Solid deal, although I'd like to make users aware of the fact that this unit doesn't come with a native Ethernet slot.

    • I'd say this is more of a solid deal.

      • +1

Indeed! I wish the prices were that good for the UHD touch screen model…

        • +1

Wouldn't we all. But rip battery life.

    • +1

I'm not sure why this keeps getting pointed out, it's a consumer laptop and most people are wireless now.

If you really need to be tied down or desk bound their docking station makes that experience way better with one plug for monitor/key/mouse/ether etc.

      • +2

It's also lacking a DVD writer/reader, IOMega zip drive, floppy drive, parallel and serial ports - plus no native VGA connector. This laptop is the worst!

        • +1

          Fark…. Zip drives….

        • @mikaelkn: lol - yeah, I know. Don't know why that popped into my head :)

      • +1

Having personally owned two laptops that don't have built-in Ethernet slots (Surface Book/etc), I can tell you from experience that adaptors have a tendency of loosening and falling off either from nudges, or simple wear and tear.

This lack of consistency in function is an aspect which should be heavily considered, especially if the purchase of this Dell is for office use: With the majority of offices having large amounts of Wi-Fi channels, it's almost essential to be docked to Ethernet to avoid interference.

    • +1

Get a USB type C adapter that has ethernet port in it.

Why would you want a permanent port and sacrifice the size and weight of the laptop to include something you won't always be needing?

    Bad deal,

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/293407

Unless you need the screen the core parts a better on the above deal and $1000 cheaper

As far as storage 128GB SSD (system) and 1TB HDD (storage) would be my preference

    • Apples v Oranges. The one you linked is not an ultrabook.

        • A Mercedes and a Hyundai are both cars. Let's compare them

        • -2

@dosada: totally taken out of context. If they both had the same motor, parts, like this comparison…

        • @marchi: Kind of like a Toyota 86 and a Subaru BRZ?

        • +1

Nah, we are in 2017. Smartphones -> tablets -> ultrabooks -> laptops-> gaming laptops -> NUC -> Desktop -> Server. There is a size and spec distinction between them all so it is only fair to compare within a category.

    • +1

      No comparison.
XPS Vs Inspiron is way different.
Cooling is better on it because it's twice as thick.
Screen is worse. Very notably. Comparing a 4k QHD+ Touch with near 100% color accuracy vs a TN 1080p Panel with maybe 70% at best is very very different.

If you want a car analogy then it's Lexus (XPS) vs Toyota (Inspiron). Same manufacturer differnt product lines and one is clearly higher quality over the other.

The insprion is still a good budget system but the screen is worth the difference as its pretty key since it's what you'll be looking at. If you saw them side by side you would pick the XPS screen hands down.

      • I have to agree, I have the previous model Inspiron (7559) and the screen is pretty poor quality. Lots of light bleed around the bottom of the screen and the blacks and colour saturation are quite poor. Then again I don't think I could justify an extra ~$700 at the time to get the xps instead. Mainly because I use my laptop for study and playing Overwatch. If it was for any sort of media production I'd recommend the xps

This is a good deal for those who want the UHD/Touch Model and 97whr battery. I hear what others are saying above but if I had the choice I would choose this one over the 1080p/non-touch/57whr variant. +$400 off retail is still a deal.

  • In store or online or both?

  • I'd rather buy direct from Dell to get their onsite warranty.

    • I've heard Microsoft is also listing it on their webstore too (it's in the US so far, probably coming to AU soon).

    • What sort of warranty do you get here?

      • You still get the same Dell warranty.

  • Great Deal! got myself one yesterday at Chadstone :) I'm very happy with it. I have yet to test out the everyday battery life but from what i heard the 4k screen eats up alot of battery so im yet to test that out for myself. I plan on doing 4k editing so I thought it would be good to have a 4k screen to view the quality of my videos, but apart from that 4k or FHD I dont think it should matter to much to users who want to browse the net or play games.

Big Big con for me though is that camera placement because i do a lot of skype calls. gosh its so bad but makes up for the bezeless display. Now i just carry around a usb webcam.

    • nice, what sort of warranty do you get with it?

do you get the standard dell next business day on site?

      • comes with 2 years warranty. 1 with dell and 1 with jb hifi according to the staff member i spoke with.

Im not to sure about your second question but I believe so.

  • I think the base model 256gb/8gb/FHD is a better deal. Around $1800 after Cash Rewards + Powerbuy will possibly give back another $100. Battery, RAM and SSD easily upgradeable as needed. Also I prefer the matte screen - much better for writing documents.

    • that model has half the battery capacity, dell has been very cheeky with that

      • +2

Yeah, it is a bit of a bugger. But it still manages at least 5 hours from what I have read for general use/browsing web. The nice benefit is that it leaves space for an extra HDD in there. For that reason (at least with the 9550 model) lots of people with the larger batteries were happy to swap for the 56 + cage. So that might be an option, otherwise you can purchase the battery separately in the future. Anyway, I think the 56 will be fine. There are plenty of power sources and battery packs around these days.

        • +1

How is 512GB not enough for a laptop?

You also have SD card slot.

If you're going to say 56whr is fine because there are battery packs. I'd say the lack of HDD is fine because there are portable HDDs, SD cards, and USB sticks. A portable battery is about the same size as a HDD if not more, so you're not even needing to carry extra things.

    • $700 difference in price would cover most of the upgrades:
      97w hr battery (~$???),
      RAM ($95 for 8gb DDR4 2400Mhz, $145 for 16gb DDR4 if the base has 2x4gb - eBay),
      500gb SSD (~$375 for a Samsung 950 EVO 500gb - eBay)…
… and you get a 4k touch display.

      • +1

If you really need those upgrades. And prices will come down over time. I think 8gb/256gb is enough, I have portable storage and only need important documents and photos on my laptop. I have been using a desktop with 4gb DDR2 and it has been fine. For most people the base model will be more than adequate. The 4k screen looks nice, I agree, but for a 15" laptop it is a bit overkill and unecessary. I'd rather spend money on a nice 4k monitor. Also, the matte screen is better if you stare at a screen all day for work. Im sure people will find a way to justify the extra, I was set on getting the 4k model for a while, but when I thought about it the base model is too good a deal to pass up, i'd rather keep that money in my pocket and upgrade the RAM and buy external 4k monitor if I ever feel the need.

    • Can you definitely upgrade the battery to 97w if needed as Dell state 56Whr or 97Whr Battery (built-in)*
*Battery is built-in to the laptop and is not replaceable by the customer.

      • It is replaceable but will likely void your warranty:
        http://imgur.com/a/oVTXB - seven screws + some double-sided tape + removal of 57whr HDD chassis

      • +1

Yeah it is replaceable. I don't think it voids warranty (but don't quote me), because with 9550 Dell was selling the battery for users to replace themselves. And many people were swapping their small batteries for larger ones and installing themselves. Very easy to do.

Sorry guys but at this price point, doesn't the older Gen Alienware blow this out of the water with a GTX 1060?

    http://www.dell.com/au/p/alienware-17-laptop/pd?oc=smz5197a3…

    • +1

One is 2kg the other is 4.2kg…..
      Different product

  • For those specs, it doesn't sound like the battery life is going to be very good.

It's an impressive laptop otherwise though. And if they can get a GTX1050 into an ultrabook form factor, that is impressive indeed.

  • Shame about this deal missing out on a finger print reader as I'm very used to not needing to type in my PW every time I login.

    • This and no Windows Hello compatibility :(

      • HA! Didn't know about Windows Hello till you mention it!

For those interested and maybe could be added to post.

It comes with 2.5 year warrant
1 year dell through dell directly
    1.5 with JB HIFI

    • JB is offering parts warranty for 1.5 years after Dell's warranty expires? That could cost them, because they'd have to pay for replacement parts since the OEMs will not replace them.

    • Where is that documented on JB Site? I'll update the post with a reference.

EDIT: Found it! It;s 2 year minimum voluntary warranty…

      https://www.jbhifi.com.au/General/Corporate/Consumer-Matters…

      • I called, that's what I got told

  • Does anyone know when this deal ends?

    • I'd like to know too! Nothing on the website… :j

    • +1

  • If you really want to save on this laptop, you could buy JB HiFi vouchers from JDogman on the classifieds at 8% off, brining the price down to ~$2300

    • +1

if you have unidays coupon you can buy from Dell at $2550, claim 4% cash rewards and $100 powerbuy cashback (order by 28 Feb) as well. also you will get a free headset.

  • Not sure why this didn't receive more pos than it should have. It's actually a good deal. Too bad I missed it :(
