  • Looks like that price is available now as well.

Somehow I feel the price has gone up in past year or two. Don't have any impression of a $16/750g cashews from Woolworths.

    • I remember deals of $9.50 as well as $8.50, being the lowest, once in my woolworths, in the last year. The $8.50 could be a store-specific offer. I have noticed fresh produce like vegetables, having different prices in different stores at the same time.

    • Price has been reduced from $17 to $16 since the last catalogue special.

I often buy them from market but i distinctly remember the cashews i had when i was a kid had much more potent flavour compared to the ones you get from supermarkets nowadays.

    • My grandma had them growing in the vegie garden, definitely tasted better fresh from the garden, not many made it into the kitchen.

I remember reading that it needs to be processed, as it contains a poison like in poison ivy. Copied from here

The seed is surrounded by a double shell containing an allergenic phenolic resin, anacardic acid, a potent skin irritant chemically related to the better-known allergenic oil urushiol which is also a toxin found in the related poison ivy. Properly roasting cashews destroys the toxin, but it must be done outdoors as the smoke (not unlike that from burning poison ivy) contains urushiol droplets which can cause severe, sometimes life-threatening, reactions by irritating the lungs.

So, is it OK to eat straight from the tree? Would a person (not allergic) feel any mild effects from eating it straight from the tree? Very curious.
I was under the impression it is the reason why they are roasted or steamed - to get rid of the poison - before it is safe for consumption.

Wonder how/where Woolworths obtain enough Cashews to promote for this price? Must have a few silos in the outback somewhere.

I remember a while ago when they were on special they were labelled as product of Vietnam - this thread and this one seems to back up my memory.

So yeah, don't expect them to be Australian cashews, especially at this price. :P

Most of the cashew nuts I've seen and bought are imported from Vietnam.
You might come across a cereal or nut mix that states it is made in Australia from local and imported materials. Cashews will fall under the imported materials.
