Hey guys so…
I consider myself fairly tech savvy but how do VPNs work exactly? Aren't you redirecting ALL your traffic through the VPN, meaning you can only get information as fast as the VPN can send/receive it? I ask because I can no longer use the pirate bay and would quite like to again, hence I figure I'll need a VPN.
All net traffic goes through a VPN.. Once connected (you typically run a client program on your PC and you connect to a server), all web requests are sent thru that network but the data is encrypted before it is sent. Typically with a VPN service, the speeds are usually limited because the VPN server usually serves not just you but also everybody else who happens to be a customer.
the other factors for slow down would be overheads, and the time taken to encrypt and decrypt. These processes take time and CPU power.
Though some people do use a VPN just for the sole purpose of torrenting. And there are a couple of dozen VPN's that do support P2p but some do not protect you when it comes to privacy. To see which is best, you can use https://thatoneprivacysite.net/ which is a site that rates and reviews all the VPN providers available.
