great price for cashews I was in India last year and they were more expensive there where they produce so much. This works out to $12.67 a kilo The ones at Aldi are > $17 a kilo and at Coles >$21 I love cashews.

    • Their almonds are also expensive. They are much smaller, but more intense taste. I was in Northern part of India.

this is sad and frustrating. Thanks for letting us know.

I love a bargain but I wish producers would respect the health and rights of their workers.

Mix of Local & Imported Product

I was unaware that cashews were even grown in Australia, let alone harvest and process them remotely cost effectively…
I wonder if the actual "Local component" is the oil for roasting and salt for salting?

Thanks trev - I have purchased these the last 2 times they've been on special @ $9.50. Bargain!

    Health Benefits of Cashews:
A great mineral source, cashews contain 31% of the daily recommended value for copper, along with 23% for manganese, 20% for magnesium and 17% for phosphorus, add to that 12% for vitamin K.

What does this mean for the body? Studies show that magnesium helps diminish the frequency of migraines, improve cognitive ability, and also lowers blood pressure, which can prevent heart attacks. Copper contains antioxidants that render free radicals harmless. This protects against heart disease and cancer. Enzyme components like tyrosinase convert to the pigment melanin, which provides not just our skin and hair color, but protects our skin from UV damage. Magnesium works with copper to provide bone strength, and with melanin and elastin to provide joint flexibility, giving the nerves just the right tension.
Another ingredient in cashews is proanthocyanidins, which contain flavanols that inhibit the ability of cancer cells to divide and multiply, reducing incidences of colon cancer.
    Surprisingly, cashews contain zero cholesterol.

how much cashews are required to obtain these values?

      • +1

Here you can find the values for 1/4 cup of cashews- http://www.whfoods.com/genpage.php?tname=foodspice&dbid=98

        • Nice I wonder how almonds and peanuts measure up! That sounds crazy, 120grams would almost be sufficient to reach 100% of these values

      • eat a bit more guarantee you become an ION Man or Metalman - what cancer? who cares!

    • Also, cashews contain anacardic acid which has anti-oestrogenic properties.

MMM, just put the nuts straight into my mouth.

  • Why aren't almonds or macadamias ever discounted this much :(

edit: just noticed almonds at $9 for 500g, not bad https://www.woolworths.com.au/Shop/Search/Products?searchTer…

    • +1

That price is higher then anywhere lo, not good!

      • +2

Certainly better than the $26.90/kg I paid at coles earlier this week.

        • If you're going to Coles to buy almonds at 26$ you're doing it wrong. Legit any food fruit or health shop will do it at 9$/kg

@aerona: Which shop? Do you live in Nut Heaven or Brunswick?

      • +1

Ive bought nuts from other places that are old and stale. The supers do have a modicum of quality.

  • This happens every month or so (not that it's not a good deal anyway)!

  • +1

Any Paleo dieters here? Man, i love this whole nuts obsession. Except Walnuts, they suck.

  • +1

Hands down best nut is macadamia but so damn expensive!

Select cashews are just a piece of horse st. Spend a little more coin and get the Macro ones. They taste infinitely better and have more nutrients. Roast them yourself and have fun. I like to save money, but not at the cost of depriving nutrition to my body.

    • +5

between brands - taste may be quite different, nutrients in same species are unlikely to be significantly different…
unless you have proof to show us

      • I don't have a reference off hand. But I know the seed (cashew) is what gives 45% towards generating cashew oil. Some more to read https://hort.purdue.edu/newcrop/duke_energy/Anacardium_occid…
My understanding is that the cheaper a cashew the more oil has been extracted from it.One of the ways of extracting cashew oil from the seeds is for the seeds only to be washed through a chemical composition for the oil to be extracted. I believe its the amount and quality of oil in the seed that determines the taste of the seed (cashew). You can and should google if you want to be educated on how cashew oil is commercially produced.
