——— Website no longer shows 4MB free. Disregard deal, Vodafone has cancelled it. ———

Vodafone has recently changed the way they bill data on their Pay as You Go Plus prepaid plan. Minimum recharge amount is $10 and credit expires in a year (can be rolled over). This bargain is for people who have fairly LOW DATA USAGE, or people with usually low usage and occasionally high or very high usage (read further down).

Old billing: "2c per MB, charged per 512KB, first 512KB in each data session free"
New billing: "2c per MB, charged per 512KB, first 4MB in each data session free"

This is in all respects cheaper than the old way of billing.
I am still on a recharge from the old billing, and inside the vodafone app you can see each data session and the credit charge associated with it. It seems the app shows 1000KB of usage as "1.00MB", yet billing is actually "2c per 1024KB charged per 512KB". I must assume "4MB free" is really 4096KB free.

Data session?

Determining when data sessions reset is a bit tricky, since every phone and every carrier is different, but generally it can happen after set periods of time, idle time, moving between towers, losing reception, turning mobile data off, switching to wifi, restarting/aeroplane mode. There is some speculation in this whirlpool thread.
From my understanding, throughout a day if you're connected to mobile data you will probably have a lot of sessions.

Gimme a scenario

Let's assume you use 100MB (100,000KB) a week, and you're the kind that generally uses it for instant messaging, and quick browsing sessions. To be super conservative, Sat and Sun will only have 1 data session each, and the weekdays will have 3 each, with data split evenly. Sat & Sun will be 8MB and 4MB usage, and the 5 weekdays will be 2 days of 14MB, 2 days of 18MB, and 1 day of 24MB. = 100MB over 7 days.

Da maths results

  • 8000KB
    Old billing: 15c
    New billing: 8c
  • 4000KB
    Old billing: 7c
    New billing: 0c
  • 4667KB * 3
    Old billing: 9c * 3 = 27c
    New billing: 2c * 3 = 6c
  • 4667KB * 3
    Old billing: 9c * 3 = 27c
    New billing: 2c * 3 = 6c
  • 6000KB * 3
    Old billing: 11c * 3 = 33c
    New billing: 4c * 3 = 12c
  • 6000KB * 3
    Old billing: 11c * 3 = 33c
    New billing: 4c * 3 = 12c
  • 8000KB * 3
    Old billing: 15c * 3 = 45c
    New billing: 8c * 3 = 24c

And finally

  • Total 100MB (100,000KB)
Old billing total cost: $1.87 = avg rate of $18.70 per GB
New billing total cost: $0.68 = avg rate of $6.80 per GB

  • In other words, with that level of usage, with a $10 recharge:
    Old billing: 5.35 weeks, 534.759MB
    New billing: 14.7 weeks, 1470.588MB

And the value could be much greater too, depending on your particular low usage patterns. Or it could be worse, it depends :) .

tl;dr It's cheaper because of the free 4MB each data session, which can make up quite a lot overall. Good for people who mostly stick to instant messaging and just want to be connected.

But does this suit someone who has occasionally high usage? Like when tethering, weekends or on boring occasions?

It does actually… At any time you can purchase a 2GB data pack for $3 (edit: can use prepaid credit if you txt https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/289837#comment-4399519 ). This 2GB pack claims to last 1 day, but it actually means 1 day from the end of the CURRENT day. e.g. If you purchased it at 6AM on a Saturday, it would expire after 42 hours, at 12AM on Monday. There are other packs too, like 2GB over "7 days" for $7. http://www.vodafone.com.au/prepaid/add-ons . They roll-over too when you buy another add-on with the same "day"-tier.

In the above scenario, if you bought a pack every Saturday when you woke up, you would have an extra 2GB to use every weekend. Over 28 days you would have spent $14.40 for up to 8.368GB
And if you were the type to only need to buy one of the add-ons every 28 days, then you would have up to 2.4GB of data for $5.72

Effectively the rate of using these add-ons is $1.50 per GB, AND it's prepaid. If you're a heavy data user, this is probably the best value on prepaid at the moment. Just remember to flick into aeroplane mode and back to force-reset a data session after you buy the add-on or it won't start drawing from it!

Call rates are 20c a minute, and SMS is 20c each. Not the best value there I suppose, but not terrible. There is the option of using voip to save more on calls. siptalk on whirlpool offer 1.65c per minute to landlines and 6.6c per minute to mobiles. If you chose a low-bitrate codec it would be possible to keep short phone calls to under 4096KB. :>

edit: Oh actually they have a talk add-on, 100 minutes for $5 with 28 day expiry. So if you talk a fair amount that's also an option, if you used all of it then that's 5c per minute calls.

I hope I explained that okay. :)

NOTE: Users are reporting that the new billing hasn't come into effect for their accounts yet.

Agree…..and it will suit some out there.

Shit yeah, I'd plus an mb if I could. Well done.

Shrouded in mystery so teh consumers have no ****ing idea.

    • +13

It's an unavoidable part of cellular technology, and the vagueness is the very reason they're granting the first 4MB of each session to be free. This isn't some tricky way to rip you off, this is a consumer-friendly policy.

        • +10

Are you wilfully misunderstanding what is going on here? Your mobile phone connecting and disconnecting to towers (and the handshake data associated with that) is absolutely unavoidable. The 4MB free is just to avoid consumers getting billed for that. It's not even advertised anywhere except the fine print.

    • +4

      Yeah, it doesn't work properly.

I tried it but they merge some of the data sessions.

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/265975

Thread dated September 2016 if anyone wanted to know.

      • Yeah sounds like they're tricky. Did you try switching between 3G and 4G? Maybe even 2G?

I went to the post office for an hour or so a week ago. I remember my signal kept dropping out. Despite that, I only had 4 data sessions. 1.37MB, 2.58MB, 1KB, 1KB. 7c of my precious credit that could have otherwise been saved!

        Then 4 days later, Idk why, but I had a ton of sessions. 133KB, 1.52MB, 933KB, 1KB, 1KB, 2.03MB, 388KB, 847KB, 64KB, 30KB, 1KB, 1KB, 209KB, 34KB 1KB. rip another 7c.

        • Then 4 days later, Idk why, but I had a ton of sessions.

Delayed data? I recall the industry allows lost user data to be updated up to just over 6 months after usage.

  • The question should be, how do I switch to the new plan?

When I recharged $10 and it's still got me on the old plan.

    • :<

Maybe vodafone support can help. I wouldn't be surprised if they're confused too, since they didn't change the name of the plan at all -_-.

I was afraid that might be the case. I suppose if you were a new customer or you changed to a different plan then back it would probably work, but that would defeat the point of the bargain. They really should just force everyone onto it since it isn't a penalty for anyone. Lemme know if you do get on it, as I'm keen to get on it too.

      • I did some searching and the plan has been available for a few days now…

However, the CIS on the official website is still the old one.

I only recharged on Australia Day.

        • Something I find strange is the CIS says "charged in 512KB increments"…

I was so sure that when I joined it was charged per KB, not per 512KB. Is that another thing they snuck on us?
It still seems like they round down to the nearest cent based on my billing, which would indicate per KB. If it was per 512KB, then they would round up to the nearest cent, surely.

        • @musicinbed69: Yeh I was so sure it was per KB when i joined. But now I see they changed to the first 512KB for free, so I updated the post, maths is still correct tho.

        • @musicinbed69: Is the CIS I'm seeing from VF's website out of date or did they sneak back the 512kB free per data session? If it is indeed 512kB free now, then the content in the OP is incorrect. Or is there a more updated CIS?

        • @amts: They haven't released a new CIS yet I assume. If you look at rates and charges link it says 4MB free. But it doesn't seem like the billing has come into effect yet, silly vodafone.

        • @musicinbed69: Thank you for clarifying.

This will be great with Asus routers that have the fallback feature when the internet goes out as a backup

    • +2

Not really. As soon as the Cell kicks in, all your devices will fetch instantly off Vodafone and will definitely be more than 4MB to be counted as per data. It would be best on very low data usage devices such as IOT, Smartwatches (that have LTE) and very low end phones to use text apps (Whatsapp / Wechat /Viber etc).

So you just need an app that resets your 'session' after 3.9MB

    • -1

Managing small amounts of mobile data can be very difficult especially with automatic updates, and particularly with tethering, ie to Win10.

By the way, I'm pretty sure you can buy the data add-ons using the MyCredit.

    http://vodafone.intelliresponse.com/index.jsp?requestType=No…

How to buy add-ons with your prepaid credit

If you’re on a Pay As You Go Plus or 365 Days recharge, you can use your credit to buy Prepaid Add-ons.
    How to do it

Find the add-on you’re after below
Send a TXT to 1264 with its keyword
Follow the prompts to complete the purchase

Eg. to get the $5 Data Add-on, you’d send the code DATA5 in a text message to 1264.

    • thanks! updated :D . The app never gave me the option so I assumed it wasn't possible!

  • +1

Anyone looking at using this for IoT? or are there better options?

    • +1

This SIM would be an option for IoT I think.

I am now evaluating the Particle Electron kit - it comes with a 1MB per month data sim ($2.99?) and it's under Telstra Network (America and AUS version).
The only catch for this development board is, AUS version only supports 850MHz and 1900MHz. You cannot use AUS version for Vodafone and Optus SIM.

      ==========
      Date Usage total Cost ($)*
      29 Jan < 0.1MB -
      28 Jan < 0.1MB -
      27 Jan < 0.1MB -

      26 Jan < 0.1MB -

My current application is to flash the LED and send the counter value to the cloud - it updates every 2 minutes.

If you guys want to grab one kit and have some fun, I would suggest you grab 2G or Europe/Asia version (900/1800 MHz). Another Europe/Asia kit is on its way.
I am now using $30 Telstra Long Life SIM (purchased for $10) which lasts 6 months. I put an addon data - $5 for 30MB which is more than enough for IoT data.

I think if I want a asset tracking, I would still stick with Telstra because it gets the overall best coverage. Once I used up my Telstra plan, I would have a go with Long Life Aldi - I've already grabbed one $5 starter kit and I think the credit would last a year!

    • I'm using CMobile Red PAYG for my Samsung Gear S which will connect to my Phone whenever I am out. It's not a bad plan and only uses when you require it. Basically pay $20 for a year's worth of subscription with small amount of data and calls per month.

  • +5

This would be great to use with GPS car trackers that use tiny amounts data to send their location every few minutes.

  • This looks like a great deal. Unfortunately my Telstra prepaid data won't run out for a couple more years.

Better than the old TPG $1 / month PAYG plan

  • +1

noticed this too when signing up to the $99 Huawei Y6 phone, activated it for the PAYG plan. didn't know it was going to be this well received on OzB.

I left the phone on for a couple of days to wait for the gift card, and saw the usage online. Phone does about 1-2 dozen background sessions per day ranging from 4 kB to 10 kB while connected to WiFI. Nothing was charged from the balance. Pretty good imo!

PS in regards to the promo you need to make a call — calling 1555 or a 1800 number is fine so you won't use any credit to get the gift card.

  • +1

Too much reading of miniscule analysis.

    • +2

What is this? Analysis for ants?

  • sounds like a great deal. Looking for a cheap plan as a place holder for my personal number.
So if i dont use my phone for anything but read incoming sms now and then i could be paying only $10 for a whole year??

    • +1

if you just want to do a placeholder for a number, you should use amaysim PAYG on postpaid, then you can keep your number indefinitely and stay activated without paying anything at all. I have a really good "gold number" I got a few years ago and have been keeping it like this.

      • cool ill look it up
        thanks for the tip

  • what about phone calls? is vodafone to vodafone free?

    • Unfortunately not on their payg plans afaik.. Can confirm this because i used the vodafone $40 starter kit as a payg 365 day expiry, and made a call to a Vodafone number, and still got charged 20c for it.

    • Not on the Pay As You Go Plus. Local calls are 20c per minute, no flagfall.

Here you can find more info on the prepaid PAYG+ :

      http://www.vodafone.com.au/about/legal/critical-information-…

  • ALDImobile's Pay As You Go plan has cheaper rates for both SMS and calling, but data is at 5c per MB.

  • Is it possible to recharge less than $10 with Vodafone?

    • +1

      Ideally, only for data add-ons.

There is a MyMix $8 recharge which expires in a week but, with relevance to This bargain, the lowest PAYG+ recharge is $10.

      • Thanks!

  • What's the average google maps data usage these days? Ditch the old GPS, grab an old phone and $10 for a year (I would have wifi coverage at my origin for big map updates & caching).

    • Depends on the device, you can cache 'most' of google maps for offline use now.

  • Now someone needs to make an app that calculates how much data each webpage uses so we know who are the culprits and outliers of data usage. Ozb is pretty good as it is mostly all texts with few image overhead mostly just from thumbnails and ads.

Lol forget youtubing/snapchatting videos or watching facebook vids on this plan.. Probably like OP said only for texting and emailing or checking bus and train time tables on the fly etc restaurant/stores phone numbers and or contact details.

Good find OP this could be handy to some people.

  • +1

Too complicated for me. Good for those who make sense of it I guess. Id rather a nice large data pack with ling expiry and just use the service without resorting to nitty gritty of sessions and free allowances.

My understanding of a session is when the device "dials" into the carrier (think DUN or PPPoE on adsl). It allows for some disconnects ad the session can reestablish but only being disconnected after some time or ending the session mutually does it end. Of course the carrier has greater control over this, so they may "merge" sessions as they see fit.

  • +1

Does anyone know a iOS jailbreak tweak that will restart the session every 4 mb?

  • The app I modded can get free data lol but it's only for personal use.

  • Why the international call is 10x times cheaper than local call per minute?

    • No termination charges paid to Telstra or optus duopoly.

  • +1

Always think about this whenever 'Pay as you go' is mentioned:
    https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=rZfo0yhtxRQ

    • Have a good laugh - from the rest of the jokes as well … this guy is funny! :-)

  • -2

it all seems very good but wait you need good signal strength to actually consume data from vodafail

  • does anyone know if this will work with the free $2 sim packs at 7/11 or do you need to top up with a recharge first?

  • The website no longer states first 4MB free. It seems they have reversed their policy. I guess they realised they would make significantly less money off light-users.
