Mate Communicate - NBN

So I've taken the plunge and decided to give it a try to Mate Communicate for unlimited NBN

As they allow for BYO modem - I wanted to check if its worthwhile going with your own modem?

Also have a Sagemcom f@st 3864 from Optus but not sure if the same would work with Mate.

Anyone has experience is dealing with one providers modem to connect to another providers NBN connection.

The Sagemcom F@st is an extremely hum-ho modem router, it only does B/G/N, operates in the already congested 2.4 ghz network and doesn't support dual band wifi (5ghz). It does have some useful features like DECT and has the ability to pair up with some DECT cordless phones… but IMO, there are much better NBN routers you can get.

The bundled $149 dollar option that you get from Mate (the Netcomm NF8AC) is a much better alternative. I'd consider either that or a TP LINK VDSL modem (e.g TP Link Archer VR400 or the Archer VR600). The Netcomm NF8AC is actually a clone of a Billion BiPAC 8800AXL, it also copies it's internal antenna design which is frankly terrible.

The TP LINK is preferable if you want a better router with greater range.

    • Great info Scrimshaw. What modem would you recommend for Mate Communicate if I wanted to use the modem in bridge mode with my Asus wireless router?

any cheap one will do. Draytek Vigor 130 (gigabit ports), or TP-Link TD-W9977 (no gigabit port). They do come with routing functions, but just disable them and use them in bridged mode.

        • Thanks mate. Would this be better than the Netcomm NF10WV?

        • @jeeg:

          Netcomm NF10WV?

it's pretty junky according to WP

        • @scrimshaw:

Thanks! I will research more about the Draytek. Cheers again.

        • @scrimshaw: I checked that the draytek is using a Lantiq chipset not a broadcom one. Is this an issue? I was led to believe that Broadcom is the best chipset for vdsl…

  • Thanks for the detailed insight and certainly consider getting a modem from Mate (primarily for them to be able to extend support).

I was keen to understand if Sagemcom F@st provided by Optus would be locked to them in anyway such that it cant be used with another provider.

  • I was thinking of moving to this provider. We love to hear your experience with them.

  • Went ahead with mate and so far so good. The optus modem didn't work so ended up getting netgear modem.

    • Was looking at moving to Mate from AB, would be great if you could share your experience now that it has been some time…

      • Mate were good and supportive when setting it up with BYO modem however they didnt have support available over weekend Have moved to another provider but with experience internet is not a commodity but a necessity these days so if support is important make sure you are okay with their availability.
