  • nice one, my last half price 6 month sim is expiring this week

    • Same. I bought one for my wife 6 months ago that is expiring now. Wonder if I could use this to recharge. Don't want to change the number.

      • +2

Why keep the number, you can't make or receive calls with it. Hmm, maybe you got a nice combination?

But if you want to, you have to hop through a different SIM first.

        • I still have 2 gig of data left on my Vodafone prepaid sim I bought almost 6 months ago. Is it possible to get this and do a sim replacement, and get the 16 gig added to the remaining data I have?

        • +1

@felixfktung: No idea. But if I were you I'd rather lose 2GB than lose 8GB. Maybe even less by the 7th.

      • I saw this on the final payment page that might help you: Keeping your existing number - Once your order arrives, we'll help you transfer your number across.

        • +1

Not sure that works for "porting" VF to VF.

  • great! have a modem 3G.
    I really need it.
    Crazy Iprimus 600 kbit/sec/
    Switching to Telstra soon hopefully.

  • +3

Been cheaper W/modem in the past at Harvey Norman

    • Those ones don't last for half a year. They usually expire after a month or so.

      • +2

        Those last 3 months.

      • +1

        Aw I see.

  • WOuld anybody know that if i take this overseas can i use roaming for it? I dont get how vodafone roaming works overseas >.<

    • From my understanding, Vodafone charges $5/day of roaming. Best to check details!

      • +2

I think that's only available for plans

    • They explicitly say "included data for use in Australia only".

They are the best rates for roaming with their $5 a day thing, but that is plan only (they do have month to month plan for a single month though).

  • +3

I loaded up on 5x Kogan $1 /12GB packs last week. $5 for 60GB sweet deal.
data is getting cheap. it's a race to the bottom, yay!

    • As it Kogan deal states only for new customers, how do you activate multiple sims? All in different names, or just same name but all separate supplied phone numbers? Please advice as I have ordered a second sim myself and would like more if this works.

  • +1

They had the modem special a week ago..i got 16gb for 3months and a screen display modem for $20

    • +8

Why didn't you post it here ;-(

      • Sounds like "They" meaning the Harvey Norman post from last week.

  • Any issues with using this data only sim in a mobile phone? (For data with dual SIM phone)

    • +1

You would have a problem if you are with Telstra since they don't have 2g signals anymore and the phone would switch the data sim on the dual SIM card to 3/4G while the voice sim would be on 2G. Most dual SIM phones in the market do this.

    • +2

Using one at the moment. And yes you would have a problem if you don't have a phone that can do 3/4G on both channels.

Heads up for activation: Make sure you choose "as a data SIM" otherwise you might get a $50 voice plan, though they can fix it up if you make that mistake. And before anybody asks, yes you can port a number to it, but you can't make/receive calls or receive SMSes. There appears to be 30 SMSes included but I haven't tried using them.

      • Thanks all..

      • You can't make/receive calls with Voda data sims, but you can send/receive sms as long as you have remaining sms credit ( 30 included ).

  • If I dont activate this for say 8 weeks will it still work, I'll just loose the extra free 8gb? it will still be 8gb with 180 days expiry?

  • +2

The way snail mail is around here, you may not get the sim until after the 7th of march and miss out on the bonus 8g.

  • +1

IF I order now will the pack reach me in time to activate by Tuesday?

    • Wonder about this too…

      • +1

Ordered yesterday and got an email that the shipment is due to arrive today. That is quick!

  • Sorry if this is a daft question - but does the sim come with $50 call credit too? for normal calls and sms??

    • +1

      It's a data-only SIM.

      • My parents have a Telstra "data only" sim. Contrary to what Telstra say, it can still receive calls and send/receive SMS's.

Assume this is the same deal? Can anyone confirm / deny the ability to receive calls? send/receive sms?

        • I've tried. Calls and SMS didn't work. Caller gets number is blocked, incoming SMSes go into a black hole, and outgoing (internal) SMSes fail. I can't even get data usage by SMS to an internal number. But that doesn't rule out some misstep by VF as I ported in a number I wanted to keep. I'm not fussed though, it will clean out all the people who used to have the old number before it was allocated to me.

        • @greenpossum:

Were you using the sim in a phone that was previously used by another carrier? Ie Telstra?

Sometimes the default mailbox number gets stuck with the previous provider, therefore SMS wont work until you change that setting.

        • @tunzafun001: I did a rescan for the network, even changed it to a wrong provider and then back to VF as suggested in a posting, so I can rule that out. I haven't tried texting to a normal number though, only internal ones, I'm supposed to have 30 texts to use, but I'm not fussed.

        • @greenpossum:

Not the network, the SMS centre number. It needs to be set as +61415011501 for Vodafone to send/ receive SMS's.

          http://vodafone.intelliresponse.com/index.jsp?requestType=No…

        • +1

@tunzafun001: There's no such setting on my phone. I would have noticed it. Isn't that old school stuff like the APN settings of yore which used to be sent in SMS messages but is now taken care of transparently?

I suppose it's possible VF screwed up sending me the auto settings so I may not have the final answer on this question.

        • +1

          @greenpossum:

Nah mate, it's still just as crucial today. Mine (Android 5.1) recently stuffed up going from Telstra to Voda.

I went into my messages, then settings tab at the top, then "SMS Service centre" number is near the bottom 3rd. So not in your system settings, it's the settings within your sms app itself.

        • @tunzafun001: Nothing there either, I'm running 6.0.1.

        • @greenpossum:

Hmmm, sorry I don't have any Marshmallow devices.. Does the ##4636## hidden menu show the SMSC number?

*Edit - For some reason Ozbargain is showing up the stars in the code above as hashes?? (even though they appear as stars from my side).

It should be - star hash star hash 4 6 3 6 hash star hash star

        • @greenpossum:

I'm running 6.0.1 on telstra and the message centre number is under …- >settings->text messages-> message centre. Incidentally the number is +61418706700 for telstra

        • @tunzafun001: Got the hidden menu. The SMSC number there is not what you posted so I changed it to that. No difference, cannot send, even to 1511 to get my balance.

I'm inclined to believe the block is at another level as all the other details appear to be correct and I do have my data allowance. But I'm not inclined to pursue VF for clarification because bank and CC SMSes go to my main number, I hardly send any and I wouldn't want family or friend to latch onto what is a temporary number. And the situation will be rectified I hope when I port that number away at the end of 6 months.

        • @reu: There is no Text Messages below Settings on my Moto G3.

        • @greenpossum:

Cheers for your efforts, much appreciated. Looks like Voda have locked it down a little more than Telstra.

    • The data only plan includes data and 30 SMS, no voice service.

Last time during activation process it had options: one was $50 data-only plan, the 2nd option was call/sms plan with less data valid for (maybe) 6 months.

  • Just ordered one and it tells me 2-3 days for delivery. Here's hoping they are right.

  • Ordered one. Thanks OP!!!

  • Can I use this in an iPad?

  • Ok I looked at the offer and see it is for 'your favourite device '

    • If you start hating your iPad then it will stop working for you. :)

  • Does anyone know what the SIM Starter pack expiry date will be?
I'm planning to order more than one.

    • +2

VF packs don't have an expiry date. However the plans available for activation might change over time because what you are getting is a SIM and $50 value. But generally allowances trend upwards. The bonus 8GB is the carrot to get you to activate soon.

      • Thanks for your response! VF Online Chat wasn't helpful.

  • +1

I bought this Vodafone in-store for $30. They will activate your sim and you will get 8gb bonus right away.
Pay $5 more however better than waiting for mail to come and miss out bonus 8gb.

  • +1

    I just bought this for $50 2 days ago….

Was happy with the additional 8GB but at $25 this is a steal..

  • By the time it's delivered, wouldnt it be too late for bonus?

    • +1

Depending on where you live. I ordered yesterday afternoon and got an email that it will be delivered today (Melbourne CBD)

  • Ordered yesterday and arrived today via express post, so service actually good!

  • +1

Has everyone's bonus data activated immediately or has it taken a while? (Mine still says 8gb)

    • It took a few hours IIRC but I got it eventually.

      • Cheers, will wait and see!

  • Sorry guys for the dumb question, got this new sim delivered today & activated to a "pocket wifi" device but its only showing I have 8GB data, what am i missing? How do i get the other 8GB…

    • It should appear after a while. I'm assuming you activated just before the deadline of 07/03.

    • I just called them with same question and they tell me it can take up too 72 hours before the bonus 8GB shows in your account. Said if it is not there after tomorrow I can ring them back and they will add it in for me.

  • it has passed 7th march now, if i buy this now would i receive 8 GB or 8+8 GB still?
