Sigma AF 70-300mm - $160

Hey everyone, I just wanted to know peoples thoughts about the Sigma AF 70-300mm.
With the current ebay sales, multiple stores have them for around $160 + Postage or free store pick up.

I just want to know has anyone used them before? and their thoughts? I've seen really good reviews of it so far.
Cheers

  • Well. I guess it's better than nothing. No HSM means it will be noisy when focusing and no IS/OS means it will be shaky at 300mm. Better off saving for a better lens if you can and hold out for a better deal. I got my 55-300mm nikon for $236 in 2015.

    • Can that be used as a Macro as well?

      • Nope. Minimum focus distance is 1.4 metres. 0.28 max ratio. I guess it's a different matter if you want to only do macro.

        • The Sigma claims to be able to do both pretty well. It would be interesting to see how true this is though.

  • +1

There are 2 versions available. One is called APO-DG (more expensive) and the other does not have APO mentopned.
APO DG is the better version and is comparatively more expensive.(by around$50-$75)
It can also be identified by the red ring around the lens.

I was almost close to buying it and have done all the research.
It is a bit softer around the edges (just like other brands in the similar price range) , but worth the $200-$250.

  • If you want macro on Sigma, you might need something like this. I own one for my Nikon. Not a photography expert but I'm pretty happy with it, especially when I got it at $99 LOL.

    Pros:
    * 2 in 1 - Macro & Zoom lens

    Cons:
    * Heavy, you need tripod & remote control at all time for macro shots.
    * A bit fiddly when setting up macro function. You need to extend the barrel to the fullest length.

Give you an idea how close the lens can go for macro'ing. Approx 800mm as close as I can to get a focus. Lower than that I need an extension tube.

    • Wow thats a bargain, Cheapest I could find was $160

  • I would prefer Tamron 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di VC USD. image stabilization is quite important for tele lens
