Can't Decide on a Laptop (Budget $1400)

Looking to buy a new laptop for university because my current one is dying

Not quite sure what specs are good, but I was thinking of having at least

  • Need an SSD
  • I want to flip it 360, Kind of like the Lenovo Yoga 900
  • Light
  • Touchscreen
  • Good battery life, I'd be using it for the entire day at Uni
  • Hinge (I have a surface pro, and the lack of hinge hurts)

I'd mainly be using it for studying and maybe some music, so no need for gaming

I'd probably want to spend at most $1400

I don't mind what brand, but I need windows so no Apple

Thanks in advance

  • I think it's always best to see your university IT man Many uni's have a recommended supplier with student discounts, while you may not get the same flip 360 features or manufacturer you'd like to have, there may be good deals

    • I checked mine, There's something about a student discounts on Apple… which I'm not looking for :(, Thanks for the reply

  • surface pro 4

    • Ah, that's what I have now. I forgot to mention that I wanted the hinge, Thanks for the reply though :)

      • Surface Book

        • out of OP's price range

  • fujitsu

    • Fujitsu what? Do you have a model in mind?

    I like Dell for reliability.

    Here's their current sale:

I see a few "flip" styles with SSD for well under $1000. Since you're not gaming, then unless you're doing serious CAD or photoship or VMs or film editing or something on it, i5 and i7 are overkill. I'd say 4GB of RAM and i3 will be plenty.

You could probably get something around half your budget that satisfies all your needs.

    Here's the rest of them:

Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro — currently on clearance sale at $999.

    • Core M-5Y71
    • 13.3" QHD+ (3200x1800)
    • 8GB RAM
    • 256GB SSD
    • 360 degree hinge
    • 9 hour battery
    • 1.19kg

It fits all your requirement, although Core M-5Y71 might be on the slow side.

Wow Surface Pro 4 already dying!? That is less than 2 years old lifespan. Incredibly short life. Either the product is really unreliable/not-durable. Or you must have been really using it!

In any case, with your budget, I would go with Thinkpad Yoga 460. I have that before. Really nice usability wise. A real workhorse of a notebook/convertible.

    • OP wasn't saying Surface Pro 4 is dying, but rather "unsuitable" due to lack of hinge.

My daughter got a Surface Pro 4 from school (as part of expensive private school package, ouch). However most of the time she uses it as a laptop, or docked to 24" monitor with external keyboard & mouse. It's just not suitable for those who are sitting down most of the time doing lots of typing.
