Whew boy, 20 hour flights. I wish we had more cheap direct flights, I can't stand the time wasted in layovers, I'd rather pay an extra 100 or so for a direct via Qantas :(

    • +12

not just time, it sucks the holiday spirit out of you as well as you arrived tired at the destination

      • +4

I'm old enough to remember the time when a train trip of a few hundred km to or from country NSW could take upwards of 24hrs; in far less comfortable environs than modern aircraft/airports used to travel many thousands of km in comparison; so the layover/transit time wouldn't worry me…

        Those baggage charges though… :/

        • in 5 years people will be complaining about the 3 hours it takes to get to London from Australia, and i'll remind them of the 20 hour flights to tokyo we endured in 2017 :)

        • +6

@skimmermilk:5 years? You are rather optimistic. Try 50 years.

        • +3

@Daabido: I'm pretty sure that's also the projected timeframe for completion of the high speed Newcastle to Sydney link! ;)

        • +2

the projected timeframe is 5 years. The actual timeframe will be 50 years.

    • +1

Last year I got lucky and snagged some direct return flights from Melbourne-Tokyo for ~500 including baggage and meals, still can't believe how fortunate I was. Was also from mid Oct - early Nov so the weather was pretty much perfect.

      • Whoa sounds great. When did the sale occur and for which airline? Very curious.

        • +1

I'm guessing Jetstar as I paid around the same flying in November. They don't fly direct any more though…

        • @dtra: Yeah that's the one, Jetstar for me! Oh they don't? Bugger. I was probably hoping to go back some time in the next year or two..

  • +21

Unlike Jetstar Air Asia flights aren't direct. This means you will pay 4x baggage fees. Checked baggage will cost $156 for 20kg, $196 for 25 and $236 for 30kg.

    • +2

      Ouch!

    • +8

if this is true, its something the 'I want this flight' should be highlighting, especially as they are a travel agent

    • +1

I've never been charged more than once for any 'stops', so long as my TICKET is direct (regardless of flight path).
Are you 110% sure? Is that written somewhere? I fly a fair bit.

      • I'd like to hear from the OP on that…a lack of disclosure for a hidden charge of that magnitude is damn near neg-worthy IMHO.

      • +1

Those prices are straight from the addons page at the third step of the air Asia booking process.

        • Wow, thats messed up in that case!

        • @MasterScythe: 100% Have flown with Air asia a few times to Japan and other places that have the layover.. You pay per flight = 4 flights… Cheap flight of $500 ends up being just a bit less then paying for a full service airline… Wouldnt Fly air asia to Japan again unless I was getting a real cheap flight…$500 or under inclusive of luggage.

    • +1

If this is true, I don't think this is a 'deal'. Qantas sale was a little while ago for ~$700 flying direct return Melbourne and I think that included meals and 20kg baggage…correct me if I'm wrong.

  • +5

Those stop over times though. Did it once never again.

    • +2

I did pretty much this same kind of flight. Would never recommend.

      • +1

It's ok if you have access to airport lounge I suppose.

    • Longest stop over I've done was 26hours in Tokyo airport on an outbound.
It was bearable, but only just.

Anything more than 6 hours starts to be annoying.

  • +5

Really not worth the layover and baggage charges.
For anyone going to Japan, just wait a little bit more, Jetstar usually has $600 tickets multiple times a year (you still have to pay for baggage, but not as much)

    • +2

Actually you can expect to pay less than that. We're going in May and we paid around $480 each for a family of 5 including 50kg of luggage and entertainment for the kids. Others might take more luggage than us but we travel light. We'll also need to buy some food for the plane.

      • Yep - we're going in May from Sydney and paid $500 each return with 1x20kg luggage allowance.

We paid for Jetstar meals once on the Japan flight, never again. I think buying food for the plane is the way to go!

  • +2

I've done Melbourne>Osaka, Tokyo>Melbourne with Airasia, all via KL obviously. I wouldn't recommend it unless you spend some time in KL each way.

We stayed in KL for a couple of days on the way over which made it OK but on the way back we went direct and it was pretty horrible. I'd say either spend some more time in Malaysia or just wait for a Jetstar special for direct flights.

  • +5

I was procrastinating about buying my tickets to Japan this year for ages, i couldn't decide if i wanted to go an asian airline and stay in china for 20+ hours. I ended up paying $1500 return for two people on Jetstar last week, with food and luggage, and that's a direct flight from gold coast.
for the extra couple of hundred I reckon it's worth it.

  • +2

Gone 2 years in a row for Halloween - even bumped into a fellow OZB member on the dancefloor in Shibuya. Highly recommend late October, might be worthwhile waiting for the Jetstar offers to roll through. Flew with AirAsia late last year to KL, unlucky to have bad service and delayed flights.

    • Halloween in asia is awesome, especially japan.

I wish AirAsia/Jetstar/Scoot would to Brisbane even if it's $100 more than the Gold Coast…

  • A long shot. But anyone have tips for getting cheapish flights to Japan during Christmas period or the following few weeks. only time I get holidays :(

  • i went to japan a few years ago when jetstar or virgin had their sale. $600 return, or $1200 return "premium economy\business class". While the seating wasn't comparable to say Qantas's business class, the entire airport journey, you get treated as a business\first class customer, which means, priority baggage check in, priority passport, customs etc the works. so getting onto and off the plane, is a breeze, compared to doing it in economy, which is line after line after line. i was honestly off the plane and thru customs in 10 minutes, whereas economy was a minimum of 45min

It makes a big difference to your stress levels and the overall enjoyment of your trip, as most people now dread doing the whole airport "thing".

  • I went to Tokyo on a Jetstar sale fare two years ago - just when Japan was becoming a hot destination again. 300 one way inc luggage! and 250 on the return leg! - And that was the direct Melbourne to Tokyo flight too - arriving into tokyo as the sun was rising out the plane window. Unfortunately due to demand, you wont find fares like this anymore for direct flights like this.

  • Cheaper than I flew last time at $600!

  • I know the post says Jul - Sep but does this sale also include Oct/Nov? I just had a search and it looks like return flights from Perth departing end of Oct and coming back mid Nov are $520. Is that a sale fare or a non-sale price?

  • So where does Air Asia fit in the scheme of things?

    Qantas, Virgin or Jetstar/Ryanair?

  • Weather there would be humid and stuffy during that time. I did it once, should've went during another season

Thanks for being a legend :)

    • +1

thats nice of you - this is the reason why i enjoy OZB

      • IWTF is the legend. I've been on a lot more holidays thanks to him/her :)

  • +2

I appreciate everyone's input. Thank you for taking time out to warn others about the downside of long layovers. This is what makes OZB great. Not just the bargains but I always appreciate the "reviews" and warnings. :)

A couple of weeks ago Jetstar had a sale for flights in April(Cherry Blossoms!) Gold Coast - Narita (return)
Snagged 3 return flights for $1200 baggage included, $400 return! BARGAIN!

  • I've been told by a friend who works for Qantas that every Australian airline company as of Feb 29th will no longer be providing direct flights to Tokyo.

    • You can still book flights with jetstar to Tokyo that are direct after Feb 29th. Maybe your friend is talking about a specific city or airline, but it looks like direct flights are still offered.

    • +1

Yeah, definitely not true. Qantas announced late last year that it was starting direct Melbourne-Tokyo flights as a replacement for Jetstar direct flights:

      http://www.qantasnewsroom.com.au/media-releases/qantas-adds-…

ANA offers a pretty decent (fairly pricey) direct Sydney-Tokyo(Haneda) flight on their 787s

  • +1

I would not recommend purchasing from AirAsia. Long stopovers, and they charge an obscene amount for extras. My 20kg checked luggage for return flights will cost me $312. This will be my first and last time flying with AirAsia, that's for sure! It cost a total of about $1450 for 2 return flight tickets. Not that much cheaper than direct flights from other airlines.
