too much for a 2GB RAM netbook :(

    • +5

Netbook Only have Atom processor, not Core 2 Duo chip. C2D is much powerful.

  • -1

might be good but too expensive

  • -1

He's right tho.. it might have a C2D but it's a netbook really, just cos of its size. Bit of an awkward machine really.. too small for a laptop and too powerful for a netbook. If i wanted a proper laptop I'd be getting one bigger than 11.6", that's for sure.. not sure there is a market for this.. too overpriced really.

    • +4

This is a stream of Ultraportable ULV laptop, for people who want mobility i.e not carry a heavy laptop around. Want size of a netbook but want to do more work than what a netbook can do.

Normal laptop cannot last for 8+hrs.

    • Agreed, however looks like it has propper Win7 (not starter) and 3 years warranty.
I rekon it is very good value, but can't quite bring myself to call it a bargain.

I might be bias against it as its price / form factor dont interest me.

      I'd like to see a $278 delivered Asus E1001P 6 cell again, thats what i'm after :P

        • Almost.

The N270 is aged, even the N280 is.
The N450 with the slightly higher res 1024x600 screen and 11 hour claimed battery life was the deal i sadly missed.

Still for under $300 that Lenovo isn't too bad.

  • i imported this one from newegg US last year for 600$ shipped. not a bargain any way i look at it.

    • Sorry cannot compare to import as it needs to ship back overseas for warranty.

This one has 3 yrs Aus Acer Local Warranty.

  • Unfortunately I'd have to say it's not a great deal either. It's middle ground.

Same thing, 4gb, 320gb hdd, better brand, free optical drive, $699pp http://www.centrecom.com.au/catalog/product_info.php?sort=2a…

When the X320 was advertised in this forum, centrecom had it for $639 and samsung had a free additional power brick by redemption.

I'd go with the X320, the optical/extra 2gb/brand are worth the price of post. Even now the price is up and you can't get the spare power brick.

@ above post: There is a market for this. People who want battery life but something better than a single low speed core. Such machines are perfect for my tastes.

    • +3

Completely different class of machine mate, you're comparing apples to oranges!

      • -1

Sorry? It's almost identical! Or are we talking about 0.4kg difference?

        • +2

Talking about the size difference. 13.3 is borderline full laptop size.

  • +1

you pay a lot more for the 3yr warranty

end of the day i'd rather pay more for a 3yr warranty and suffer the lesser ram (which you can upg. for $50)

    • That is correct, Normal Acer laptop carry 1 year standard pickup warranty. An uplift to 3 years Acer Pickup and Return warranty cost $150 to $160.

This laptop has been uplifted for FREE.

  • Ah, missed the warranty. Yes that certainly helps justify it.

  • +1

I think its an ok deal. I wanted one of these last december for travel and doing a bit of gaming but ended up getting a toshiba NB200 instead. One of the reasons was the warrenty issue if I bought it from Amazon. This has a local 3 year warrenty. If I saw this last year, I would have bought it instantly.

    • +2

Go find me a 11" (dont care about 13" or 15") laptop with those specs for under 700. Sure this notebook might not appeal to you (it doesnt appeal to me either to be honest), but like someone up there said, there is a market out there for it, and for them it is a "bargain".

      • -1

Samsung N510 actually outperforms this laptop with a lower price point. The old ULV laptops are very outdated opt for a newer Atom + ION Power laptop and you've got a laptop that can do 1080p and can even play some games like MW

I used to have one and that was used for GPU Accelerated Video/Photography editing. Even played WOW and i bought it for $600 from JB

Theres newer Dual Core Atoms and ION2 graphics out there

Hence my statement this laptop is not a bargain if anything its standard pricing but hey if you want dated technology for top dollar buy it

        • For gaming, yes ION platform beats it - but for just raw cpu crunching - this cpu wins hands down. Even beats the dual core atom which is actually a desktop cpu. Asus is just deliberately putting it in a laptop, obviously power draw is not going to be optimized. FYI the dual core atom runs at 8 watts. the su7300 runs at 10w but its more than 20% faster, so watt for watt it is better.

        • cheapest i can find for the N510 is 750+shipping, however point taken. BUT I still think 1.3Ghz C2D> n280 1.66Ghz. Your points are valid, but that doesn't make this any less of a bargain.

edit: Voter1, you lost me with those numbers there near the end xD

          • @fellator: ha - for laptops these days, performance should be measured for every watt of power consumed.
su7300 eats 10w scores around 900+ on cpumark
dual core atom d330 eats 8w and scores 600+.

approx 33% improvement for 20% increase in power. :)
this cpu i believe is still the best low power cpu that is enough for everyday tasks. the i7 ULV cpu's are about to be released soon though (but probably not at such a low price yet)

            • @voter1: The i5 ULVs are already out there. Only if these are at this price…

      • Asus 1201PN. I don't think this is a bargain. It's merely comparitive.

  • +4

Ok, the point that always gets missed on OzB is this:
Is the price being offered for product "A" a substantial discount over normal street price for product "A"?
NOT, is product "B" better, worse or cheaper…that is irrelevant!

Now, cheapest for this model, in Australia, on Staticice seems to be ~$1037; therefore this represents approximately $300 saved for this product, that's 30%; kinda seems ok to me as bargains go! However, it's up to everyone to make up their own mind! ;)

    • -2

      I disagree.

This would make any of the range of models that the likes of Officeworks have that only they carry a bargain any time they had a minor special or clearance. Comparing it to equivalents is an important option.

I've voted positive on this deal because I can't find a decent equivalent of greater value, not because this is the cheapest this specific model is (the closest I could find being the Asus UL30A).

That said, I'd call it a netbook. Low weight, no optical, small, not useful for much more than internet & word processing (SU7300 may be C2D, but it's not much more powerful than a Celeron M 900MHz).

EDIT Hah, after posting that I've found this Samsung 13.3" SU7300 4GB 320GB for $699. Probably slighty worse battery life and won't have the 3 year warranty, but I'd consider everything else advantageous.

      • +2

trying to compare this to a M 900mnhz says everything about what you know on this subject

        http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_lookup.php?cpu=Intel+SU7300+…
        http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_lookup.php?cpu=Intel+Celeron…

If you're not good at reading graphs - its 3-4x faster…

        • Yes, and if you're silly enough to only look at a single non-practical benchmark, you might get that impression.

          http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Processors-Benchmarklist…

          • @[Deactivated]: im sorry I dont see your point? I was joking when I said if you're not good at reading graphs but apparently not.

            Intel Celeron M 900mhz
            super pi 1m : 94 sec (su7300 34sec)
            super pi 2m: 216 (su7300: 78)
            cinebench r10 single: 423 (su7300: 1462)

im no champion of that cpubenchmark site as I do think it is very synthetic orientated but I think its the largest database of cpu scores from over all generations and is user submitted and aggregated a bit like metacritic/rotten tomatoes. Each cpu score should compare ok relative to another cpu on that same list.

      • I bought the Samsung you're talking about. I returned it after 4 days. Some kind of disk error. I got a refund. From using the Samsung in those four days, I realised 13.3" is too big for me (wasn't very portable). Battery life was probably 5-6 hours (6 at most).

But yeah, I value the portability of 11.6" over the extra 2gb (which I would rarely use) and the extra 70gb of HDD. The USB ports of the samsung are only on the right side too, which was quite silly as the USB receiver for wireless mice can be quite long and would annoy right handed users (such as myself). And the overall design of the samsung felt a bit tacky and ugly to me compared to the acer laptop.

  • i don't know what's worse… all these misguided Ozbb nuffys who don't know much or this Rep who seems to be overzealous in trying to convert poor folk who wouldn't buy this stuff anyway.

I'd happily pay $200 more for a real warranty and a non Atom CPU which are complete garbage for any real work.

    Saying that I hate Acer.

    • +4

I dont think this rep is trying to "convert" anyone into buying this - he is just pointing out factual errors these nubby ozbb are making. Sure the market for this type of notebook is small, but as already mentioned, it is a bargain for those who are looking for an overpowered 11" lappy.

  • +2

this is a fantastic unit and those comparing with 'standard' laptops are misguided as to where this is positioned in the market, ie the comparison to the samsung earlier, that one is already 400g + heavier, works out to be a good 30-40% increase in weight on this particular machine. and that ULV series is NOT an atom, it is significantly faster, although its getting a little on the old side now

    this is a bargain

  • No black colour?

    • Only blue colour at the moment.

      • +1

        That's too bad

  • +4

And guys, this is actually a good deal. People who say "I won't pay 699$ for this 11.6" laptop because it's a netbook" don't know what they're on about.

    • +1

+1 to this comment, plus all the other people who know what they're talking about in comparing the bargain. Sometimes I think people are too keen to shoot down bargains because it doesn't fit in with what they think they know (which in this case, has been sweet f*k all) lol

    • +1

And to think just a few years ago, a proper laptop (before netbooks) got more expensive as they got smaller and lighter.

People need to also look at warranty (as well as the fact that it is NOT a netbook), it is really worth quite a bit. dell charges a lot of money for their extended warranty from 1 year to 3. ASUS extended warranty from 2 year to 3 costs around $99.

  • +1

fellator, sry to be off topic, but i noticed u purchased an asus N61JQ for $1200, could u upload the receipt? if i can get JB to price match it for $1200 i would buy it. thx

  • I also imported one of these last year, and it's a brilliant laptop. The battery lasts for 6 hours or more when watching movies on it, the processor's fast and I think it's a good size for someone wanting portability but still with decent performance. I also think $700 is a good price, more than I paid last year but like zettabyte points out, it's got a 3 year local warranty, so thumbs up from me

  • Also, you can claim this on the high school/primary school tax scheme (you get 50% of the price back). Not sure if you can do that if you import one. Of course, imported laptops would be cheaper but importing means hassles, longer waiting time (weeks!), import duties (if over $1000), sometimes warranty issues and the risk of the company not sending you the correct model (much harder to transfer back to them and then have them send you out a new one). Just wanted to point out a few things about importing that people may overlook.

  • -1

Just to point out that "ACER pickup and return service Courier"is not really as it says.
you have to package into a mailing box and go to the post office to post it(Prepaid ie Free) but still a hassle to queue up…

    • It will definitely help those couch potatoes though :)

    • +1

Courier Pickup or Post Office Drop Off* depend on which product it is. But this one is a Real Courier Pickup and Return to your door.

      • I recently had a monitor repaired by Acer, I can vouch for this; lodged the fault ticket online, had a response in less than a day, organised a time/date/address for pickup…picked up, repaired, returned in about 10 days total…yeah, I'd say they're fair dinkum about it! ;)

  • Also Real Weight: 1.44 kg (1810T) according to most reviews

    • We know which review you're referring to.

For extra 90gram, most review, they do it without taking off the plastic protection sleeve on top of laptop also on the screen. As well as the 8hrs+ sticker on left side of the screen, and other bits and pieces. That may explain some weight as well.

  • Definitely would not buy it for $1,035 on the website, but for $699 it's a good deal if you are looking for

    • Small portable notebook that has 1366x768 resolution
    • C2D processor
    • Long battery life

Equivalent Fujitsu Lifebook or Dell Inspiron 11z are more expensive (although comparing to Acer quality, these might be better).

    • I'll agree on one count, the Jitz do make a nice lappy! :)

Dell, on the other hand, are fairly unimpressive IME, no better in build quality than Acer; perhaps a fraction worse! Don't even get me started on HP!!! ;)

  • I bought one of these about a year ago on COTD for $750. Battery life is excellent. I've never been a fan of Acer, but it's actually not bad quality either. My main decision for getting the 11.5 inch was the full size keyboard, while still being very light.

    • How long does the batt last for you?

      • I've used it longer than 8 hours with low cpu usage, I've watched movies for around 5 hours on a plane once, (win7 reports 12 hours when fully charged and not doing much work, dont know how reliable that is though).

    • well… i also have this unit… i got one of these abt 12mths ago ($850) to replace my 10" asus netbook. i upgraded the ram to 4GB and it does an outstanding job as a portable laptop. it kills the atom netbooks in performance and features, and is comparable to a normal notebook in most ways. Its not a fantastic bargain in my eyes, and it is getting a little dated… but, i can say its still a VERY good unit… the battery life and size make it all worthwhile…

  • sorry, my bad… i actually have the 1810TZ (Intel Pentium Dual Core SU4100 1.3 GHz) very similar though…

  • $700 for a C2D laptop is not a good price, no matter the size.

  • These laptops CAN NOT play Blurays or Bluray 1080p rips ( mkv ) or avi's they just dont have the CPU power to do it! hope this helps anyone thinking about buying it as a movie player

    • Don't undereestimate C2D with 3Mb cache,

This review play a FULL HD 1080p MPEG-4 file to a much bigger 32" LCD TV -
played smoothly for the most part, only minor brief pauses for little area.

If view from build in 11.6" HD LED screen, performance will be better too.

      http://www.laptopmag.com/review/laptop/acer-aspire-1810t.asp…

      • Hi Z-Rep.

I have the 1080TZ which was purchased from Clive Peeters for $560. (Some bizarre eco-blues sale that seemed to be going on and their whole computer dept was emptied a few months back.)

I'm impressed with this unit on a number of fronts. My question is, in simple terms, are you aware of the difference between the unit you are selling (1080T) and the 1080TZ model?

And the model you are selling is definitely the 1080T?

        Thank you.

        • yes, there are different models and variation. This one is AS1810T-732G25n 1810T Timeline.

          • @Zettabyte Computers: And are you aware of the difference between the machines?

Some web sites seem to intimate that this model doesn't necessarily run a core duo.

              • @Zettabyte Computers: Thanks Z.

Did a fair amount of research and happily purchased.

If anyone has any questions (as I do have the TZ model) please let me know.

For the question below (gguu) the answer is yes, though glossy is perhaps not the right word. The screen is nice to look at and like any small screen can only really be watched within a suitable field of view.

  • Just like to compliment on the turn around time
Ordered at 11am and shipped by 2pm
    Thanks!

    • is the scree glossy? can not find it out online…

    • np. Thks.

Screen is glossy, but not like a reflective mirror type. Semiglossy.

Surprisingly if minor touch it, it will fade away by itself and not so stick to the monitor. Seems like there are some resistant material to protect it.

  • Oh it expired :(

  • Got an email today saying they cannot honour the deal since they are out of stock. Gave me a refund. No new laptop for me. Not happy
