$89 Sega Mega Drive with 2 Wireless Controllers @ Target

861

Hi Ozbargainers,

Was just at Target browsing and found they just re-stocked the classic Sega Mega Drive with 2 wireless controllers. Parramatta store has 38 left on stock.. the guy at Target said they has just received stock today.

I bought 2 myself, i think this is the cheapest it has been.

  • Normal price $99?

In stock, two wireless controllers and $10 cheaper? Sega doing what nintendont.

    • +15

Except it's nowhere near the quality. As below, it's rubbish and unnoficial, and I promptly offed mine.

      • WOOSH. OP is parodying a well known sega ad. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4YV5jV3olWI

        • +1

I know the ad, but I took his humour as him believing it's better :)

        • -4

          @scuderiarmani: that's because it is…

        • +2

          @slimdavy5:
Sega v Nintendo war finished a long time ago, time to move on.

        • -3

          @scuderiarmani:
Looks like they both lost….to Apple.

(Mobile Games > PC Games > PS Games > Xbox > Nintendo marketshare)

      • heard many people say the same. quality sux. rather emulate on pc through HDMI till something worthy comes along.

        • +1

everdrive allows you to load games onto a mega drive cartridge so no emulation which is the best. Granted its not cheap.

    • +2

Correct that is why they make games for nintendo now lol

      • +11

Sega should make a 3D Alex kid, kinda like Mario 64. I'd play it

  • Seems to be a good price. People are selling these for over $200 on eBay.

80 games is decent. Just hope they're the ones you want.

    • +2

Unlike with the Nintendo though, this actually plays your original cartridges, so your not stuck with the built in games. Iirc this is officially licensed by Sega too.

      • +2

Who says where stuck (cough)hakchi(cough) :)

        • Ty bro

      • Unlike the nintendo this is a piece of crap with terrible controller and sound quality and bad emulation.

    • +23

Selling for $200 but no one is buying them because it is a piece of shit.

Sound emulation is choppy and build quality is nowhere near a NES classic.
The controller is not very responsive with noticeable input lag.
      Also, where's the HDMI output?

Most importantly? It is not an official Sega product, but a licensed 3rd party product.

People with a library of games in cartridge form probably have the original Mega Drive/Genesis.
Why even bother with this when the sound and build quality are so bad?

People buy a NES classic because it resembles the original NES.
Now look at the Mega Drive classic… what does it look like to you?

  • +1

It says "maximum 1 unit per customer". How did ya get two?

    • +9

Came back as a different customer

    • I had my sister with me. Bring the family anf you can get more ;)

      • +24

How much to borrow your sister for a few hours?

        • -1

Ummm…free of charge…You won't be disappointed… she comes with extras!!! I'll give you a hint what the extra is… begins with "D" ;)

        • Those are the best kind of extras

        • +1

@tamzie28: I honestly don't know what you're referring to. Are you saying she has a "D***"?

  • +4

The best thing about this is that they're compatible with megadrive cartridges! I've still got some of them lying around.

    • +5

A lot of carts don't work. I tried before. The everdrive also doesn't work either. It's worth it for the bundled games though. Good selection

  • +20

This is the same emulation hardware that has been around since 2012, and is not an official Sega product - rather, it has been produced by ATGames using Sega licensing.

The reviews are scathing - probably better investing in an original Mega Drive / Genesis from eBay. The sound and infra-red controllers are especially poor.

    Take a look:

    http://www.polygon.com/2016/7/25/12270196/sega-genesis-mega-…

    http://www.kotaku.com.au/2016/07/no-sega-doesnt-have-its-own…

    • +3

They took out Ecco and Streets of Rage? Not to mention all the non-Sega games bundled in.

I take back my earlier comment about this unit being a good price…

      • Any Sega Mega Drive compilation without Streets of Rage 2 is just disappointing.

    • It's well worth looking into running an emulator on your PC/Mac. You can run these games for free, and at higher quality, and use pretty much any controller.

      • +1

        Yep, I agree.

I'm using Maximus Arcade via a USB stick on a thin client running a stripped down version of Windows. It works great. Plugged into my 40" TV.

Galaga never looked this big or this good!

    • -2

      The reviews are scathing

      Obviously: emulators are crap.

      • Emulators on crappy hardware with crappy quality control are crap. Retro Pi with some good quality controllers, it'll look and play better than the original.

        • Emulators allowed me to finish Boulder Dash and other games that wouldn't have been possible without save states, so you take that back right now!

        • @Diji1: I think majority would disagree with you, especially for anything from that generation. Got any examples?

    • probably better investing in an original Mega Drive / Genesis Raspberry Pi

      FTFY

  • +5

Console requires a TV with AV\Composite connection.

    Can I say "get a raspberry pi" ? :-)

    • Recalbox is amazing.

    • I'm deciding whether to re-use one of my PIs or run emulator on Intel ……
I miss MAME on a PC and all the old games.

I would have thought the market for these companies would be to recompile the games and sell them for Xbox One and PS4 as a retro bundle,

      $99 console vs disc for $60 ……

  • I just got the platinum in Sega Mega Drive Collection for PS3, and dug up the copy of it I had on PSP (which is nearly identical), and 100%'d a few of the Mega Drive "Vintage Collection" versions of Sonic 1-3 and Streets of Rage and shit on PS3.

… Point is, the Mega Drive is (profanity) dope even still.

    I just wish that

    1. These things would FINALLY acknowledge OutRun, sure, Ferrari may seem scary, but just do it Sega, say AT Games did it without your permission and throw them under the bus, I don't care anymore, I (profanity) need my OutRun man.
    2. These (profanity) came out with the portable one with a little screen and shit again because I love my portables, and I can't be arsed using AV ports anymore. I bought yet another backwards compatible PS3 just so I can unplug my PS2.
    • And Afterburner too. Outrun and Afterburner.

      • YEEEES.

…both of which had really cool PS3 HD versions available digitally only, that were taken down before I ever got a PS3 and could buy them.

Speaking of which, if anyone has OutRun Online Arcade on their PS3 download list and is willing to trade for something, hit me up.

        • Got the psp version of ourrun and man that takes me back to getting seriosuly pissed at the old school arcade version.

        • @Hotkolbas: Same. I got it on PS2 and PSP, the thing that annoys me the most is I have a backwards compatible PS3, and OutRun 2006 is one of the few games that don't work on it. It would look amazing running on the fatty PS3.

  • +6

    no hdmi is hard

  • +6

Can you imagine telling someone in 1987 that you'd be buying Megadrive consoles in 2017 and the games don't even work peoperly. They would be very sad.

    • +2

Super awesome! Megadrives came out 1989/90

      • They would also be super impressed at your ability to divine the future :p

    • They'd be saying the same thing we would be saying if someone was paying $100 for a VCR or CD player.

It's kinda ironic like with photography filters that were using fast computers to emulate super old slow ones lol.

Lucky we kept our Famicon (can't tell if it's genuine or good clone). Had friends and relos garage sale their NES/Megadrive/SNES in the past, before this whole vintage crap took hold.

  • +1

this is a piece of junk and dont waste you time, controllers are crap as is the console. This is coming from a sega fan

  • +16

Why is this on the front page?
    This thing is a POS.
No HDMI, not made by Sega, inaccurate emulation.
This is old and barely reduced in price.

Retailers are trying to pan this off as a NES Classic equivalent when it's not.

    • -2

It is pretty much the same as the NES classic though. That's just running an emulator like this, although at least this plays original cartridges too.

      • +1

It's really not the same as the NESC…

        • -4

How is it not? It's emulation, it's not the original parts. The emulation on some of the NES games is not 100% by all reports either. This is an officially licensed by Sega product too, not just some dodgy third party knockoff.

Btw I've got the original one of this with the wired controllers, bought it years ago, and the first thing I noticed was the sound being mono and not sounding right. I'm not saying it's fantastic. I'm just saying that it's the same as the NES in every way other than the emulation isn't quite as good, but that is more than made up for IMO by the fact that you can play all your original cartridges in it unlike the NES Classic.

        • +4

          @MrFunSocks:

It's a licensed product made by ATgames not Sega.

Sega had nothing to do with the production of this system other than the right given to ATgames to produce this piece of shit.
Well, isn't the main purpose of this machine to emulate classic Mega Drive games?
If the emulation isn't quite as good, then how is this the same as the NES?

          PROS
          Play cartridges

          CONS
          Mono sound
          Poor sound emulation
          Poor ROM emulation
          NO HDMI
Looks nothing like a Mega Drive
Bad controller with noticeable input lag

I don't see how this is the same as the NES.

If anyone wants to play their cartridges then a Retron 5 is probably better than this so called "licensed product".

LOL no matter how you spin it, the Mega Drive classic is a piece of junk.

        • @JajaMinx:

          Thank you!

      • +3

The nes mini has very good emulation and the controllers work brilliantly and probably are from the same mould as the original. It really does feel like playing a genuine nes.

        • -2

not in every game it doesn't
scrolling on the mini NES is pathetically bad even when compared to emulators on PC
one reason I got rid of mine was the fact it was jerky
overall a good emulation but still fell short / lagged / scrolling issues

  • Why get this when a Strawberry Shortcake is farr morre tastyyy mmmmmm

    • +1

You attempted to eat a Sega Mega Drive?

  • +1

Sega making a comeback, now make another Samba De Amigo, either Switch or make another Dreamcast

  • lol Wireless controllers!!!

    • Yeah… "wireless"

It uses goddamn infrared, so they're really choppy and if you move your controller just slightly away, it loses all input. I bought one of these and it was awful. Refunded if a scant half hour after first using it.

  • i just dug up 3 sega consoles, super nin, normal nintendo and an atari lol - dont got many games though. they wouldnt be worth much though ey?

    • -1

Nah, probably not. I'll buy them all from you for $20 delivered. ;)

    • I'll buy them 😁

      • I'd be interested in the super Nintendo and NES.

  • +1

I was torn. The emulation accuracy is pretty bad (particularly the sound), but at least it's legal/properly licensed AND plays real carts.

But crappy composite out sealed the deal. ROM "backup" issues aside, RetroArch / OpenEmu / RetroPie or even a real Mega Drive would be better quality.

    • That's because it is the same piece of hardware ATgames released a couple of years ago, but only in a different shell and without a screen.

They're just trying to cash in on the back of NES mini's hype with an outdated and inferior product.

IMHO, don't waste your money on this thing.
If your intention is to scalp then you're going to be very very disappointed and stuck with a couple of consoles that nobody wants.

  • No hdmi port…..will skip this and go playing sega md collection on my PS3.

  • Sega hasn't made hardware in AGES!

  • Would love an affordable c64 and Amiga console. I have no idea how to get an emulator on my pc or I'd be all over it.

  • +4

    DO NOT BUY THIS.

IT is rubbish, the sound is screwed and only does one channel and just sounds wrong. The controllers work like TV remotes and you have to be pointing right at the device.

    Horrible Horrible device.

  • Wdf why isn't it Ozbaragined yet? Nintendo did.

    • +3

      because its crap

  • +2

Composite AV. Mono audio. kills this deal for me. Although it does play games in Origional 4:3 aspect ratio. Including original cartridges for those who still have them.

For the money i'd rather just setup a retro pi or just use my PC with multiplatform emulators, LaunchBox front end and the controller of your choice for better emulation.

  • Collection to my other shiet i have collecting dust

  • My useless OUYA has a use, prevents me needing to buy this and the Nintendo Classic.

  • What year is this?

  • Not far off the price for what i paid for my retro pi.

Yeah some people can bag out an emulator but i sure that they havent seen or used recent emulators.

My pi is bloody geeat and all roms so far that i have run and all on hdmi.

The seag and nintendo arent batgains in my eyes because nintendo mainly has no way of expanding the game selection which not all the greats are on.

    • I have a retro pi setup and the nes mini is better at nes games. The controller feels exactly like the original nes and unless I drag my nes and and play side by side I dont notice the emulation.

This at games sega box is a huge pile of crap where the controls are crap the emulation done poorly and sounds terrible.

      • I have the setup with 2 ps3 controllers and 2 wired snes controllers type ones and my retro pi is a pi3.

I have had a go at some bad emulators from android play store but yeah i havent played the sega one so i have to go by others.

  • Theae are terrible. This is poor value and will look awful on a modern LCD. A very very old and underwhelming product which has been revamped and hocked off to unsuspecting consumers. Sorry, his isn't a deal at all, I paid $40 (NzD) for mine going on 5-6 years ago and sans the wireless controllers, it's identical.

This has the same guts as those tiny keychain things you used to see for $9.99

  • U think this is a better deal and looks like the original. Look at this on eBay http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/192039940800

    • I would be interested in how this one played compared to at games trash.

  • The review on youtube said they paid $59.95 like 7 months back. (AUS reviews)

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9BVhW91lxbQ

Another review on youtube which i couldnt be bothered looking for again shows a good description of how the sound quality is very diff sounding from the original console and how wired controls/games work.
