Looking for 1st Car

Hey Everyone,

As someone who knows very little about cars, thought I'd look to ozbargain to point me in the right direction of what I should be looking at/avoiding.

Budget of around 12K

*21 year old
*Looking at SUV's, small-mid sized
*Under 150,000kms
*Preferably newer than 08' (2008>)
*Located in Melbourne, VIC

At the moment liking the look of Subaru Foresters and Outbacks i know not SUV but still fits what I'm looking for

Not after an old car with issue but cheers

  • I know you said 2008+. 2006+ ACA33R RAV4s are pretty bulletproof, look at a Cruiser instead of a CV as you get all the extra safety standard. Example here. Oh, when you get some extra dollars, put in a Kenwood DDX917WS with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto (will fall straight into the Toyota 200mm double DIN space) to really modernise it up. Those old Toyota (Fujitsu Ten) Bluetooth hands-free only 6 stack head units like the one in the vehicle I've linked to were shit.

Can u go to $16k? U can get new Swift https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/290792

  • What do you mean a forester or outback is not really an SUV? They are the original SUV.

    • didnt use the greatest grammar in my sentence. Agree that forester is the original SUV but the outback is more wagon but they are great value im finding

  • have a look at xtrails. we had a 2011 and it was a great vehicle. good to drive, services and insurance was cheap. comfortable too.
ours had done nearly 150000km with zero problems (until a crash wrote it off :))

Agree. Have driven xtrails for most of my driving life with my Dad owning a 2015 and 2010 model, great cars

      • we just replaced our with a new Renault Koleos, tried the new Xtrail and it was OK, just not as good as our old one (last of the boxy shape with Led taillights) and Koleos just seems nicer, wife loves it but also still loves her old xtrail that went to car heaven.

maybe check out a Nissan Dualis as well.

  • Mitsubishi ASX, Nissan Xtrail, Mitsubishi Outlander, Ford Territory, Holden Craptiva.
Ford Escape, Suburu Forster, Suburu XV
    Suzuki S Cross.
Objectively buying a SUV on this budget limits your choices because they're desirable and the price reflects that.

Many of the smaller SUV are nearly identical in size to the same brand hatchback equivalent.
So unless you need AWD or higher ground clearance consider looking at a hatch as well.
One of the most common cars I see on the roads in melbourne is a Ford Focus because of the size and practical nature of them.
