally).

  • Never sell anything on Ebay you aren't willing to lose, that is the golden rule.

Having said that I have heard of people Go-Pro recording themselves going through testing the product works, to putting in the envelope and then putting it in the mail box all in the same video and then having Ebay accept that as evidence.

  • Thanks again for all the advice. I actually pulled the ad as I did not want to take the risk. I called eBay and they pretty much confirmed that the seller has no recourse if the buyer is a lier or a scammer.

Fully thing was I was selling a GTX 1070 for $580 - when you could buy it new for $535. This rang a lot of warning bells and it is best for all parties if I keep it.

If the buyer is upset and messages me, I will point him towards the sales listed on this site.

  • what about selling only to people with %100 & have been on ebay 2yrs or more ?

looking at the buyers feedback is basically useless as sellers cant leave negative feedback

      • "looking at the buyers feedback is basically useless as sellers cant leave negative feedback"
