Free NFC Tags from Telstra Shop

Just went in store and ask for a Tap and Take Card

https://www.telstra.com.au/tapandtake

"By simply tapping your NFC enabled smartphone against your NFC tags, you can automate several of your phones functions. Leave an NFC tag in the car and tap it to automatically open your NFC enabled smartphones GPS app. Or leave one by your bedside to automatically disable notifications each night. The possibilities are endless. NFC tags are programmable, meaning you can easily set them up to perform hundreds of command combinations with a free app in just a few minutes!"

Mod: OP requested removal, the tags are only writeable by limited devices and used only readable to retrieve information from within the Telstra store. See comments here and here. Moved to forums to retain comments and provide explanation for removal.

  • Is that available at any Telstra shop?

    • Should Be

    • Store needs to be set up to use these 'Tap And Take' discs to store product details in-store.

Intended as another way to make a sale.

  • Android or iOS compatible?

don't think Apple allows NFC to be used out of Apple Pay at this moment

This is possibly enough to prevent me from going back to an iphone. Cheers for the info

you're welcome. about Apple's closed platform, i do agree that is not great but it does help protect us from some other issues. I have used all flagship phones anyway but my main phone is iPhone as usual for stability and security.

        • @webtherapist: What issues is there with having access to your NFC reader/writer and using it for other things like this?

@Orpheus: I aint expert about this but I believe NFC is hackable for other purposes hence Apple put a lock on this door to limit and screen access :)

@webtherapist: may I just say apple wants all iPhone users to use apple pay :D

        • @webtherapist: did I say sth offensive here?

        • @webtherapist: Must be that people dont think nfc is vulnerable. Nothing is perfect but it seemms a likely target to me…

Do you have to be a customer? This would be awesome

these aren't meant to be "free" in the sense of help yourself

they are complimentary to use with Tap & Take retail experience

So store needs to be set up to use these.

Used to store details of products you are interested in (touch near product), for them to sell products to you it.

'Tap And Take' discs are scattered throughout the Discovery Store, allowing consumers to store products of interest on their unique Tap And Take card. This makes it incredibly simple to peruse these items at a later date using the card's unique URL, or to go back instore and have an assistant scan the card - picking up the conversation where it was left off.

Purely for reference, NFC tags retail for around 50c each. Cheaper if you buy in bulk.

      But not free

      • +6

if you have to drive or commute to their, it costs you really :). instead of driving down to their stores, you could have saved your time and effort and order some from eBay :)

        • Still have my pack of NFC tags I got from OzB years ago.

But the ones you pay for are unbranded and can be as small and thin as a 2cm sticker.

These aren't writable, just a heads up - you can't write URLs, or phone numbers, or anything to the tag itself.

I assume OP is promoting these together with an app that can do an action whenever tag XYZ123 is nearby.

Proper NFC tags would let you write data to the tag, so the same data can be read on any other NFC device.

Indeed; and if punters were really enthused about doing this on the cheap, even on iOS devices, they'd be printing out QR codes and using any number of freely available apps.

You have to use some Telstra app to work these? If these aren't writable then they're pretty useless, even for free.

      • These are NFC tags and are "writable", but not with smartphone inbuilt NFC. Probably with some more professional devices, like the Telstra Store machine.

Still useful if you have something smart enough to programme it
