Women Have Purses, What's The Equivalent Manly Bag?

This morning as I was leaving for work, I was wishing I had more than 2 hands.

I had the following things in my hand before leaving the house:

My Wallet, phone, Garage keys, Car Keys, House Keys, Sunglasses case(with sunglasses).

I was thinking of buying a fannypack (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Canvas-Mens-Travel-Waist-Bag-Fann…) - something like this.

Am I the only one with this issue ? How do most people get around it?

Pockets are too uncomfortable with so many keys.

  • It's called a purse :/

In America women have purses. In Australia they have handbags. A purse is for keeping money in and fits inside a handbag.

I manage the same items everyday:
    1. Belt clip for my work keys.
    2. Second belt clip for my house keys and car keys.
    3. Wallet in my back pocket.
    4. Mobile phone in my left side pocket.
    5. Whatever else goes in my right side pocket.

If you want to manage more try cargo pants.

"Women Have Purses, What's The Equivalent Manly Bag?"

Well, duh! Men walk around with a large bulge in their pants.

But you can't buy anything or open doors with those jewels…

well you can but that's for another thread.

A nutsack. It's one or the other.

I have an Alpine Club Switzerland shoulder bag (google for photo) which carries everything I want on a flight - noise cancelling headphones, passports, boarding pass, wallet, glasses, phone, pens etc plus any metal bits and pieces - coins, keys etc (instead of trying to find them all when going through x-ray machines etc). Lots of pockets and compartments but small enough to wear for whole flight and not get in the way.

I only carry my phone, car key and house key.

Pay for everything using my phone, licence/sunnies stay in my car, can get cash or wherever I am using my phone.

A backpack ,anything else is just not manly

  • Small Crumpler messenger bag

  • That bag i have it work ipad and all stuff i need went i am not in the car eg bus or train. https://www.fossil.com/au/en/products/mayfair-ns-city-bag-sk…

    • Oh man, this is so nice. $299.00 - I can't justify it yet unfortunately.

      • DFO outlet shop had them for $120 last year went i got it go take a look. i got $799 bag for 100 buck there for 13 macbook nicely

  • The European carry-all, of course. It's not a purse, it's European!!

Honestly, a canvas tote bag is fine and what I use. Depends on your personal sense of style, and I know that they are preferred by girls, but it's frankly stupid to assume that something as basic and simple could be called 'feminine'. It's practical and handy in my opinion, sling it over one shoulder and you have both hands free.

I do have a beard, and my dress style tends a little more young-person-hipster-trendy-artsy so it makes this a more logical choice. But if you have a simple looking plain white/black tote lying around just check yourself out in the mirror with it, it does no harm.

For additional points you could buy canvas wax and even waterproof it and stiffen it.

There's back to school sales all over. Plenty of backpacks to choose from.

    I carry a flight bag
    https://www.theiconic.com.au/wills-bag-374731.html

Fits: keys, panadol, shades with case, 20000 mAh xiomi power bank, wallet, lightning cable, hand towel, freshening wipes, bvlgari cologne 20ml, face moisturiser 10ml, bodylotion 15ml, chap stick, passport and docs, earphones, backup earphones. Eclipse mints, Extra chewys

Yes I'm a guy, but I travel non stop. Don't judge.

    • Someone above had a similar recommendation!

    • I've seen heaps of blokes who are commuting using these. Seems like a great idea.

Crumpler do good bags. Please don't buy the fanny pack.

I use a Swedish army gas mask holder from WW2. A bit of distinctive style though and certainly not to everyone's taste. https://www.etsy.com/listing/160431663/vintage-swedish-leath…

    It is indestructible.

i bought a small leather bag but big enough for putting keys, sunglasses, wallet, spare battery, phone ,earphone, pen and mini note, even a bottlebof water. When traveling its good to take passports and all documents of flight detail, hotel and rent car booking detail. it looks men’s bag not a handbag for women. its so handy and convenient. i recommand one to get merit point from your partner.

    • Do you have a link to where/what it is?

If you are carrying more with you it is a proof you are getting old. lol

    Waist leg bag, google it

These are not men's bags, this is a real bag, and I am sure Russell Coight would recommend it:

Genuine Kangaroo Leather Scrotum with drawstring.

    And for the Lady:

Dear boy, what on earth was your butler doing at the time? By George they can be so lazy at times.

  • I think a man can get away with carrying a hessian bag.

Plain or with a non-flowery print.

I'm quite partial to using a bindle

  • There has only ever been 1 mans bag and that is the Gladstone bag

  • A cross body bag- sort of like a laptop bag but not. https://www.bagworld.com.au/shop/detail/antler-bedarra-rfid-…

    What I'd do is:

    • My Wallet - right pocket
    • Phone - left pocket
    • Garage keys - Leave in car
    • Car Keys + House Keys - Reduce your keys you dont need & left pocket
    • Sunglasses case(with sunglasses) - Case in car, sunnies on your shirt or head
    • +1

You have your phone and keys in the same pocket? Aren't you worried it'll scratch your phone?

  • +1

Small backpack or briefcase are the most neutral options.

For only a few items, canvas tote bags are the best. Although seen as girly here, they're very commonly used among all students in Europe, able to carry groceries and beer, then easy to stash away in your jacket pocket when heading out.

  • Without a doubt, the most manly bag: http://www.saddlebackleather.com/indiana-gear-bag

I personally carry a small Tom Bihn backpack: https://www.tombihn.com/collections/backpacks/products/dayli…

  • I bought this about s year ago now and have loved it. I'm one of those guys that wears a backpack everywhere but when you need a pen or have a runny nose; I got you covered.

  • +2

What is wrong with a traditional backpack?

  • I love the "Shoulder Sling Chest Bag". So I would like you to take a look at some of these, the size depends on how many stuff you gonna carry with.
    sporty
    small
    normal size 1
    normal size2

Messenger bag or backpack. The end.

  • +3

My butler carries all my belongings

  • Wear a jacket with pockets, traditionally Men's clothes are tailored to be more practical whereas women's clothes are tailored to be more fashionable/flattering to there form hence little to no pockets

  • Most days I can get away with just my keys and wallet/phone on me. If I am leaving the house for longer I will take a side bag with phone charger, hand sanitiser, water bottle, sunglasses, pens, et. I don't get the femininity ridicule of man bags? They are fine to wear.

  • A bumbag…. are you a grampa?

I use something like this - fits a book & small knickknacks too: ebay stylish manbag

Looks stylish too & not uncomfortable. Normally I use one of these to & from work which even fits a small laptop & a book.

If you visit KL you can pick up a few for not a lot (and some with very different styles which is what I did)

  • if your an office worker, you could get away with a laptop style bag, otherwise you just need to find a female with a handbag and shove all your goods in there

    • Pretty much. Anything excess to phone and car key, straight into the gfs handbag.

  • For going out or on travel: Medium sized Black Leather Morrisey cross shoulder messenger bag. Big enough to squeeze my Asus 13" laptop in there, but still reasonably sized to take about. Got it for $20 from Big Buys. For work, use a Fossil Leather Messenger Bag to put my work Toshi 15" in.

    • Nah, a burberry trench. They have many pockets.

  • Some nice options from Tumi, keep any eye on ebay to pick them up cheaper;

    cross body; http://intl.tumi.com/c/bag/crossbodies

    and slings; http://intl.tumi.com/c/backpacks

  • Small Camelback. It's very casual only.

  • I'm confused as to why you think you need a bag instead of sorting out why you think you need to carry so much stuff.

You mentioned car keys and garage keys so I'm assuming you drive to work.

    1. 2 pockets: hold a small wallet (I ditch all my coins into my car console and use for random stuff) and a phone
    2. Car: Holds my garage remote (or keys) and my sunglasses, if you take your sunglasses in to work they should be able to sit on your desk without needing to be in their case, or wear them on your shirt
    3. Keys: I have 2 house keys and my car remote that I can put in my pocket or ditch on my desk.
  • I want this one, mainly for the mangled English on the front

    Use a small backpack.

People with fanny packs have a higher chance of getting stopped by the coppers on the street.

    • Small backpack definitely.
You can get them from Myer, outdoors shops, business-looking "laptop" bags, or whatever suits your style.

Unless you are metrosexual enough to pull off wearing a shoulder bag. But they are not very practical.

    • People with fanny packs have a higher chance of getting stopped by the coppers on the street.

DO people who sell weed /cocaine wear these ?

      • And Nike shoes, hat that looks like an upside down U from front on, basketball shorts and a polyester t-shirt.

        • This explains why someone asked me if i had a fiddy a few nights ago

What I'm hearing is, "Ozbargain, how can I fashionably add more clutter to my existing every day clutter?"

    1. Look at all your keys and sort them out. Keep the door keys and car keys and cull the rest.
Why take a garage key to work? Leave it in the car, which is frankly the only place it'll be used. Shed key, drawer key, window key, random padlock? Leave them in a utility drawer at home for when you need them.

    2. Get rid of coins and retailer cards and ensure that your wallet carries the bare essentials
If you're one of these people that keeps all 15 of their retailer rewards and membership cards in their wallet, you can simply download an app to scan them onto and present them in store. It's miles easier and declutters everything. After using this, you should be left with a drivers license, medicare/private health, credit/debit cards and maybe a work ID card.

    3. With around 6-9 cards and cash only, you can buy 100s of decent slim wallet for around 30 bucks

    4. Leave glasses case at home and perch sunglasses on head or in collar like everyone else.

    **If all else fails **
    1. If you can't compromise on too many keys, buy a carabiner. This isn't too daggy, sometimes jangles, but very comfortable as you never sit on your keys. My fellow Gen Ys are big on this.
    2. And/or Buy a canvas tote bag and look trendy

It's called a briefcase. Get some class!

  • +1

    a briefcase, like G-Man

  • Look for peak design. Their bags is pretty nice (but pricey)

    • Their fancy bags are for stylish photographers.

      • Not really. Their everyday series is pretty versatile. Great quality too.

  • There are very small bum bags that go onto the belt, like these:

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/Men-Women-Running-Travel-Waist-Bum-B…

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mens-Travel-Waist-Bag-Fanny-Pack-Bel…

Don't look as bad as the full bum bag …

  • A utility belt. Obviously.

  • +3

    Level: noob - bum bag
    Level: intermediate - briefcase
    Level: advanced - holster
    Level: batman - utility belt

  • backpack always

  • Since I got an app for my cards I only carry 5: licence, credit card x2, atm card, opal card.
They all now fit in my phone's wallet case.

Keys goes on a key organiser with car remote + pocket knife.

So I only have to take two things with me each morning.

  • Backpack or messenger bag, really simple.

  • Lonsdale satchel bag. Like every European

I had the same problem but I got around it. Here is what I would do
    - Garage key may associate with your car put in your car rather carry it around
    - Get one of those keyless with PIN door lock for your house so you dont have to carry the key
    - Get a wallet type mobile phone wallet case. Some can store up to three bank cards and some notes. Coins may not suitable.
    - Sunglasses case, keep it in the car if is is for driving. Consider transition lenses. I don't wear glasses so can't advise much.
    - Think about alternative key storages for example in the garage, trusted family lives nearby or in the car wherever you think secure. This is important in case you lose keys and you reduce number of unnecessary key that you carry around.
I like simple when travel I wish I can do everything mentioned above with just a smart watch.

  • I've got backpacks for work, never liked messenger bags going across your back (in how the strap is) so I just use the one strap shoulder bags and sling it across one shoulder diagonal across my side.

It isn't 'fashionable' but really, if people are worried that much about little things like that then it's going to be hard. I really don't think those square likee shoulder sling on bags or the like look terrible, and anyone giving another guy shit for it should get a reality check and stop being douches. I know there are people out there - to them just let them stick with their manly tank top, can't hold anything because they don't carry bags crap - same guys who ask me to chuck their spare drink bottle or shit in my shoulder bag yet won't carry their own bag as it looks unmanly.

  • a scrotum?

    • +3

      Mine is currently occupied

  • Closest thing I can think of is a messenger bag, but it might be a bit big if all you're carrying are the 5 items listed in your original post.

As another option, I got a wallet case for my phone so those 2 items are combined and I keep all my sets of keys on a single lanyard which has a D-clip on it so that if I don't need all my keys I can just unclip the set I need at the time.

  • Im surprised no one has said the manbags from Aussie Disposals! Ive been using these for 10+ years. A few firends also use them and I've see literally hundreds of other guys with them. Its like a secret club, you always give a nod when you see someone else with one. It comes in black and a gross yellow in two sizes. and best of all they are less than $10!! They usually last about 3 years (of literally daily use) before the stitching goes on the handle, but my mate has had one for 7 years now!

    • FYI, The things which are usually in mine are: laptop, phone battery pack, umbrella, loose change, mints, a USB stick or two, headphones and when the weather is being dumb I can also fit a hoodie in it (in Melbourne this is common obviously).

    Backpack

  • Google "men's shoulder bag".

I have one I from about 12 years ago. Still going strong and I take it everywhere with me.

  • +1

Thinking out of the square you could try:
    - a pistol holster on your shoulder, knee, belt to carry the smartphone. (used to be a fad during the first candybar mobile phones).
    - use a Carabiner (rock climbing shackle) as a key chain to clip onto the belt/holster.
    - carry a laptop bag.
    - carry a SLR camera bag.

  • a woman carrying your stuff in her handbag is the best solution to your problem.

  • I have a European carry all thing and I friggen love it. I originally bought it for my camera but decided it would work perfectly to & from work mostly for my cigarettes ( Hate squished ciggies). I carry my phone, keys, wallet, ciggies and lighter. I also carry deodorant and mints and if I ever need to take documents home I have a safe place for them. Mind you the luxury of all this extra storage comes at a cost, after all this is not Europe and carrying a man bag is not widely accepted and may induce some unwanted attention from co-workers depending on the demographic & maturity of your colleagues
