Cheapest Android Phone with Good Camera

My dad keeps complaining about his current phone because of the poor quality camera (in reality the glass on the camera has scratched).

He literally only uses the phone for calling, SMS and to take occasional pictures. He has no concept of apps or mobile data/wifi. So the phone doesnt really need to be high end (processor or RAM are irrelevant).

So whats the best budget phone with a camera that I can get for him?

Requirements (in rough order of importance):
* Android
* Cheap
* Good camera
* Battery life (nice to have)
* microSD card slot (nice to have)

Comments

  • you can try Xiaomi phones, they're bang for buck with decent cameras.

  • Xiaomi Mi5s has same camera hardware as much hyped google Pix$el available at 1/3rd price.

    • +1

      Yet the pictures look shit compared to Pixel. It's not only about the hardware.

  • What is your budget?

    Suggestions:
    More expensive
    LG G5 is probably the best bang for buck, if you want a high end camera (and get a wide angle camera thrown in as well)
    TCL 950 looking intersting also, maybe a bit cheaper when it comes out.

    Less Expensive
    Samsung S5, Moto G4, Xiaomi Mi5s. Mi5, Sony M5

    Check out the DxO rankings for an idea of how the cameras are ranked.

      Free bootloops as part of the deal with G5

      • +1

        I think G4 were the bootloop kings.

          G5 is carrying on the tradition proudly though

  • The Lenovo ZUK2 also takes pretty decent photos for a sub $300 device. Last best price was $227 AUD

    and a sample shot

    The only other phone I can recommend is the Xiaomi Mi5, which doesn't have SD card slot capability but it's cheap price tag and flagship specifications makes it a much better choice over any other sub $300 devices sold in Australia.

    If you want even cheaper, try the Redmi 4 Pro, but the camera it uses is pretty mediocre compared to the flagship ZUK2 or Mi5 / Mi5s.

  • With your requirements… I think the Zenfone 3 would be a good phone, it's only $329, and it has everything you mentioned + full coverage of the Australian networks.
    I find the camera to be really good, possibly the best phone camera sub $350 at the moment.

    note that the pics have been compressed by Flickr, but still look great nonetheless.

  • Great suggestions here.

    Obviously the stand-outs are the Xiaomi Note 3 Pro (Band 28), and Mi 5.
    An old/used Galaxy S5 and Note 4 might still have some life left in it, just replace the batteries.
    The Nexus 5X is great, if cheap (and w/o issues).
    The Nexus 6P is too much for their needs.
    The OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T are great, but also probably out of their needs.

    Sounds like you're dad's using something like a Galaxy Ace 3…. so pretty much any phone would be an upgrade for him.

  • Motorolla G4 has a good camera, better than just about any chinaphone under 200
    G3 would also do if you can find it

  • What about Oppo. I have a Mirror 5s and my partner has the F1, both cost us little over $200. They have an Android based system called Color OS, it's a tiny bit different to the stock standard Adroid OS but still easy to navigate. Cameras are fantastic and always get comments on how crisp they are.

    Oppo is becoming more known in Oz, when I was in Malaysia last year on holidays I saw it everywhere, definitely going to get bigger over here.
