Just scooted a couple of days back for the first time. While its cheap I couldn't be bothered with them ever again.

If you dont pay for seats u will be allocated thw worst possible seats.

Best ever design on placing the buttons for lights and call fot service..

Theyre amazingly cocky about swithcing seats apparently seats are tagged for extra head pads, etc which is so darn hard to know…. So u cant switch from a lower grade to those

All this in a 4hr flight let alone all the way to greece

In all if u really wAnna get from a to b and sleep through in a squishy seat then ok. Otherwise I would give this a miss…

as cheap as these flights are sometimes its worth paying the etra $500-$700 for a better airline, once you add massive stop over times, baggage, food, drinks etc really not worth it for long haul flights, economy is bad enough, cant see budget long haul being worth the savings, only good for 8-10hour direct flights & 2-3 hour internals

    • I flew to Athens last year with Emirates economy. Whilst I really like emirates (free alcohol), such a long flight definitely pushes the limits - I couldn't imagine such a long flight on a budget carrier.

Generally I find if you book well in advance you can get some pretty well priced airfares with some of the better airlines - which would likely end up being similar to what you'll end up paying with scoot once you factor in luggage, food, and every other little extra they charge through the roof for.

  • +9

Yeah should be noted those prices are without food, without baggage and without the fee to connect the flights. I.e you have to pay $20 a leg extra to be guaranteed a new flight if your first flight is delayed??

    • So what happens if your flight is delayed and you haven't paid the $20?

      • +1

My guess if both flights are with scoot you'll be okay based on the wording

"So your incoming flight arrived late into Singapore, causing you to miss your connecting flight. What do you do?

If you’re pre-purchased Scoot-Thru online or at check-in, fret not! Head over to the Scoot-Thru transfer desk at Transfer E in the Terminal 2 transit area. Our counter staff will help to re-book you onto the next available flight on the same carrier at no additional charge.

If you had not pre-purchased Scoot-Thru, you’ll need to make your own alternative flight arrangements to get to your final destination at your own expense."

        • +3

So you lose your money for the next leg according to the last paragraph.

  • Awesome deal, if you like to drink and party, head over to Kavos for a fun few days with the Brits.

  • +20

I've said this before but I thought I'd list this warning before people get too excited.

If you're not a POLi paying backpacker (like myself) then this deal is deceptively cheap.

Add $188 for 20 kg luggage (yes $188).
Add $40 for Scoot thru (drip pricing anyone?)
Add $40 for credit card fees (thank you Singaporean company that uses a foreign card processor so pays no respect to Australian regulations)
Then try go over 24 hours without buying food or drink.
And then only fly on the few days Scoot actually flies from Athens to Sydney.

If you have to travel in summer and on a budget then you may have no other budget choice.

If you just want a holiday you even fly to Italy in August for $906 all in (vs nearly $1000 with this deal for the same options) with another loong China Southern flight via Bestjet (e.g. https://www.skyscanner.com.au/transport/flights/syd/rome/170816/170831/airfares-from-sydney-kingsford-smith-to-rome-in-august-2017.html?adults=1&children=0&adultsv2=1&childrenv2=&infants=0&cabinclass=economy&rtn=1&preferdirects=false&outboundaltsenabled=false&inboundaltsenabled=false&qp_prevProvider=ins_month&qp_prevCurrency=AUD&qp_prevPrice=905&priceSourceId=unspecified-unspecified#details/16692-1708161045--32439-2-11493-1708170625|11493-1708311400—32439-2-16692-1709020655)

Fantastic post thanks. I'd been watching these flights for a while without realising all the hidden extra costs.

Any thoughts on China southern? They're consistently the cheapest but I wonder if there's a good reason why…

      • -1

        Do not fly China Southern.

My friend took a flight Perth to London via Guangzhou.

Wasn't allowed any electrical devices on even on flight mode. Business passengers weren't even allowed to use laptops. No Service.

Scoot is great with their new planes.

        • -1

          @muncan:

Well my friend flew them last month and no one on the entire flight was allowed to use any electronic devices from London.

I wouldn't trust their website, their in flight guides said you can use laptops during the flight, but the attendants just ignore it.

          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/248967

          I would just avoid it.

        • @Pigey: Maybe they had a legitimate reason for the temporary ban? Perhaps they had a passenger with electromagnetic hypersensitivity?

        • Can't explain why your friend ran into this issue, but my family and I consistently fly China southern when we go visit family.

Yes - more annoying vs. Qantas as they have no electricals on takeoff or landing, but they have no problems with using after takeoff, in my experience.

As for service, if I had to compare to say Air China - same, really.
Qantas has had nicer staff in my experience but I also have had Aussie flight stewardesses with real attitude.

Overall would recommend for budget fliers.

        • -2

Well, what's the point of you guys starting this smear campaign against China Southern? Or you just came out of a mental house that has failed you? Let me give you the truth based on my countless experience with them, although I doubt any one cares about the truth.

During the whole flight, mobile phone is not allowed to be on. This is true. The reason has been explained by some authoritative a while ago. China has too big a population, a big part of them live in remote poor areas, who are taking their first flying experiences, have no understanding of the so-called "flight mode" on their phones. Hence, just to be on the safe side, it's all banned.

Ipad is not allowed during landing and takeoff, otherwise it's fine, laptop's the same.

Actually, all Chinese airlines have the same rules.

Business class? They might treat you as second class citizen, only if you are disruptive.

        • -1

@Pigey: but the attendants just ignore it? Not every one is as dumb as you are, mate, or you are living in Nazi Germany?

        • -1

U are obviously a Chinese patriot Mao would be proud of you.

  • Be better with Scoot if they could just have few hours in transit on their flights and at reasonable flight departures.

    • nah cathay, etihad and qatar have had around $1000 recently. go with one of them

      • -1

Do you have a link to these deals? Spending $1000 return is reasonable
Also has anyone seen some good cheap one way flights to Athens?

        • +1

Cheap Cathay prices are to Amsterdam. Just paid $1047 two days ago on Cathay, Melbourne to Amsterdam, July/August. Also there were cheap Vietnam Airlines flights to Paris but not sure if that's still on.

        • they were in the last month or two all on ozbargains. you could search previous posts. not sure if they are still current, but there may be more sales. by the time you add bags etc. on scoot and food you are paying the same prices.

        • One way lfights? Try AirAsia or Malaysian Airlines. They specialise in those.

  • Check Qatar first.

  • +2

    Scoot - never again

  • Via Singapore? How long is the flight in total?

    • +4

How long is the flight in total?

      It's around 15,000 km.

  • +2

Cheap but once you take in the extras it probably doesn't workout all the much cheaper considering the 21 hour lay over ( Melbourne return).

    • That's the answer I was looking for. Thanks.

  • +1

Each to their own. I wouldnt scoot to Athens if they paid me the $716 from Melbourne. You want some comfort on such a long journey. Scoot wont give you that for $716. All they will give you is a bad back, and hunger. Horrible transit time on the way back also.

    • +1

You get what you pay for. You buy Chinese or Singaporean junk, you regret it. It's like that with their flights. Tiger Air is a shining example of junk airlines

  • next time im traveling to Europe we gona stay in bangccok (transit) a couple of days, get hotel refresh up and sleep, the trip to Europe it just to much, my ass wasn't working by end of of flight it because it had been siting for so long and back was stuffed
