      • So would you miss out on the 6 months of Netflix if it doesn't arrive in time?

Yeah I'm wondering this too, I want to watch deep throat with the Mrs on Valentine's day

Not sure if I should Google that…

    • What a lucky lady :P

  • +2

These can be bought brand new or barely used on Ozbargain Classifieds and/or Gumtree for $50-$70. And with reports of shipping taking weeks, I don't think this is the best deal.

    • +5

      With 6 months netflix ?

      • +2

If it's brand new, or the person who had it before didn't redeem it, yes.

        • Cheers mate

  • Great little device, and easy to use. Got one for free recently due to recontracting.

    • can you let me know what plan you went on when recontracting??? what the monthly cost was (I'm assuming home broadband (ADSL)

      • Yup, it's the Home Internet Large Bundle (1000GB Cable). I'm pretty sure it's $120 a month, but after a monumental stuff-up on Telstra's end I managed to get it reduced. (So, $110 + Free Speedbooster, which itself is $20 a month. As well as Foxtel discounts.)

You should be able to grab the same bundle, but I'm not sure the Telstra TV offer is available without calling up. If you're already with them and have finished your current contract you'll have a better chance scoring a deal recontracting. (Probably best to do this over the phone.)

Edit: Try checking up the plan on the website and see if it mentions anything about current offers.

        • +1

which itself is $20 a month.

Only if you don't call them and get it for nothing.

Also they reduce prices if you hardball them. For example I pay $109.95 for 1000GB (uploads metered) at 100Mbit.

While you're busy thinking you're having a great deal by having the $20 speedboost marketing device which you can get for free they've left you paying $10 extra for something.

The real Telstra suckers are paying $149.95 for 200GB (uploads metered) at 33Mbit (or less if they're DSL customers). Telstra has multiple combinations of marketing devices they use to "give" and justify spending more money for dumb shit like speedboosts - which they give customers that play hardball for free.

        • +1

@Diji1: No, the free booster merely puts me back at parity with my previous plan that they moved me away from due to their stuff-up. So factoring that out, the $10 discount puts me at $110 a month, as you are. (115/2) (Edit: I read back my previous post and can see how you got to your first point, my mistake. Hopefully this one explains things better.)

Next, the Foxtel bonuses bring the price from what was $135+ back to $99 without losing anything. (Platinum HD + Multiroom)

On top of that, I've had all install costs waved every time I've had to move. (Never seem to get a property marked for self-install.

Edit: + Credits for both inconvenience and as a gesture of good will in response to their mess ups.

You make some good points, but luckily I know all about playing hardball with Telstra. (and all about how many ways they can mess things up!)

        • I just re-signed today but on the $99 deal with 1000gig plan with foxtel Ent Pack + Sports HD free for 3 months.

          Outstanding offer.

We were paying $130 a month before this for 500gig internet alone.

I did but the Telstra TV for $89 for the bedroom though.

  • +1

Can also add 1-month FREE Foxtel Play. But as I viewed the other comments, it might be expired before your unit arrives.

  • Is this for a lack of better word, 'locked' in any way? Any limitations at all or is it just a Telstra branded Android box?

    • Don't know if you ever heard of a 'Roku' Unit, but this is the exact same but with Telstra branding all over it.

      • +1

I've got both a Roku and Telstra TV. Personally for 90% of people I'd go with the TelstraTV.

The Roku is difficult to setup due to the geo-blocking.

Also, doesn't have a Stan app or the local TV catchup channels.

On the plus side for the Roku, the plex app is the "real" one so much much much better than the side-loaded one on the TelstraTV. There's also a heap of other channels (including adult ones) that might appeal.

I have both and like both, but if any friends ask for recommendations unless they're will to get their hands "dirty" I tell them to just go with the TelstraTV.

        • Have you tried Geo Unblock? I'm reading about heaps of channels and even watching US Cable TV using someone's username and password sold on Craigslist wondering if anyone has tried it

        • I Have the Roku for the Plex (so good) and the NBA.
Also allows me to watch You tube and 100's of useless channels.
There are some gems in there though.

    • I believe you can't load non Australian apps like Hulu or HBO Go, but for Australian apps it's fine

      • You can side load them if they have the roku files available.

        • I read you could only side load one at a time though, problem if you wanted say Plex + any other streaming service

        • +1

@jasong: I'm not too sure as I only have Emby installed because I got sick of the roku media player.

    • Yes the unit is locked. You have to activate it via a Telstra portal. Not sure if it's transferable after that.

Better off just buying a newer Roku unit and be (mostly) hassle free.

They are a great unit but I've had some hassles with some of the channels (apps), particularly the NBA League Pass app. As soon as it's loaded I get the blackout message and the whole app quits. It's never been updated and so I fell back to the Apple TV which still hasn't let me down.

      • Yeah seems like this one is best value at the moment:

        https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/332079924046

Unless you have a 4K TV.

I'm thinking to try it out with VPN if anyone else has one I wonder if it does screen mirroring?

  • +4

Offer only available online and for a limited time only to Telstra Home Broadband customers.

According to reslo1, the deal seems to work with anyone besides Telstra Home Broadband customers, as long as you have a Telstra ID to activate the box. If you don't have a Telstra ID, the cheapest way is to buy a $2 Telstra Pre-paid SIM in order to create one.

    1. FYI - You don't need to be a Telstra customer and you certainly don't need to be on their broadband network. I'm with Internode and it works just fine for me.

I signed up using my Telstra ID that I have for my mobile without any issue. I've also heard from people that its possible to get a Telstra ID without a service and that is all you need to activate the box.

NOTE - Streaming Bigpond Movies and Presto will not be quota free unless you're on Bigpond.

    • +1

you can sign up for telstra tv without any telstra service at all. just go to http://crowdsupport.telstra.com.au and sign up there.

      • Do you still need the telstra box to do it that way? I mean is there an app I can put on Kodi to do the same thing?

      • +1

Tried with 24/7 chat and they would not set up an ID without an active account

        • +1

24/7 will not do it for you. Go to the link I posted before and sign up there. I just tested it again and it definitely works.

        • +1

          @realfancyman: thanks!

      • +1

I signed up here and bought one. Cheers

  • +1

    Do JB's still sell these?

  • +2

Good deal for those who don't want to do the Gumtree / ebay dance.

Gonna set one up for the folks and split the cost of Foxtel Play for GOT and HD sports (be nice if Anytime goes HD before the F1 season starts).

Don't have to be a Telstra broadband customer to buy or use these AFAIK.

    • Good deal for those who don't want to do the Gumtree / ebay dance.

Is it 1 Netflix 6-month pass per device, or per Telstra ID…?

So if you'd bought a unit second-hand, can you then still claim the 6 months free with your own Telstra ID?

      • Doubt it.

      • +4

Once you factory reset the unit, it can be reactivated with a new Telstra ID and they'll email the offers to the new ID

        • Cheers :)

        • this is true, reset, use different telstra id and redeem offer to same netflix account

      • So if you'd bought a unit second-hand, can you then still claim >the 6 months free with your own Telstra ID?

        Good question.

Can't imagine you can reactivate a previously activated unit with a new ID and still get the 6 months of Netflix (otherwise you could just keep deactivating and reactivating the same unit over and over again with different IDs and get 6 months of Netflix each time, although apparently there is a limit of 3 lots of Netflix codes per Netflix account?), but I could be wrong.

Best bet is to buy brand new sealed ones from Gumtree or ebay, and use a different Telstra ID to activate each one.

        • "Can't imagine you can reactivate a previously activated unit with a new ID and still get the 6 months of Netflix"

This is exactly what you can do. (probably outsourced the implementation to the same mob who ran census 2016 and the clink robo debt)

      • Or.. if you are really, really bored go on either Gumtree or eBay and search Telstra TV and some people have pictures of the serial number. As stated before, if they factory-reset the unit they can get another trial too ;)

        Example

        P.S - I'm not responsible for anything.

        ;)

        • I don't know how the serial number works tho…? I thought you only get it when you sign into the device?

        • +1

@Spackbace:Ah, they must of changed it. Back when they first released it, you didn't need an activation code on your screen, only your devices serial number. What I was trying to get at, if you only needed a serial number, you could of just used any valid serial number and get offers.

          See here

          My mistake.

      • -1

@Spackbace As long as the original owner hasn't activated the offer themselves, you shouldn't have any issues.

        • +1

Conflicting with others saying a factory reset allows you to claim it :/

        • -1

@Spackbace: from my personal experience, even if the offer shows up, if it's already been redeemed you'll get an error on the Netflix side saying offer not found.

        • +2

@Spackbace: I redeemed the offer with my Telstra ID to my Netflix then factory reset the unit and my mate redeemed again using his Telstra ID to his Netflix account. I see there is conflicting info but that was my experience

        • @kdtrey35:
How quickly did you receive the code?

Could I rent a Telstra TV from a gumtree user and then get the Netflix code(?) within 10 minutes?

Anyone on the Brisbane southside want to do do that?

  • Does the Telstra TV work on internet connections that aren't Telstra?

    • +1

Yes, they sure do. But Telstra has it unmetered so any data you use, it won't count to your monthly quota/data.

  • Would the 6 months Netflix only apply to new customers or can you apply this to an existing Netflix account?

Could be worth it for the Netflix alone

  • +2

I'm with Telstra NBN, have Netflix which I pay like $11 a month for and use my PS4 for most apps. What does the Telstra TV bring to the party and is it worth my while?

    • +3

You can get HD Foxtel Play for all channels (except Fox Footy). No other device offers HD at the moment. Any usage won't go against your Telstra NBN download allowance. Picture quality is excellent and was very reliable during my one month trial.

I think it also has Bigpond Movies if you are into renting movies.

Other than that, probably nothing that your PS4 doesn't cover.

      • +8

        Foxtel haha

I'll stick to watching free livestream on facebook LOL

  • +1

Can you put kodi on this?

    • Don't think so. Can't turn it off either. Unless you pull the power.

    • Nope, doesn't work.

    • Screen mirroring would work

    • Telstra have a nasty habit of gimping hardware they sell to people by installing their own firmware so it lacks functionality.

    • You can't use Kodi, but I got a version of Plex on mine (RARFlix), and it works really well from my NAS. We ended up with 2 boxes for some reason, and the free Netflix works for both (as long as you sign up for anything but the basic"one screen"option)

But if you're looking for the more dodgy Kodi stuff you're out of luck, I'm afraid. :(
I've got 2 Kodi boxes but don't use them as the combo of TTV and Netflix works so well!

  • -1

    Optus Sport on this ?

  • +2

I got one of these on a local buy swap sell for $40 :-)
Don't need $2 sim to create a telstra account. Just registered on website. The sim tried to make me sign up for a data/phone subs.
You can just login to telstra tv app once registered and then activate unit that way. Ensure with wifi on your phone turned off if not a telstra broadband customer.

Netflix worked for me and I had existing account.

It's a great unit for price and you can cast to it as well. Local Aus TV apps are all pre-installed, so I would rate it highly for ease of use.

Only downside was that it ran out of power with h265 1080 shows.

It's Plex classic so isn't too polished but works a treat.

    • "Only downside was that it ran out of power with h265 1080 shows."

That's a huge downside IMO. I need something that will hardware decode h265 2160p content. 1080p is very 2001.

      • Yep, made decision of going from NUC to Shield much easier after trying this out.
But the Telstra tv is a great solution for 2nd room or kids tv.

  • +2

    Noooo
    In order summary it says…
Please note we're currently experiencing a delay of up to 15 business days for delivery of Telstra TVs. We apologise for any inconvenience

So no Netflix the deal will finish by then

    • You could always buy one on Gumtree now and activate it to get the Netflix deal, then sell yours when it arrives.

      • Will check thx

  • Would this be a cheaper alternative to replacing our busted TV antenna? :)

  • @sween64 How did you find this?

    • There's an anonymous deal thread that's in beta on OzBargain.

  • +2

I have chromecast, recently bought roku stick (both great little device). But then, i went and bought mi box android tv with built in chromecast capability. I can install kodi, plex and most importantly vpn application to watch geographically restricted content from US etc.

I now have unused chromecast and roku stick sitting in the drawer.

    • Which VPN do you use?

      • +1

i use windscribe when they have special here on ozbargain. for the client i use StrongSwan.
works beautifully, i just switch it on to watch US content or elsewhere, and off to watch iview, sbsondemand, etc.

        • thanks :)

  • Can these stream from a local DLNA media share? MKV's and the like? I use Serviio on my PC.
