Melbourne Return Milan/Italy (April and May) w' Air China $846 @ IWTF

200

Hey all,

Played around with some travel dates and saw that pretty much all of April and May you can fly return from Melbourne to the fashion capital of the world (Milan) for $846.

Negatives:
You're stopping in Shanghai on the way (could be a positive if you wanted to explore for 13hrs on your return leg)
it's Air China (never flown with them but are ranked at #87 out of 100 which isn't great) http://www.worldairlineawards.com/awards/world_airline_ratin…
Pros:
It's Milan (⌐■_■)
Dates include Easter Holidays eg 11-18th April (Good Friday 14th, Easter Sunday 17th) Proof http://imgur.com/a/UiMfh
You can travel to other parts of Europe if you're keen (eg Switzerland) as you're in Northern Italy already
The Italian VISA requirements are great, with no VISA fee for tourism travel http://www.statravel.com.au/italian-visa.htm
Stable country with low level risk http://smartraveller.gov.au/countries/europe/southern/pages/…
The weather in Milan in April/May is very temperate with average temps of between 15-25 degrees
It's under $850 and you can also price match/beat by $1 with Flight Centre if you'd rather do pay at Bricks and Mortar company

Hope this helps someone :)

  • Air China is truly terrible. Spend an extra $150 and go a full service, better airline

What issues did you have? Was it other passengers, poor staff, food, delays?
And for context can you compare long haul on budget carriers like Air Asia/Scoot/Jetstar?
Just trying to understand where they fit on the spectrum between long haul Greyhound bus and Emirates air Suite.

      • I flew business class with them a few year's back (several times). The only good thing was they had fully flat bed seats.
The crew were terrible. The food was terrible. The IFE was terrible. The seat wasn't overly comfortable…

        …now apply that to economy.

Longest I've flown on Jetstar was a red-eye from Perth to Cairns. That was a terrible flight anyway (all red-eye flights suck). Still, give me an iPad and a power bank and I'd be more comfortable flying Jetstar long-haul economy compared to Air China.

Air China are part of Star Alliance so if something goes wrong it should be possible to accommodate you onto other flights. Not always the case with other low cost airlines.

  • Milan is not far from Venice…. in May the weather is awesome, just remember pizza and coffee aren't like Australia

Pizza & coffee is no worse in Italy compared to Australia - just get out of the typical tourist traps…

Probably, but their idea of those is different to Australian expectations, I'm just saying.
Milan is a great city to visit, likewise Bologna and Venice.

Also a short drive to Switzerland and France, Chamonix is well worth a visit.

If you have the stomach for it, driving on the Autostradas is an experience.

Both coffee and pizza that we enjoy in Oz came via Italy, so I'm at a loss to understand.
Australia was probably the first country outside Italy to serve a cappuccino, or at least the first where it was popular.
An espresso is a short black, a longish black is an Americano anywhere near tourists, and a flat white is cafe au lait.
More difficult is tea, as the local barista seems to want to serve it with warm milk.
Pizza is pretty great, with typically tastier tomato and fresh basil on a super thin crust, without the wall-to-wall cheese dominoes serves up.
        Tastes pretty good.

        • Deadset, my wife (then girlfriend) landed in Milan as leg 1 of our first European adventure together, we checked in to our hotel and walked down to a cafe to get some coffee to try and wake up from the flight, she ordered a "latte" and I got a strong cappuccino. My cappuccino was perfect and her latte just came out as hot milk, no coffee. We laughed for 5 minutes straight, was the funniest thing. We then learned from the waiter in broken English we need to order a "cafe latte" when in Italy to have the coffee added.

Ahh. The lessons you learn whilst travelling :)

As for the pizza, agree 100% with keggs, a simple margarita has never tasted as good as it did in Italy.

        • PIZZA in Italy is normally very good. Moreso if you avoid the tourist zones. It is different though as your average Italian pizza is simpler with less toppings. Aussie Pizzas generally have many and complicated toppings. There is no right or wrong, they are just in the main different beasts.

COFFEE on the other hand is generally no where near as good as say in Melbourne. REASON: (This was explained to me by my Italian Cycling Guide in Tuscany who had worked also in Melbourne.) Normal coffee in Italy, mainly espresso, is bought cheap and made quick. Emphasis is to just get it out quick amd keep price low. Emphasis in Melbourne is to get it out right. This costs more as more staff time is spent, and at the better places the beans will be better too. So as with many things in life you get what you pay for.

  • I can see similar prices from Sydney for Paris and Frankfurt as well.
In regard to the comment that they have climbed the rankings, that appears to be the confusingly names China Airlines. Air China appears to be resting down at position 87.

    • ◉_◉ Oh you are right! My apologies; corrected!
