Sunbeam GR8210 Compact Café Grill, $29 ($45 RRP) at The Good Guys

950

Bought one of these about 6 months ago for $35 which at the time I thought was a great bargain for a quality grill / toasted sandwich maker. Heats up very quickly, grills evenly and the ribbed (for your foods pleasure) top plate gives a great texture to toasties, wraps or paninni's.

seems like a great deal….can you do sausages, chicken breasts, thin steaks, vegies etc? also anywhere for the fat/moisture to go?

    • I got one of these for Christmas. No drip tray, unfortunately.
But yeah you can totally cook sausages and stuff on it. My folks have the full sized version of this and they do it a couple of times a week. But theirs does have a drip tray.

One thing I really like doing with mine is wrapping up a fish fillet in some foil with lemon squeeze, olive oil and garlic (or what ever you like) and steaming it real quick inside these.

The juice stays inside the foil and can be poured over some rice afterwards.

I have had this one for 4 years and still going strong. It is on a slant so the fat drips away.

sandwich presses work too. $19 for the 2 slice and $29 for the 4 slice. but the kmart ones don't come with a grill. i have a 2 slicer from big w that has a grill like the op. it was the same price as the kmart one i think. can't check right now as big w website is down.

        • That sounds good. It is has a flat bottom plate, you could do things like frying eggs.

        • +1

          @squeeb:

oh this is true. the big w one has the grill on both sides unfortunately

        • +1

          @CVonC:
I like that you can vary the thickness on the BigW one. The KMart Heath Grill doesn't allow that so your food can get squashed. I get around it by wedging something hear resistant in the side.

  • Hi Franco, nowhere for drainage unfortunately but does everything else excellently.

    • oh …cool. like to grill / fry….could be a good way to cut down on some unnecessary fat from the diet ;)

You can use heaps of Viva paper towel with the money you will save :)

  • Is cleaning of this thing any pain? Certainly you can't wash the whole thing with detergent and water, right?

    • +1

Hi Kaikor, I just wait until it cools down a litlle (the time to eat a toasted sanga) and wipe with one sheet of Paper towel. After daily use for 6 months, no build up or stains.

    • +1

Mine is 3+yrs old and it's still easy to clean. I use a slightly damp paper towel and it gets the job done every time.

  • So this makes toasted sandwiches well enough?

    • Hi YellowKnight, yes definatly. I like the toasted sandwiches being flat one side and textured ribs on the other side. Wraps with the ribbed lines also looks attractive

Thanks OP but it's a wee bit small for me

I've been using the Kmart one for over 3 years. http://www.kmart.com.au/product/2-slice-sandwich-press/10639…
Only $19 and doesn't have that cheap plastic burning smell when you turn it on. Even after 3 years, nothing sticks to it.

    • I can attest to the Kmart one too. I only use it for hash browns and frozen stuffed parathas, but mine is also several years old and still going strong.

    • Yep, the Kmart appliances are actually pretty good. Bought the sunbeam vacuum sealer a month back and it was terrible and broke, swapped for the Kmart version that was half the price and couldn't be more happier.

      • I'm sure some of them can be good although my experience has been pretty bad:

-Kmart spice grinder, only lasted 1 year before the blade slips on the shaft and it can't really grind anything anymore
-Kmart toaster, although we still use it and it has lasted 5 years or so it has never toasted evenly

      • +1

For sous vide? If so, how is the vacuum sealer??

        • I've got it and it works great for sous vide. You'll need to buy the extra rolls too though.

        • @powerhammer:

Thanks, I'll have to go in to have a look.

I'm keen to do the big pieces of meat that take 2-3 days to cook, and the current ziplock bag solutions for short cooks all fall apart after 12hrs.

    • Drip tray?

      • Kmart Health Grill has a drip tray.

        • Is that one any good for toasted sandwiches and open tops?

        • +3

          @sav11:
It is wavy on both the top and the bottom. I don't use it for toasted sandwiches personally. Mostly chicken, meat and veges.

I have reheated frozen pizza in it by putting a spoon in the side so that it didn't close the whole way down and stick to the top (just to get the job done quickly and save heating up the oven).

    • +1

the big w one i have has the grill on top like the sunbeam one in op. same price as the kmart one i believe.

      • +1

actually it has the grill on both sides

  • +1

ALso note that it has 1 year replacement warranty.

Had one of these sunbeam cafe series flat toasters for about 5 years now. The surface still looks brand new and it still works great.

  • Damn it bought it for RRP a week ago from HN

    • +5

      Do you even ozbargain!?

      • Used my leftover HN giftcard. Thought HN was going broke, hence don't wanna be DSE giftcard victim

  • my cheap Kmart one doe the trick too!

  • +1

    Got one. Ready for pickup.

  • +1

Picked up one of these a few months back. Great deal at that price.

  • Have one, it's awesome.

  • we have one, it is good indeed and has been runnign for 2 years; i would recommend getting one with (a) a drip tray (b) wavy bottom instead of flat bottom, makes the food/snadwich look well charred. Something akin to george foreman grill would probably be worth the extra money.

  • +1

We have had ours for five years, used maybe 4x a week. It's a bargain at this price.

This one doesn't have a dial or slider to support the lid, if you don't like your sandwich squashed or want to make open sandwich, then you need to get something to prop up the lid.

I have been using this one for years, recently replaced it with one that comes with a dial.

  • Just a heads up… almost jumped on this automatically, then realised its a 2 toast space version, not 4.

Perfectly fine if that size is suitable for you, but no way that's big enough for my household.

    • +1

      Hence 'compact' I guess.

      • Yeah I know… but I saw the $45 'normal price' and almost got fooled.
(You can get the 4 toast one for that)

  • +1

If you use a sheet of baking paper around the sandwich it stops it making a mess too :)

  • Does anyone know if there are stainless version of these grills ?

  • Brilliant for those late night Jaffle snacks and also good as a doorstop too

  • -2

    nice toxic coating

    • -1

Toxic comment! No one is forcing you to buy. The rest of us reasonable people will make our own decisions thank you.

  • Long Bay CC is missing one of these. It's in an evidence lock up.

  • -2

Toxic Chinese Teflon coating unfortunately, better be careful these days

    • You did a lab test did you?

      • -1

        Yes

  • Looks like there isnt sufficient stock at my nearby TGG Store. Does Harvey Norman Pricematch this deal ?
    Cheers.

    • Spoke to local HN and they agreed to do a pricematch. Thanks OP & Ozbargain !!!

  • Pretty sure this is the one we have at work. Still going strong after 3 years of what I'd almost classify as 'commercial' use. People cook all sorts of crap on it at work! Eggs! Meat! Vegies! Sandwiches are the least of it!
