Contractor Retires after Work Done Is Faulty

Hi everyone

I'm in need of some advice after being left $5000 short. Last year, I had a small business repaint my pool, this included sanding the surface and applying epoxy then repainting. The warranty for the work mentioned was 2 years but after a year, I've noticed that the paint has begun to flake and large chunks are falling off. I called up the business mobile and was told by the owner that he had closed down the business due to illness. I know that when the job was in progress, it was the guys son who had done most of the sanding and painting.

What are my options limited to? I still have a year's warranty left but no business to claim it on. Can I go to fair trading?

Any advice is appreciated.

Thankyou!

Edit: He was licensed, registered and insured. State is NSW. I spoke to fairwork today and was told that they couldn't do anything but file a complaint and wait for tribunal

Licensed, registered, insured business? Look into the insurance arrangements.

Cash in hand, non-contracted work? You're in a hole.

  • A while ago I was reading up on refinishing pools, and something I read really stuck out at me, it was 'Once you start painting a pool you never stop painting a pool'.

Is the paint epoxy 2 pac at least?

  • Which state are you in?

      Distressed most likely.

  • The only thing left for you is to sue the contractor.
