Who remembers other people's number nowadays?

    • +6

Exactly, then what's the point?, unless you have a Nokia 3310

      • +7

Thank you for reminding the 3310. It was a classic like Hyundai Excel.

      • +1

        Unbreakable phone

        • +15

          Unlike the Hyundai Excel.

      • +1

Unless u have a telecom phonecard!!!

      • What was wrong with the 3310 that makes you say that? I remember the Moto v3688, where for some reason it failed to look up the sender of an SMS against your phone book, showing their phone number instead.

        • +1

I remember this. Apparently, the SMS was using the number with country code and for phonecall, without the country code. So what I did was to create 2 same entries, one without country code and the other with country code. But this is a stupid way of doing as it basically reduced your phonebook size by half.

      • I still have mine, fully functional but no network will support 2g in a few months

    • +30

The only number I would actually pay money for be 0428 008 135

      • +1

        why is that?

        • +20

because I never passed the 4th grade

        • +2

          @outlander:
          Uhm, I don't get it.

        • +6

          @lasterato: it spells BOOBIES

        • +4

          @lasterato:
          042 BOOBIES

        • +1

@Kangal: Queue numerous prank texts telling that person "Heh! Your phone number spells boobies!".

Who remembers other people's number nowadays?

I cannot even remember my OWN phone numbers.

Back when Voda first came to AU in the early 1990's I bought a Nokia 2110 for $1000 and paid extra to get my own number.

You has free choice - they just told you the first part (0412 or whatever) and you chose the rest. There was no way to check other than to phone each number (to see if it rang or not).

I ended up with a number 0414 424 434, thinking that I was super cool. But it drove me crazy, due to the stupidity of humans.

ME: "My number is Zero Four One Four…"
      THEM: "0414 yep"
      ME: "Four Two Four…"
THEM: Hang on - did you say 0414 or 0424?"
      ME: "Arrrrghhhh!"

      • +28

You are now subscribed to cat facts

      • +5

Answer you god damn phone… Its me on the other side!

      • -1

2100 was announced in 2003 how'd you get it in the 1990s?

        • +1

          2110, not 2100.

The Nokia 2110 was a cellular phone made by the Finnish telecommunications firm Nokia, first announced in 1994. It is the first Nokia with the Nokia tune ringtone. [1] The phone has only basic functions like SMS send/receive, and lists 10 dialed calls, 10 received calls and 10 missed calls. A later version Nokia 2110i came with a bigger memory and a protruding antenna knob, which was released in 1995.

      • But it drove me crazy, due to the stupidity of humans.

The worst part for me is that everytime I read out my number I get told how cool it is and/or how did I get it. A few times each year I get a call asking if I'll sell it.

      • +2

Wouldn't it be easier to say Zero Four, One Double-Four, Two Double-Four, There Doub Arrrrghhh!

    • It's about remembering your own number these days - lots of situations where you have to tell the person you are talking to your number. I am super lazy, so I chose a number that has a total of 4 different numbers.

  • +8

So they're just advertising peoples new phone numbers so marketers could call them heaps? Excellent.

    • +1

I just opened a new line with a previous 2$ deal from 7/11 offer … after a day I got a telemarketer, a japanese dude and someone from the census who called me.

      • +5

I got notification from SPER Qld to pay thousands of dollars in fines or lose my drivers license.

When I called the government number, they casually said it was owed by the previous owner of the number. The $1 Telstra SIM had been sitting in my drawer for nearly 2 years so likely had been out of service nearly 3 years. Got a written apology from Transport Dept.

        The joys of recycled numbers.
If these premium numbers were in use recently, expect lots of unwanted calls😯

My old city business number was 1 digit different from the Liberal Party leader's office number - I had fun with those wrong numbers.

        • +1

SIM age has nothing to do with reusing numbers.

        • @Shonky
          That was a Shonky answer…

SIM age certainly does have a lot to do with telco's ability to reuse phone numbers - when it's a Telstra (prepaid) SIM as I stated.

Phone number is printed on the Starter Pack. So number could/should not be reused before the 2 year pack expiry (my pack was at expiry), and Telstra keeps number active for at least 6 months before reusing it on a Starter Pack😯

The free $2 Telstra Starter Packs deal in December 2016, had phone number printed on packs with expiry date Dec 2018. Those packs needed to be produced - possibly months earlier.

(Optus issues number at activation. That number may have been in use months before… for whatever purposes.)

People have to be really persistent to phone after a number has been dormant for that long - which is an advantage with Telstra PrePaid Starter Packs.

        • @Infidel:
Ok. That's true if you take the number pre-assigned to a SIM. The number is not fixed in the SIM and can be changed to any other number.

        • @Shonky:
The point is that a pre-assigned number cannot / should not be reused while the SIM is within expiry date.

So SIM age on those packs does or should prevent reusing of numbers associated with the SIM & hence time since phone number printed on Telstra pack could last be used.

The longer you hold onto a SIM with pre-assigned phone number (up to expiry) the longer time before phone number can be reused. So should be less unwanted calls for previous user - which was being discussed.

Opposite of your misleading comment - SIM age has nothing to do with reusing numbers.

If you want another number, then that's nothing to do with SIM age & a very different scenario to what I wrote. That number you choose may have just been in use.

But, the pre-assigned number was still held for the purchaser's use & hasn't been used for up to 3 years with a prepaid Telstra Starter Pack.

I like a well aged SIM with pre-assigned phone number😯

      • +1

        I got a few doozies
        Centerlink chasing up some money
Someone sending daily texts quotes of the quran
        some job agency
and some dude that just kept ringing and ringing, i put the phone on silent and just threw it in my bag to use the data

        • I had multiple calls and txts from a 'lady' called "Shazzza" who was looking for a gentleman named Gavin. She wanted to let him know that she "had a bun in the oven" and that she was almost certain that he or "Pete-the-motherf#@&&#" was the dad.

It was just a misunderstanding really. Turns out the father was the bloke next door.

  • +3

Haha, no 4s in the main number, let alone multiple.

  • +16

just seen a gumtree add charging $500+ for gold numbers so in my books this is a bagain. +1

  • Get one of the triple 8 numbers and you could apparently sell it for $150+
    http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/victoria/how-your-phone-num…

  • If i recall amaysim charges like $10 for "premium" or "gold" numbers

    • +1

      $30 for Gold Numbers

  • +5

Only a few with triples; mediocre at best. Quadriples or 6 digit patterns is where I would start considering numbers "golden".

    • +2

      Silver numbers then?

    • I got a number from Aldi last year with the following pattern xxx3 456 777. I didn't realise they were so valuable.

      • Sorry, misread the comment. Please ignore.

  • I already have a gold number
    0408TIGHTB

    • +4

      Mine is

      1800 OZB-JV

    • I wonder how many OzBargainers have now rung this number just to see if it is true.

      • +3

It's one digit short of a real number. I tried the ten alternatives for the last digit ( as they are free calls after all) and only one answered. It wasn't jv unless he runs a trolling business in western Sydney.

  • My mobiles 0430 followed by my first name and initial. Man that Telstra guy hated me when I set this up in my teens and everyone knew mine either heading out or the late night pickup.

    • +6

      0430 278 765 766 577? Catchy.

    • +5

Had a personalised number (04-my_first_name-123) in use & Telstra gave it away. My business advertising featuring the number. No one, including Telstra staff, thought that was even possible.

Telstra told the TIO I must have authorised the transfer as they didn't find any record showing I didn't. (No record of me transferring number in necessary 3 way conversation with the new owner, just no record I hadn't!) That's the type of logic the TIO said proved Telstra did no wrong & said too bad😠

  • Bring OneTell with own choice of numbers back!

    • +2

Do tell your friends about one.tel

  • +1

If those are "gold" numbers then my dad's must be diamond.

  • +5

    Fools Gold numbers😯
    Not very special.

  • At least they're trying something new to sell plans. Not really gold numbers though.

  • +1

When starting up my business a while back I followed someone else's advice and went into a not busy store at a time I thought would be extra quiet and asked if they could get me a good number, One of the guys was only too happy to break the boredom and spent probably 15+mins looking at different possibilities. I think my number is better than the "Gold Numbers" listed there.

    • Yeah if you ask nicely they usually will let you choose.

      • +1

You can wade through numbers on the amaysim site. Got the kids numbers that are 989 464. Easy to say over the phone and easy to remember

  • Gee whiz my number ahits all over these in diamonds and platinum chips, and it was a number off a list i saw started off with 041 and well almost in numerical order bar 2 digits swapped around.

  • I actually wanted to get one for kicks UT the cheapest plan is 30 per month

If it was ten I'd buy

  • +2

Who needs a triple 6 in there phone number?

    • The devil obviously

  • +12

    Unless I can get 0118 999 881 999 119 725 3, they ain't getting my money…

  • I can't understand the appeal in having gold numbers or customised plates…etc

    • Easy to remember.

    • Its like grills, when you give a chick your number.

  • +2

I got good number, sold it on Gumtree, he paid the money by direct deposit… $80, all cleared, then I went to transfer the number to him but he wouldn't go into Telstra shop to complete the transfer. Then he blocked me off gumtree after several followups, never even transferred it. It's probably expired by now. So bizarre.

  • +6

Too bad my number is now registered with countless two-factory authentication systems that I wouldn't ever dare changing it now.

    • +5

      countless two-factory authentication systems

How many factories? Two factories or a lot more? Any chocolate factories in there?

      • I wonder if they've got 2 sheds, to go with the 2 factories?
        :D

      • 2 bit authentication factories.

  • +1

I want the number 94811111 and then setup a premium service on it

  • +4

My brother sold his 0### 666888 number recently for $3000 to a Chinese buyer from Sydney. Very auspicious number according to the buyer.

    • Probably got resold for 50K+

    • What about xxxx 8x6666

      Can I sell it ?

      • +1

You need more 8 in your number, Chinese like number 8. I think it is a sign of luck

      • if there's not too much 4 in the number, 6666 is gold.

        • only one four

          04AA BACCCC

pretty much given it away now

        • @unclesnake: IMO it's a pretty lucky number. Good on you :) I don't know the market price for it but obviously it's beautiful

  • They are doing free gold numbers at the Optus store in Rundle mall as well. They are also giving away free $2 SIM cards, they are just in a stand out the front and you can take as many as you want

  • Chinese they are keen on the numbers specially the ending 6 & 8.

    • Sequencing matter, the 6 needs to preceed the 8 for it to make grammatical sense.

  • +3

If those are gold number, then mine must be Platinum+ number o.O

    • Yep same!

    • Ditto. I've got mine from way back in 2003. My wife has an even better phone number.

  • +1

I got a pretty decent number for free from Amaysim. 04xy xyy xzz. They let you search up to 5 consecutive numbers.

    • Agree. I got my 04xx 499 499.

      • +2

I'm off to make 100 phone calls

        • +2

100? You should only need to make 10 ;)

He said xx. Assuming x and x are the same.. so it'd be

          • 11
          • 22
          • 33
          • 44
          • 55
          • 66
          • 77
          • 88
          • 99
          • 00

There. Saved you 90% in time!

        • Yeah, give it a try.
          I'm waiting.

          Sorry for those people 😝

        • @illumination: what about 69 and 96

        • +1

          @unclesnake: Then it should've been 04xy =/

        • +4

@illumination: x=9 both turned upside down means x=6
