WHAT IS KOMBUCHA?

Kombucha is a tea-based drink, made through a fermentation process involving a natural culture. The process results in the production of healthy, living bacteria known as probiotics, which are great for your gut, aid digestion and are widely believed to have energising, detoxifying and healing properties.

Be sure to thank the staff for funding this freebie.

I think you fund it yourself via the tiny burgers that cost double what they should.

      • +1

"tiny burgers" - what vs a massive Big Mac?

        • +2

Versus a proper big burger at any real burger shop (don't worry McD's or HJ doesn't come into the equation), which will cost about the same and not leave me starving after eating it. I've eaten 2x grill'd meals before when they were half price.

I prefer Rocket Burger near Flinders Street, $12. The burger on it's own is actually a meal.

@wetsandwich: Usually i'm satisfied with one burger and sharing one chips between two of us. Especially the Almighty seems to hit the spot. - And maybe it's part of the 'healthy' that you don't overeat. But yes, a tad on the pricey side.

        • @wetsandwich:

Haven't had a Rocket, but yep, an Almighty fills me up nicely. Also, Grilld use the far more expensive grass-fed beef, which is healthier. So at ~$14 it sounds like it's in the same ballpark.

"dear lord jebus, thank you for the fair work commission and lower penalty rates for putting this yuppie drank on our table."

      • +1

The staff don't get penalty rates at Grill'd

  • Edit: I was thinking of the wrong drink

Just had one. Thought it was apple cider (alcoholic) - my mistake.
It was ok but is not sweet at all - has no sugar. And live cultures.

    • +4

Yeah I actually think they taste nice. I'm not really into super sweet drinks.

      live cultures

      Pauline's not gonna like that…

Kombucha is awesome, though as per anything good for you in Australia it's horribly overpriced.

Very easy to make your own, just need the starter culture and its like making any dough/yoghurt etc.

Much harder to make it as low-carb as they do though…you sorta need to know the rate/volume of conversion for your particular strain.

    • Where did you get the starter culture from?

      • A local health food shop for myself, but if you google Kombucha starter culture you'll find a few Aussie stores that deliver. Just make sure you have a suitable spot to grow the culture (stable, not too much light, covered etc).

There's so valid scientific evidence that Kombucha is good for you, and studies have not established any benefits to gut health which is the main claim of Kombucha advocates.

Kombucha is a delicious drink and I enjoy it as a beverage, but a nice drink of water would be a healthier alternative, and if you get it from the tap, it is entirely free.

Ehhh any monoculture drink or food won't really do much to help the enormously complex microbiome of the digestive tract.

But fermented drinks and foods have historically been used for digestion and well-being, not that I want to appeal to any hippy-shenanigans because AFAIK no one has even done any clinical trials for it. Its more of a variety of life healthy alternative for me, rather than drinking soft drinks or overly sugared juices, I get to drink a pretty tasty bubbly tea that might be good for me.

        I don't see a downside.

  • I love Kombucha..Just expensive and no Grill'd here (so I believe)…Love their Elderflower Kombucha. Or the original is pretty good but I usually get the big bottle of it as a treat as it's too expensive to have on the reg.

  • The strawberry one's nice, it's like a sugar less one though, almost.

  • Hipster drink that tastes like pretty ordinary haha

  • Haven't had grill'd since they had the free beer with burger last summer. That made grill'd worth the price.
