    "Unsure about the quality"
and there in lies the lack of deal

  • So cheap but yes would be keen to hear some reviews!

  • I always struggle to read the specs - how do you know whether this tv is netflix capable or at least a smart tv?

    • +3

I think this is a dumb tv

  • +3

I would buy a Hisense TV anytime over this unknown brand.

    • +3

It's actually quite possible that this is a Hisense. Many rebranded (generic brands) TVs are actually Hisenses.

      • +2

        or tcl & other brands

        • +3

Yep, or Changhong etc… basically can be any Chinese brand.

        • i got a 65" tcl from costco a while back — great tv. the GUI sucks but picture is great.

    • -7

Hisense is also a low end brand with low grade panels.

      • +6

I'd challenge that. They have multiple series in their product range using various different panels. Hisense are a emerging brand in Aus, but in some other markets they are a big player in the low-mid range offerings. Quality wise i have zero confidence in any of the brands anymore. Gone are the days of spending more for a premium quality set designed and manufactured out of Japan to high standards. Now everything comes out of China, Mexico, Thailand etc. and even if you're lucky to get something manufactured elsewhere the quality control just is not what it used to be.

        • +1

Sure quality control isn't what it used to be but picture quality is. Sites such as Rtings.com are fantastic for this, I would have bought one of the Hisense but settled on Sony X8000d

        • I'm not sure what you mean by that. All the manufacturers have average to crap quality product ranges among their mix. rtings has very limited information for Hisense so can't use it much for them. I have bought both a K and M series Hisense and the picture quality is seriously impressive, even more so for the $. The countless people who have bought same testify to all over the internet (it was the catalyst for me to finally stop using the HD Plasma). Quality control, however, is not good in my experience. And Samsung, Sony, LG are all riddled with countless stories of the same. It's an industry wide failing with no end in sight.

        • @Xizor:
          * are all riddled with countless stories of the same*
          aka Note 7

      • They got high end stuff just don't sell them here, such as this one (AUD $15,200):

        https://detail.tmall.com/item.htm?spm=a220m.1000858.1000725.…

Well, no one buy it of course LOL

      • id say hisense are now a medium end brand, but people focus on their cheaper range which is why its known for cheaper products. they offer more warranty than their competitors.

my series 7 hisense TV is top notch too.

  • User reporting problem with HD audio on 50"
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/289958

Different model. Not sure if that problem also effects this one as well.

    • Definitely require a soundbar, even my Hisense TV speakers are tinny

  • I have been trying to decide if I can trust getting a tv deliveried to WA, their feedback is good but they talk about lots of delivery problems.

    Any thoughts?

  • +3

I remembered buying a Kogan TV with so called "Samsung" panel. The TV was horrible. It obviously had a Samsung reject panel. Below average viewing angle, heavy contrast shift when watching the TV from an angle. After that purchase, I pretty much blacklisted Kogan branded products.

    • How recent was this though? Things have gotten much better over time.
Barring the sound on these sort of TVs which is consistently trash

    • +1

Happens with Samsung TVs too. All VA panels have poor viewing angle and shift colour/brightness when viewed more than 20-30 degrees off-centre. If you want a LCD TV with wide viewing angles, buy one with an IPS panel.

      • I am aware of that (VA panels have contrast shift), but even the colours (even when right in front) are subpar (even the blacks - which was meant to be a strong part of VA - I honestly don't know why a VA monitor would struggle to display black colours properly) plus the inability to support 1080p30fps properly (basically, any device that does 1080p auto and picked 1080p30fps - because the TV indicates it can support that mode) will have motion judder. Basically, instead of supporting 1080p30fps properly, it simply just hack it (by skipping frames) - think of it as in the TV is doing 1080p25fps but lied to the device it is doing 1080p30fps. The viewing angle is also worse than a typical standard VA panel. I also recall finding a el cheapo brand TV which looks virtually the same except with different brand name).

Kogan TV - forever on my blacklist.

  • Not really a bargain at all the brightness off the tv is pretty shocking and the power consumption is too high.

    • What's a good power consumption for a 55" or 65" 4k these days guv'nor

    • My 10 year old dicksmith 32inch uses 130w and 20w in standby

      How far tech has come.

  • +3

Samsung has been doing a panel lottery for years now. Even many of their own TV's don't have Samsung panels.

    http://www.rtings.com/tv/learn/panel-lottery-samsung

    • Just read the review. Amazing stuff.

Will bookmark that site for future reference.

    • It applies to Sony as well as they dont manufacture panels anymore. Only LG is sourcing own panels for own TV.

      • I was under the impression that is just OLED's now.

  • Unless someone can positively verify that the sound on these 55" TVs is ok, I will not recommend this as a deal.

Sound issue with 50" signify TVs here. thanks ScubaColes

Who even watches non-HD anymore esp when it is free and you can receive it through an antenna?!

  • +3

    Signify's regret and disappointment.

    • +1

Your display pic sure doesn't ;)

      • +5

I feel harassed and degraded by your sexist comment. I'll never use your emoji again and I call on others to boycott it, too.

        • +2

          Hear hear ;)

  • Does anyone know what their dead-dot pixel policy is for warranty?

    • +7

For that price, they guaranty at least 1 dead pixel per TV…

  • Does anyone know how this compares to the LG OLED55E6? Not sure which to get.

    Thanks!

    • +3

Only a fool would choose the LG OLED55E6 over this rare beauty.

      • +2

Cheers. I was worried I'd regret the LG. I'm all about quality, it boggles my mind how some people can buy a nice 4k TV and use a $30 HDMI cable, when a diamond series HDMI cable would provide 3x better picture quality.

        • +1

Tried too hard… failed at trolling.

  • This reminds me of the unbranded 1080p TV I got from COTD. Turns out the quality is much worse than 1080i, and the Panel is from Samsung as some suggested. I wouldn't buy or trust these unknown brand. They can say UHD, 4K, whatever to trick you.

  • Can anyone with this TV or Brand of TV confirm on the quality of the product?

  • theres a sony seconds 55" smart tv for around $600 on fleabay. check sony store

  • +2

I picked up one of these from the last 20% round, and I have to say, I'm pretty happy so far. The picture out of the box is fairly garish, and if I'm being picky the backlighting is a little uneven, and as everyone has mentioned, the sound is pretty terrible. But after spending a bit of time tuning the picture, and combined with Audioengine speakers plugged directly into a (separate) Mi Box that gives it 4K Android TV, it's working really well as the kitchen tv :) I mean, for real movies and when I game, we would still watch the old Samsung plasma for the PQ, but as a secondary tv, it's been great.

As always, YMMV, and I've been lucky so far to get one with no dead pixels + I do get audio with DTV broadcasts, HD or otherwise. It's also weirdly really light; make of that what you will, but I found it very easy to carry around as a single person, even more so/lighter than the 39" Hisense that I was moving from the spot :S

    • +1

Thanks for the info! Sounds pretty good. Would it be possible for you to please test if it does 4:4:4 Chroma Subsampling, RGB, 60Hz when plugged into a computer or laptop via HDMI? Also, does it have an HDMI Enhanced mode in the settings? If so, may be sold on one of these.

  • -1

cheap, yeah, but what happens if it breaks down? how are you going to return it? postage costs? waiting, unknown, not good i reckon.

extra $300 will get a name brand from a store (local store), hassle free.

    • +1

so, the extra $300 justifies your hassle free solution? LOL amazing

      • If you have the money to spend to save time - I say do it.

You can always make more money but you can never make more time.

Yes there is a time is money argument but time is always running out where money may not.

  • +1

Is there a remedy for dead/bright pixels? I got a couple on my panel.
