iPad Air 2 128GB Model Stocks Are Very Low(Sold Out). Is This Intentional?

I've recently sold my macbook pro to upgrade my aging ipad mini 1. The money is still on hold in paypal but I decided to check prices from various place.

The exact model I was seeking was iPad Air 2 128GB Silver Wifi.

There were 2 cheapest places, both available in store. Officeworks($619) and Dick Smith(629). The oficeworks stock was unavailable since last week so I was planning to purchase it from DickSmith if I received my money this week. But they are also out of stock too.

I'd understand one place running out of stock but two places in a similar time felt a bit strange.

My current best guess would be they sold all their stocks during december and haven't ordered yet.

I've contacted Officeworks last Friday and they have told me that they dont even have the estimate date on when they will have them available.

What do u think happened? and u reckon I'd be able to purchase one before 20th of this month?

Edit: just realised my local offcieworks dont have ANY iPad in stockā€¦.. This is just weird.
Edit 2: Dick Smith stocks are back, but Officeworks is still empty….

  • I don't think there was much stock of the 128GB model to begin with.
And Apple surely wasn't manufacturing much of them.

So the shortage could definitely come from a recent demand spike.
Or it could be that, they're drying up current stocks to introduce a new model.

Personally, I'm not sure about the new models.
Will they axe the headset port as well? Maybe.
Will they add a USB-C port? Maybe.
It's crazy… maybe they will add a USB-C port, a Lightning Port, and remove the headset jack… Cook-Ive have really gone overboard since the days of the iPad Mini.

LOL You honestly think Apple will add a USB-C port? Yer dreamin', mate. They've literally just removed the headphone jack on the latest iPhones so consumers use the lightning port for audio - why the flip would they then go to USB-C on their iPads? Ludicrous

      • Well, because recently Apple has been going quite crazy that's why.
We have a 12.9in iPad for frank sakes!
What about The Macbook? Or the new MacBook Pro's?
They've gone beyond "reasonable elegance" to simply "elegance under any circumstance"….and that….sucks!

This is not the Job's Apple people loved, its now under the helm of Tim Cook and Jony Ive.
I could see them ditching the Lightning cable in the future and going with USB-C.
Or more likely No Ports whatsoever!

  • Officeworks is showing "click and collect" available in 2 days. Have you tried that option?

    • the gold and space grey models are available for click and collect but silver isnt even available.

  • So glad we bought a month ago as it is needed for child's schooling next year. There was probably a lot of people doing the same as us.

BTW we did a price match at JB, they simply looked up OW web page to see the price and didn't check availability.

Other option is buy a cellular one on a plan ie Optus - works out to be cheaper if you also requires internet connection.

On a $41 plan 128gb device is about $400 and internet is $600 for 5gb per month over 24 months orlower if u choose a lower data but higher device payment plan

  • I bought two at the end of last year and tried to purchase from my local Officeworks - they didn't have it in stock and said they had never had it in stock even though they are advertised as such through the website.

I ended up buying through Apple. It was an education order so it went through their business orders department, not just from our local seller so I guess they didn't have to wait on stock being made available to the store.

  • Be careful when buying from Dicksmith these days. It might not matter to you but now that they are basically Kogan, alot of their Apple products are imported from Hong Kong.

    • Apple are pretty good about warranty regardless of device origin. Outside of warranty there's no reason to be scared of the dreaded ~grey import~. They're all manufactured in the same prestigious sweatshop.

      • Australian local stock gets benefit of an additional year of warranty though, I think that's a massive difference (plus technically depending on the model, they can refuse to fix the device, though I guess that applies more to cellular models).

    • I've used my korean import ipad mini since 2013. I dropped it more than dozen of times and screen hasn't cracked (maybe i was lucky). I wasn't planning to pay for warranty anyway so I should be OK.

The only problem I'd have is the charger since I hate using adapters. Looked it up and found the ipad chargers are 30 bucks in apple store. The combined price is still cheaper than buying from apple store :)

      • I think they still come with Australian chargers, but it's just a generic one, not an Apple. But yeah you could just buy one separately.

Yeah Apple products are generally pretty good. Although I think in recent years I've had more problems than in the past. My iPhone 6 completely died 11 months in, and sadly the replacement they gave me is a refurbished one and the glass front doesn't quite click in to the casing properly so you feel it pop in out ever so slightly. There was also the time I came home from work, and when my phone connected to the wifi, my phone locked up for a second, then I found it had erased all my music (45GB worth). I'm skipping all future iPhones until they change the design again. I still have an iPhone 4 that is absolutely rock solid.
