How do you even get it in the hole?
But seriously I was considering this till you posted that.
WTF are you doing with your phone that 2GB is insufficient?!
I still use a Samsung Galaxy S5 and its fine for everything (day2day, games, youtube, camera, snapchat, remote control, etc)
Most the bloat can be removed without root, paired with Nova Launcher and its a fantastic phone.
Package disabler pro (Samsung) on Google play works wonders for an unrooted S5.
I just use the Google Now Launcher on the Tab S and it works fine. Have you tried any launchers?
Works amazing with a custom ROM. You get Android 7.1 (nougat) and no bloatware. I recommend Cyanogenmod (soon to be LineageOS)
How do you install it? A newbie here.
@virhlpool:
http://wiki.lineageos.org/devices.html
Find your device in the list (assuming it's on there) and follow the "install" instructions. It may take between 15 minutes to an hour of your time though.
Yes
Most people generate their own bloated software by turning Automatic updates ON. So every app in your phone is automatically updated (i.e significantly bloated) whether you use the app or not and usually even if the app is working fine; in which case there is no justification for upgrading.
TIP 1) Turn AUTOMATIC UPDATES OFF and just selectively update apps that definitely need updating (i.e. no longer working) and your phone won't become bloated. NB Many updates are just enabling more advertisements!
TIP 2) Go through your apps and DISABLE any apps which you are not using. This way they wont update. Google+, Google Play Books, Google Play games, Google Play Movies and Google Play Newsstand are classic examples of apps you probably dont use and so can be Disabled. Also most of the Samsung apps on a Samsung phone.
TIP 3) Use alternative apps to Chrome and Facebook as these 2 gobble up most of your RAM. I find the stock android browser works great (10MB vs 80MB for Chrome) and for Facebook try MINI for Facebook or Swipe(about 12MB vs 300MB+ for Facebook)
If you employ these 3 tips even 1GB is plenty!
How to get stock Android browser?
Always part of Android app set in any phone. Look for the blue world icon called "Internet" but may be a different coloured icon depending on Android version
The next generation of the best-selling Galaxy handsets has arrived
JB Hi-Fi seriously needs to update the description.
2014 called - they want their next generation of Galaxy handsets back
Depends on what you use the phone for. I have an S5 and it is more than adequate for basic internet surfing, video watching and playing some games on it and the reception is quite good. Android OS can also be upgraded to the Marshmallow OS system, another little bonus.
I intend to keep the phone for at least another 12 months if not longer unless it breaks down.
Samsung Galaxy S5 is still the best one yet. Great everything including being water resistant and is the last to have removable battery and memory card slot for adding more memory.
HINT: Runs best on KitKat 4.4.2 - do not upgrade!
Yes get
I think its a better deal than some of the crappy chinese phones all the specs are still good. You wont get nougat, but its still getting security updates. Has November 2016 updates.
Better than some Chinese phones, but at this price I think it's still a bit much for what you get.
And it has band 28 ……Unlike some Chinese phones …..
Chinese phones are better value. I tend to avoid them because of potential security risks. We are not allowed to use Lenovo in the workplace anymore or any chinese smartphone as our work phone
Inetersting a work place takes security so seriously. What industry is that in?
Engineering and Medical
We have a similar policy.
I have a similar question, what industry also prohibits those phones.
Infrastructure.
We have very specific policy about using IT products in China. Due to confidentiality agreement, I can't disclose more.
That's just dumb, and maybe a little bit racist. It's OK to use an American phone, made in China, or a Korean phone, but not a Chinese phone? The only real problem I've heard about is some Chinese phones don't have IMEI, so can't be traced and are favoured by terrorists. Just silly to ban all Chinese phones, though.
Americans write the hardware and software. The phones are just manufactured in China.
It is not dumb. We don't need the opinion of a lay person to judge our decisions.
Couldn't care less if it sounds racist. The Chinese are not our friends and can't be trusted.
You should run for govt. and abolish all trade, tourism and international students.
While you're at it, put on your tin foil hat because they're spying on us as we speak.
The only reason is because some Chinese phones dont have IMEIs and can't be traced. Your employer wants to track your usage and is spying on you. They can't be trusted and are not your friend!
Your employer wants to track your usage and is spying on you.
Only if you are using employer's phone though. Not in case of personal phone usage.
What security risks specifically that Chinese companies are lenient with and others not?
I have one of these from work and my wife's $180 Xiaomi is better in just about every way (camera is probably the only exception)
my wife's $180 Xiaomi
Which one is that? Link?
Redmi Pro 3 Similar to this (they change models often)
http://www.banggood.com/Xiaomi-Redmi-3-Pro-5-Inch-Fingerprinā¦
My sister just bought a Note 4 for $193 from this deal on my recommendation and has been over the moon with it
https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/284158
The Xiaomi models are very confusing, but come up on special here quite often
Of course there is the risk with warranty but one I am prepared to take to get such a good phone for so cheap
Awesome, thanks for the info, very helpful :)
Well the camera is the "standout" function that makes Samsung Galaxy S series the best Android phone by far. You no longer need to carry a separate camera. All the other brands are still trying to catch up with Samsung on this one. So thumbs down to the Xiaomi.
"camera is probably the only exception"
Well that sucks… I just bought a Xiaomi (as an upgrade to my S5) and it's on its way from China now - one of the reasons I wanted to upgrade was because I wasn't happy with the S5 camera. Although nothing can be worse than the S5 Front facing camera - absolute garbage. The rear camera on the S5 was great in daylight but sucked at night. I heard Xiaomi had good cameras?
Oh well.. I also wanted a better battery in a phone than the S5 as the 2800ma one is too small for the hardware IMO.
I'm not saying this isn't a bargain but I paid $459 2 years ago. Why hasn't this phone gone down more? It was for a grey import but nevertheless, it should be cheaper!
I think it hasn't gone down much because of what other people in this thread are saying - its still a great performing phone, plus other perks such as removable battery, sd card, waterproofiness etc.
My wife uses one and loves it. Still going strong.
So does my Wife haha. She has no problem with it but I told her in 2 years she can update (And in March it will be 2 years)! I think she'd be better off staying with the S5 but she thinks it's old tech now, I told her I'm waiting for it to get under $500 but it's just not happening!
Also waterproof so not too many competitors with weather / water proof.
You can get the G900A or G900T models on eBay for about $278 delivered. Similar to the Australian G900i model - maybe 1 or 2 bands less.
On Gumtree for $315 but exact model not given
just $30 OFF the ticket price?
At this price, wouldn't you rather buy the leaner Motorola G than this old phone?
I own one. Very good once you've installed cm14.1 (lineageOS).
Just keep in mind that the Touchwiz camera is much better (I've found), & you also lose your warranty if you trip the KNOX.
Maybe only a bit better but IMO it's worth the trade off. There's no shutter lag and 4k video still works.
Definitely have to disagree with you there. This is Oz stock with 2-year manufacturer warranty - got to be worth $100 alone - not a grey import with a useless seller warranty. Stock works fine on this phone, and not worth ditching the warranty for a custom rom.
Install Samsung USB drivers and install Odin on your pc
Install twrp recovery using Odin from twrp.me and get the klte version
Install resurrection remix from recovery - https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s5/unified-developmeā¦ download the kltedv version
Install opengapps
Very latest android and security fixes. Super smooth. No bloatware.
Samsung rom and i have been gettjng every security fix to date.
Again, bad advice. This has a 2-year manufacturer's warranty, it's not DWI/ebay grey import. Install a custom rom and it's bye bye warranty.
Each to his own!
Old but not obsolete
Was a better deal a month ago with Amex cashback $387 -$100= $287
Yeah that was extraordinary value
Officeworks $385. Possibly price match.
Moto G4 Plus is a way better handset in this price range, and no bloat.
Wish it had NFC as well.
If you need NFC upgrade to the Moto Z Play, I still don't feel there is a huge demand for NFC.
There isn't, but it's growing because Android Pay, which I use often.
@Simoneister: Is it still only ANZ that support it? I wanna use it but it's just not accessible with my bank.
@CLoSeR: westpac is on board with other small banks
@CLoSeR: ING and AMEX support Android Pay
nab has their own app for touch banking that requires NFC. I use NFC all the time for pairing with my Canon camera, Bluetooth speaker, and Bluetooth headphones - one touch and connected. Had NFC for years and never used it, now I couldn't do without it.
Anyone know if there is a better price and/or seller than This?
Motorola Moto G4 Plus XT1642 Dual LTE 32GB Black A8138,
$352 delivered,
t-dimension2 (Hong Kong)
EDIT lol, "SAVE AU $1 WHEN YOU SPEND AU $300 OR MORE"… oh boy, a dollar!
I'd spend a bit more and buy local stock, been burnt before on HK phone purchase. The 32GB model has been available from Mobileciti for under $350 during previous eBay 20% off sales, if you can wait then wait.
Thanks, will wait then :)
Time to buy! $32GB 3GB RAM version on sale for $353 at Mobileciti!
@CLoSeR: Thanks?!
Had this phone for around 6 months. In overall, S5 is a great phone. The only concern I had before was the camera. It takes too long to focus on object before taking a photo.
TIP. Touch the screen on the spot you wish to focus. Very quick!
WOW! This phone is around 3 years old now, and it still considered a bargain at over $350?
Was +$700 new. The S5 is still very responsive compared to the S7. The camera is good and takes high quality photos.
Also the Australian dollar was much stronger when this phone first came out.
Much as I hate to say it, this phone is still competitive at this price. Not sure that I would call it a bargain though.
I looked around to try and find a better phone at this price. There wasn't one. Ultimately the cheaper phones don't have as good camera (not just talking mega pixels here), screen or start dropping off features like NFC etc.
And compared to S7 has removable/replaceable battery and expandable memory too
They both have replaceable battery and expandable memory. Yeah the s5 is easy to replace and swap for more battery life, but then we are looking at 3 year old phone that probably won't get any more updates, and is inferior in many aspects to newer models.
@Ronnnie: Well Samsung marketing would like to make you think so but not true. Ask any of the loyal S5 owners like myself. Definitely no value in updating to S7. And S5 is currently updating to Marshmallow for those that want the latest. For me this phone was designed for and works best on KitKat.
I prefer a phone not only 16G but why TGG/JB/HN only got S5 16G on sale
A 64 gig card is like 25 bucks. Is it really an issue?
I have an S5 and a lot of apps require installation on the internal memory. Adds up quick.
No they dont! You are being had! Totally unnecessary!!! Turn OFF AUTOMATIC UPDATES. Go into your APPS manager and uninstall all updates that slipped through. Only update apps that are no longer working and definitely dont update apps that you dont use.
And Disable all apps which you dont use.
not wanting to be negative but the front facing camera on this phone is a literal potato don't buy it if you take lots of selfies
Same price at officeworks if peops are trying to claim a price guarantee from The Good guys.
My iPhone break yday, so I decided to convert to Samsung as mum has a S4, that still works fine. Bought the s5 for $360 from JB HI Fi Highpoint. Price matched with Good Guys and paid cash.
It's $100 cheaper on ebay.
The galaxy a7 2016 model is a much better buy, and on ebay, a similar price.
Good luck with warranty and actual new stock on eBay
Lol why the negs. You all love au stock enough to overpay for it? Enjoy.
Meanwhile I am still using an S3. Works perfectly tbh
Same here!
The AMOLED screen and camera work day to day, phone speed only stutters when running intensive programs or in heat.
Great removable battery feature
Loved the s3, i have the limited edition with 32gb and i must say the screen even though was 720p was great in pure daylight, so easy to use and i had an extended battery that made it last 3 days of heavy usuage too.
Galaxy S3 is the most reliable phone. However you guys will find the S5 has a MUCH BETTER CAMERA and much better, bigger screen. Other than that the S3 is a great phone.
Just ordered one white at Officework (I like removable battery) i used LG G2 for more than 3 year until now which is non removable battery, the phone still work well but the battery became very bad now, it restart my phone randomly, and just about a hour and have to recharge the phone again and again
BTW: which screen protector good for this phone guys Thanks, i went to search on Ebay, but its show many many make me confuse, not sure if them will fit Australia S5 or not. I will order one custom case from aliexpress later , also ordered a 128gb Sdcard which is 20% of from Ebay for this S5 :) http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/162218776417
I have a glass screen protector and no loss in screen sensativity.
After using the s5 for aome time i have to say there is a lot going for this handset, it might be an old handset but it still battles on and there are so many features included with this handset that really dose cement this as a great handset.
Also must mention the note 4, best of the notes if you ask me.
s5 is old,just go for a $200 chinese phone.
and come back again in less than 1 year.
Upgraded from a gs5 to a redmi note 3 early last year for $200, was an upgrade in every way. Not going back lol.
Is 2GB RAM usable on Samsung heavily bloated OS without rooting it? My Tab S is not usable even with 3GB RAM on it.
