Holden Cruze 2010 CDX Clutch Problem

A mate of mine recently bought a Holden Cruze 2010 CDX Manual and as he is still learning, we feel he mightve revved up the engine too much, while in neutral OR he has held the clutch in for too long when stopping and has the car placed in first gear.

Having said that, the engine sounds perfectly fine, however when the clutch is pushed in, it makes a whiny/cracking noise and the clutch basically feels "tough and grainy" when clutch is pushed in to change gears (making it difficult to change)

Has anyone had problems with this and what do you think the cost of repairs may be?

I'll be taking the vehicle to a dealer but want others experience/opinions.

  • Check clutch master/slave cylinder first. You maybe almost granny shifting.

    • Should be double clutching like he should.

  • If its out of warranty I would be keeping it away from a "stealership"
take it to a decent family mechanic

Might be a worn clutch due to a learner using it (why I always learnt in an older manual first where I could afford to thrash it during my first 2 years), possibly has caused some damage to the clutch plates, not a hard job but definately wouldn't be taking it to a dealer who most likely will rip you off anyway

Not a fan of Holden Cruze full stop, plauged with multitudes of issues and questionable build quality

I would say he may of been grinding the clutch during changing of gears or there is more to this story (ie burnouts and flogging the date out of the car)

    • Yeah he regrets getting a Cruze! What makes the situation worse, is now the car won't accelerate. And the car won't even go to a complete stop in first gear! Such a nightmare

      • That's an odd pair of faults.

If the clutch is faulty, typically it will slip. When you've already moving, and you press down on the accelerator pedal, the engine will rev higher but the car won't go faster.

When you say that you can't completely stop in first gear, what happens? Does the engine stall? That would suggest that the clutch is not disengaging fully, rather than slipping.

The two faults are kind of incompatible. Unless, perhaps, there are two things wrong. Maybe the clutch not disengaging properly has resulted in the clutch burning out and slipping.

        • The engine does not stall, it still runs. When I try revving up, the engine continues to run but wont accelerate above 20 kms. Such an odd fault!

        • Update: clutch is definitely slipping!

Would that be the same as the clutch not fully disengaging?

  • If you are having problems accelerating and engaging gear sounds like a worn clutch. Does it get worse as you drive a little while? Worn clutches tend to operate better when cold and as they warm up they play up more as the plates expand and loosen

    • You can't drive it at all, because the car won't move. It turns on normally, revs up normally, just won't accelerate and the clutch has this "rough" feel when pushed in to change gears.

      • Sounds like you need to get it towed to a mechanic. Still could be completely worn clutch. Generally they are around 1k to replace

  • In summary are my issues

    • [ ] Engine revvs but doesn't accelerate
    • [ ] Clutch pedal feels heavy and rough when pushed in
    • [ ] Does not stall, when placed in 1st 2nd gear on no acceleration
    • [ ] Loud grinding noise coming from engine when clutch pedal pushed in
    • [ ] Difficult to change gears and also feel rough to change them
    • [ ] Sometimes the clutch pedal does not disengage and stays pushed in
