Dell Inspiron 15 Gaming w/ i5-6300HQ, GTX 960M with 4GB GDDR5 - $1273.99

I'm interested to hear your opinions as to what is a better deal, the i7-6700HQ for $1299 https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/296254 or this new i5-6300HQ for $1274? I think an upgrade to an SSD would be required for the i5, which would add ~$150.

The i7 model is better value. More CPU power plus double the RAM and an SSD for an extra $25

    • If you are buying this machine for gaming, having owned a few gaming laptops, my suggestions would be;
      - Most games don't need / benefit from SSD. Games with long loading times like Fallout 4 deinately work better on a SSD
      - Quad core is good for gaming, in this case i5 vs i7 won't really be noticeable for 90% of games where the GPU is the bottleneck
      - 8gb if ram is enough for every game I've played.

If you can afford to sped closer to $2k, the 1060 gpu is pretty impressive and the 1070 is very nice.

      • I agree with everything you said, but spending $25 to get those upgrades is a no-brainer.

In practice the performance benefits would be relatively small, but the SSD upgrade alone is easily worth the upgrade, if only for the faster boot time.

Resale price of the i7 would definitely be much higher too

Thanks for asking for my opinion, I will try to help.
    I like the i7-6700HQ/16GB/128GB+1TB/W10P/960M/FHD for:
The additional RAM of 16GB vs 8
Slightly faster CPU together with it being 8-core instead of 4
    2 Hard Drives: 120SSD + 1TB mechanical
    Everything else seems the same

    • You don't mind that the i7 is a refurbished laptop while the i5 is new?

i might be mistaken but im pretty sure it's 'as new'. it's not refurbished

        • As new relates to the condition of the unit. Having bought a few, it talks to the cosmetics. As Dell have a good returns policy, may of these units are <2 weeks old.

        • @noone025: which is more or less fine because it still has a one year warranty. it wouldn't be too unhygienic or have parts burnt out etc

  • Is 960M GPU worth it or worth going for newer generation GPU?

If you want a higher end gaming laptop, definitely get a Pascal 10xx GPU, if you want some light gaming and a powerful workhorse then the i7 linked by OP is a great option

      • thanks

  • You can get the new model with i7, gtx 1050ti(!), double RAM, 256SSD + 1TBHDD for $1699.

Is this a deal post or a which-one-is-better question that belongs in the forums?

Don't get a laptop for gaming! A $300 chromebook for travel and $1000 desktop for gaming will be much better!
