What Do You Look for in a Toothbrush?

I had been putting it off for far too long. Just one more week I would tell myself. There is still life in the old fella yet I'd say. We had formed a close bond over many months, but alas, the time had come… I had to buy a new toothbrush.

I always find this a somewhat daunting process. There are so many choices. What do you base the decision on?

Price?
Bristle style?
Head size?
Handle/grip?
Extra features like a tongue massager?
Brand?
Colour?

I always end up going for a regular blue toothbrush with medium bristles, other than that, price is my main consideration. Though I do wonder whether it is worth saving $1.20 on something you have to live with 3 times a day for several months.

So what does everyone else look for in a toothbrush? Are there any features you can't live without? Use the poll below!

And yes, electric toothbrushes are no doubt better, but that's a whole other discussion.

I feel like you have way too much time on your hands if you created that poll.

The only thing you need to know about toothbrushes is ALWAYS get soft bristles, the others damage the enamel on your teeth.

Do you need some time? I have extra.

    • My dentist says I need extra soft bristles and to only use my thumb and two fingers to brush, as I've nearly brushed my gums away on the left side.

  • Are you an 'A Current Affair' researcher by any chance?

    • No. I did work for the ABS during a census once, before their seamless transition to online processing.

      Does that count?

sense of humour and the ability to make me smile

For manual toothbrush, speed is very important for me and I base 80% of my decision on speed.

Don't know much about toothbrushes but I remember the first time I used an electric toothbrush and it felt like a much better clean.

Got the oral b 7000 recently and once again, feels like a big step up from your ~$30 toothbrushes picked up at woolies. Key features for me was easily you can brush over your gums with no pain at all and the toothbrush has a system which flashes red and vibrates every time you push too hard.

But does it justify the $150 pricetag…

EDIT: just read the last line

    • I have often considered an electric toothbrush. But when the time comes I can't get passed the $30 outlay when there are $2 options sitting right beside them.

  • Where's "None of the above"?

    • Apologies, an oversight.

Out of interest, what do you base your decision on, if none of the poll options are applicable?

  • a brush, that i use, to brush my teeth

  • I like to make sure it's brand new and not used

  • Electric toothbrush all the way bro.

    But where the "bikies" option?

    • That's the "brush off" option.

Is there a "don't give a shit option?"

    • Yes, abstaining.

      • What about the "candy" option?

  • Price, and longer bristles at the top of the brush, it really helps to get food between teeth out.

  • I couldn't care less about features, brand, etc, as long as the price is cheap and available in good value packs of 3, 5, 6, etc.

I was told by a dentist a long time ago that it doesn't matter what brand or style, just as long as you spend at least two minutes doing it twice a day, and try and use their preferred technique.

    1. Bristles.
    2. Handle.
  • Q: What Do You Look for in a Toothbrush?
    A: Bits of food.

  • But seriously use electric brush occasionally
Gives that just been to the dentist for a clean feeling
The heads are a bit expensive so research reviews

    • The electric brush itself can be had quite cheaply when on sale,
Where they get you is the replacement heads so do your research and see what fits you long term
You can get Coles or woollies branded which are cheaper
I'm sure you can get cheap stuff online but beware counterfeits
      They are worth the effort

  • A tongue massager is a great addition to any toothbrush.
