and this just about says it all

a $299 42" FHD gets no comments because the day of FHD tvs is largely dead?

if its not 4k its not worth anything?

I would buy this in a heartbeat if I needed a new TV.

I have older Soniq 42" FHD TVs as do both my relatives - a total of 5 of the bought at $399 each, mostly as second TVs. (Same model from a few years back that had a really good panel). The only complaints have been sound glitching (eventually fixed in a firmware update), a horrid almost unusable EPG (never fixed), and no ability to decode the video streams 9, 7, 10 full HD channels now broadcast (hardware codec issue that will never be fixed, requires a settop box if you want to watch those channels - SD channels work fine). All 5 still working fine.

If this TV is similar for quality, it would make an absolutely fantastic TV in the spare room, kids room etc. Or if money is tight at a pinch it would do fine as your main TV. The main problem I've found with Soniq is that their quality is not always good. I've had several bluray and DVD players die within or just outside warranty period. Don't expect any help from Soniq if it dies even a day outside of warranty. You might be able to take it to the ACCC if you want to take on that fight but it's just easier to avoid the headache.

As for Full HD vs 4K, until there is a lot more 4K content it's just a waste of money unless you have an otherwise identical TV at the same price or cheaper. For me the main reason I'd go with 4K is actually that it's harder to notice dead pixels when the pixels are smaller. That drives me nuts on Full HD sets.

        I agree with you sir. I have a DSE 40 for $225 and a Goodguys whatever 42" for $230.

They are disposable at this price, moreso the DSE for obvious reasons. They are absolutely fine with a set of 2.1 spks.

I only use them to watch news, watch TV shows from TPB and consoles.

I question the need for 4k TVs right now since I'm not willing to download 4k content nor do I care about 4k BR or consoles or PCs.

      • We have a 4 year old Soniq that decodes the mpeg4 channels just fine. Yours must be quite old?

The picture on it is excellent, only the sound is poor, but that's the case on many flat panel TVs.

        • Agreed. The Soniq IPS panel TVs are great value for money IME.

        • I'd have to check receipts but I'd say ours are 5-6 years old.

    • 4K at this price point would be barely watchable, the image would be utter crap. These are good for the price, but in reality still a shit picture.
The Soniqs do have a good sales point over the DSE/Kogans, and maybe the TCE, and that is frame-rate switching, so 23.976 fps that all film items, movies and tv are shot in. This allows for a smoother playback with no judder.

I have a E43V15B and this is what Kodi logs say the panel is capable of:

      Found resolution 1920 x 1080 for display 0 with 1920 x 1080 @ 23.976025 Hz
      Found resolution 1920 x 1080 for display 0 with 1920 x 1080 @ 50.000000 Hz
      Found resolution 1920 x 1080 for display 0 with 1920 x 1080 @ 24.000000 Hz
      Found resolution 1920 x 1080 for display 0 with 1920 x 1080 @ 25.000000 Hz
      Found resolution 1920 x 1080 for display 0 with 1920 x 1080 @ 30.000000 Hz
      Found resolution 1920 x 1080 for display 0 with 1920 x 1080 @ 59.940060 Hz
      Found resolution 1920 x 1080 for display 0 with 1920 x 1080 @ 60.000000 Hz

Our E43V15B does emit a electronic high pitch sound that you can hear when there is no audio playing and it's on. A few others have noticed this, and returned it due to playing it at a low level in bedroom at night and hearing it.

      • If you were to compare that Soniq model with this model ($298):

        https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/gva-42-inches106cm-fhd-led-lc…

How do you think they'd go head-to-head?

I'm only ever going to be using this in a temporary gym setup.
So I don't want to go more than Full HD (1080p).

        Thank-you!

        • No idea, I took a USB stick with a few movies & TV shows at different frame rates to see what would happen, DSE did not switch, it stayed on 60fps, Kogan said none of theirs did.
Having frame rate switching is important for fluid playback, I never tested the Good Guys ones.
This was a year ago, so maybe Kogan has improved, no idea, don't care. There is a convenience of being able to get it from a shop down the road, and knowing less hassles if any warranty.

      • Would you any any of these are better than the Soniq in this Ozb post, or the GVC I referred to in my previous post?

        Thanks again.

        • Kogan, as above.
Those Soniqs are clearly much older models, so pass.

        • @snuke:

Damn I only just noticed your 2 posts, I keep forgetting this site doesn't send emails, only a little notice in the top-right if you live on this site, LOL! Maybe there's an "app" that I'm better-off using…

          Yeah in-the-end I just went with the Soniq model in this ad, scratched the other 2 Soniqs, scratched the Kogan & GTV too;
Is that the way you would've gone amongst these 5, or too hard for you to say IYHO???

Didn't have time to screw around with dozens more comparisons, I'll get FAR more pedantic when I buy our main TV at the very end of the year! I'll be collecting it tomorrow, it was ready today, but I ran out of time to get there before they close! ;-P

          Cheers dude.

Is that the way you would've gone amongst these 5

          Yep

        • @snuke:

          Hmm concise, LOL… :-P
Got her tonight, well set her up tomm.

          All the best!

  • Anyone know if these do 1:1 pixel mapping to use with a media pc?

    • It does PC mode via VGA or HDMI.
It doesn't have any Smart TV features nor a builtin WiFi adapter.

This model should be okay with a gaming console or a media pc.

  • Anyone got some suggestions for tweaking the display settings on these for optimum picture ?
