Wow… can I get a copy of the Internet once you've finished backing it up? :) Respect….

  • thanks.
    got 2 myself.

Now to buy a NAS to put them in

… or just use an old PC and DIY it! Just get an i5 (or higher) with Gigabit LAN and run Xpenology. I've built a dozen or so for myself, friends and family and they're absolutely bulletproof! Takes all of about 5 minutes to chuck the drives in and set them up too.

      • Agreed. After some issues finding the right files, I'm very happy with my Xpenology setup.

  • Watch out for these drives mive got one in my NAS atm and it makes a quiet, but still audibly annoying 'thud' noise EVERY 5 seconds.

    • The one in my PC does the same, but it's more of a click than a thud, and not really audible outside the case. My 6TB Red does it as well, but more subtly.

    • These drives do make a decent hum/vibration noise especially if you have 4 running in a Synology DS916 like I do. I never use to notice much noise when I had 2 3TB and 2 8TB in the same NAS. Must be the extra weight and platters in the 8TB drives causing issues. I think some extra padding around the internals of the NAS chassis and plastic drive caddies might do the trick?

  • PC Byte store seems to be the cheapest by a fair margin. They must be new to the regular 20% eBay sale, standard procedure is to jack up the cost by 20% then have the sale, just like futu_online and ShoppingExpress do

good find tho! i'm gonna grab a few myself :)

    • Not true. Nowadays products are taken down or stock reduced to avoid price issues. I always compare with prices overseas and if it fits my budget or I consider them as bargain to pull the trigger. Everyone including brick and mortar store do jack up the price before sale. That shouldn't put someone off from buying from ebay

It's out of stock now 😊 See how it will magically reappear one day after the end of this sale

  • Thanks. Wanted a 6tb but sold out, so grab a 4tb instead.

  • Bugger missed it - sold out

  • Let's see if they restock.

  • ok.. so i was an idiot and was looking for other awesome discounts and missed out on this, when i went to go check out, it said that the seller has sold out.. great..
so while kicking myself and doing some research, i found this update from backblaze..

    https://www.extremetech.com/extreme/175089-who-makes-the-mos…

there's a few charts there, with various capacity drives.. oh look! Seagate Ironwolf 8TB are still available with faster spindles too.. hrmmm…

  • I bought the same drives but half the capacity, for half the price, just over 3 years ago.

    • What I meant to add, is that Moore's law for HDD's no longer applies. There was a time you could twice the capacity for the same price within 2 years.

I guess Flash memory is now taking its place, giving twice the storage at half the price every 2 years.

  • Bad news for anyone hoping for more stock. Got a response from them "More stock should be arriving tomorrow. Unfortunately we will not be able to offer it for its current price."
