  • any one compared this to the Yi smart camera?

do these use the same app?

    • -3

You can find answer at here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/283018

      • +11

I suppose for a store representative that answer is at least slightly better than a lmgtfy link?

    • +2

From following the link provided by the rep, the answer to your second question is "yes".

Yes,It will work fine with the app Yi Home。
You can use app Mi Home for this item.

      • -2

        Thank you for your answer.n(≧▽≦)n

      • this camera is not listed under 'add new camera' in Yi Home.

      • +2

You can use app Mi Home for this item.

If I'm not mistaken, Mi Home is currently being used or exploited by the Mirai botnet.

(Bary, my response isn't aimed at you.)

        • All good. We are all in the same boat, just trying to find simple answers and some basic info.

I've not been able to really find out much about this camera so I'll be giving it a miss and waiting for some user reviews. I want to integrate with my own system so perhaps I'm asking too much from a $30 camera anyway.

          Viva la Ritek VR goggles!

        • Have you got a reference for it being used by a botnet? Can't find anything about it online

        • +3

          @Darkscythe:

Read once (and I can't find it anymore) about the association between the app Mi Home and Mirai.

Next, Mi Home is just ONE of the signs. As what all publications have been saying, the cause of the Mirai is the coding of the software. Nearly all the so-called Chinses-made IP-based surveillance camera are made by a handful of manufacturers. The cheaper they are, the more likely they all come from just one source (even though they come in different colors, shape, sizes, etc.).

The issue is that this single-source manufacturer has sourced the software to drive everything to one shonky site or company. Mirai doesn't just affect surveillance cameras. Any IP-based equipment that runs the same piece of poorly-coded software is open.

The so-called "manufacturer" of this camera may not know (or may not want to admit it) but, at the end of the day, their job is to sell things. To tell everyone "… and by the way, our cameras can be exploited by Mirai … " ain't doing themselves a favour.

The software, Mi Home, can be easily re-badged to something else. The camera can be re-packaged to become something else. At the end of the day, the code can be turned into a botnet in 98 seconds.

          @Darkscythe:

          OMfG!

I did a few checks and here it goes …

          1. Read this article about an IP Surveillance camera that got infected/injected with the Miria botnet app in under 98 seconds.
          2. Next, the product in question can be found HERE.

          So far so good?

Look at the Amazon page. Look at the name of the application required to run this hardware. It's called "XM Eye".

Now google for "XM Eye" and the first "hit" is the website called XM Eye. Now go to the website. Look at the logo found in the upper left-hand corner of the website. What do you see? "MY Eye". It's a play of words. It's the same software to "Mi Home".

        • @sanmigueelbeer:

So if we know there are security vulnerabilities with these devices, is there no way now that you could prevent it from happening? Or is this a hardware-level sort of issue that can't be changed?

I want to pick one of these up!

        • +1

          @Kugz:

          Kugz,

The author of the code needs to release a patch to fix the exploit/vulnerabilities.

For the buyer, he/she must do so much in monitoring and access-control list (ACL) in the modem/router that it ain't worth it. Anna-senpai, suspected to be the author of the Mirai, has released the source code (some say to get the authorities off his/her back or to buy time). It's a matter of time before a "version 2" (or higher) comes out.

I also forgot that there's another strain of Mirai called "Bashlight".

Feel free to pick one of them up, but for-the-love-of-G0d, please DO NOT connect the camera to the internet.

        • @sanmigueelbeer:

So if I purchased this and limited it's access to the internet, I wouldn't have anything to worry about?

        • +1

@sanmigueelbeer: Thanks for the detailed response. However, the Xiaomi Camera uses Mi Home (Xiaomi's smart home app". XMEye seems to be a completely different application.

That's not to say it can't be exploited, though I'd trust Xiaomi over effectively no-name brands of security cams (or other IoT devices).

  • can store video to network drive?

    • I havent found any information to confirm this, although alot of people seem to be having issues getting it to save locally to SD or to USB attached disks to routers.

  • +1

    Is this hard to setup?

  • Was looking for one of these at a good price, cheers.

  • 110° isn't exactly "super wide angle FOV"

Anybody got sample night vision videos?

    • For a single camera lens that's quite wide angle. 110' is basically 10mm fisheye lens territory.

  • +1

How's it work ? Like u need to provide it power ? Or has battery ? If so how long snit last ?

    • good question. what are the basics on what this does and how it works?

      • By the images. It needs bot power via micro connector and the also a USB connection. Thought it was wifi.

        • so power by microUSB.
connect to your home wifi network.
then access via the Mi app on your phone.

          is that about right?
is there a linux desktop app?
          how can you record?
what do most people use this for?

        • @matt-ozb:

For $28 u don't get much. More info would be good it's not like it's a USB charger with one way to use it.

So Gear best is unbanned ? How safe are these cameras ? In terms of hacking ?

    • +11

How safe are these cameras ? In terms of hacking ?

Just sent NSA a pm. Waiting for answer

    • change the default password and dont allow access from the internet and you should be sweet.

      • I'm just speaking generally here as I'm not familiar with the bot or the camera software but I dunno about that…Does the bot not try and connect out?

Disabling remote access means the camera won't be listening for incoming connections but if the bot, which is now on your LAN, tries to connect out then a NAT router, which we all use, is going to allow that roght on through.

I'd atleast block all outgoing connections on all ports from the camera's IP address but most consumer routers can't do that and only allow basic control of incoming connections, I.e; port forwarding.

If it does actually have this not installed then you'd be mad to get one to save a few $$$.

        • +1

It's kinda like Chromecast, you have to tell it the code.

You tell the app your SSID/code and you show the QR code to you camera

      • Changing the default password will not work because the root password, which is hard coded in plain text, cannot be changed and is being used by the Mirai & Bashlight exploit.

        • The more I hear…

    • +4

How safe are these cameras ? In terms of hacking ?

I'm not sure, but I'd point it away from yourself whilst visiting PornHub….. just to be safe.

      • +1

What if you find yourself on site from the camera?

        • +2

All well and good if your can monetise it……. Will help defray the initial purchase price of the camera.

    • +4

      In terms of hacking ?

If the software or app used to manage these thing is using the "Mi Home" then the software inside the camera is vulnerable to Mirai. (Membership to the Mirai botnet is guaranteed in 98 seconds!)

      • Have you got an link to Mi Home and Mirai botnet? app used is Mi Home (with a plugin) for this camera.

    Received in mail today.

Needs mihome. Cannot integrate with other systems. No exposed streams that I can network sniff.

Set up worked fine for Android but failed for iOS via QR code scanning.

Basically you put in the app your wifi and password which the camera should connect to and it generate a qr code. You reset the camera and it says something and you use the camera to scan the generated qr. It should then connect to wifi and camera accessible in mihome.

Lots of options in Chinese but I don't know what they are yet.

Video quality and night vision is excellent.

    • No English options? I might pass.

      • +1

Mihome is all in Chinese. I had to play around with it a fair bit before I got it working on my wifi. Had heaps of trouble on my iphkne but changed to an android phone and no problems there. There's heaps of options but I don't know what they are yet. They should be motion sensitivity, night vision toggles, saving, Whatever. Will ask someone who knows how to read Chinese later on. Checking stability now to decide if I wanna buy more.

Also in mihome, there two of these camera icons when you add the device. You need to pick the one with the least Chinese letters because one of them cannot connect to the internet

        • Don't they don't come with an English instruction manual?

If you've figured out then take a screen shot and translated into English, so the minority of members in here can benefit from it. I did thought about buying one for testing.

        • +4

FYI, The plugin to Mihome for this camera just got updated today and menu is 99% English now. Mi Home app is 99% english too.

    • Thanks for the information regarding lack of integration with other things. Appreciated.

      • Yeah.dissaplinted there as we. Would of liked it as an source for motion. Picture quality/exposure and wide angle is really good on these considering the $

  • i wona do my house might get like 6 or so of these or some of cams.

    • You should always buy one for testing first then order more if you're happy with it.

      • -1

  • need to buy insurance and registered? pretty reliable?

  • Can you monitor more than one camera on the same app?

  • +3

Disappointing to see Gearb*st getting a foothold back on OzBargain.

    • +3

Nobody is forcing you to buy stuff from them.

  • +6

I've tested this camera for a day. For the price, it is very good.

Very good quality day time video. Colours are a little saturated for my liking. Night time without the IR, you can't see anything. With IR it is only decent. This is a big contrast to the Yi Home camera where it has some magic night time processing where even without IR, it can rival my $200 hikvision in capturing light (quality is lower obviously).

App is only basic for the moment. You can't even specify time of day for motion capture. Automation is very poor also if you want to hook it up with the xiaomi gateway. Only option is to 'record to the cloud'. From my research for the moment you can't even delete it if it's uploaded. only access is through the app and no RTSP so far. Hopefully they add in the record to NAS in the future as they have tentatively promised. Note time is in china time too. Couldn't find any hacks for it yet. Software was all in Chinese yesterday but had an update today and 99% is in english now.

    • Thanks for the info. How does the record to the cloud work? Can you connect it to your Gdrive or Dropbox etc? Or do they give some ammount of space on some xiaomi cloud?

      • +1

the cloud is xiaofang's (brand of the camera) own cloud service. There is no option to choose anything else. The Yi camera does this as well. Issue is that it's very opaque and you have no idea how they use the data.

        • Ah that is weird haha. How much storage quota do you get?

        • @Gmetal: It doesn't say either. Basically it just let you download and view the footage.

  • Thanks OP. Bought one. Have older version 720p Ants … hopefully someone can root this one too so we can have rtsp stream.

  • OZ adapter?

    • I might be wrong, but don't think it comes with a power brick. It powered by micro USB.

      • You are correct. No power adapter in the package, only 1 micro USB cable

  • what do people use this for?

    • Serious question or trolling?

      • serious.
like watching a baby in a room?
or is it just a webcam?
        some sort of security device?

I was looking for an outdoor unit to keep an eye if my new fence is ever damaged by a car, then I can tack the numberplate.

        • get a hikvision
you wont get much detail with this camera, due to the focal length of the lens and distance
sure it might give you a good picture, pictures are USELESS without actual detail and focus of an area

        • Basically security from inside the house looking out

        • I am buying to place near my gatehouse. I don't want to replace my intercom. Also, I have a bogan in my street who likes to drink and drive his remote control car (which accelerates faster than a blink) and has marked my garage door.

I just asked because there was quite a lot written in the last post linked to and also in this thread. I bought one from Lightinthebox, mentioned at the bottom of the last post. I didn't upvote since the deal was from GB. I bought one to test its functionality and limitations before committing to more. Check out the Youtube link as it's helpful and there is lots of info in the last post too. From what I can see the main limitations are the app language, botnet fears and the lack of ability to record to a NAS or computer. I don't think you can schedule it to start recording at certain times either.

        • @Davo1111:

so I could put something like this in an upstairs window pointing down to my driveway gate about 10m away?

then hookup a network cable to run it into my router and into my linux PC?

        • @matt-ozb: I don't know its capability to record yet. My uses are more on-demand. Edit: realised you were asking Davo

  • +2

Have tried so many different ip cameras, best in my opinion are vimtag and hikvision, simple and professional as they are the major manufacture that mainly produce these type of things, not like xiaomi. Software wise, each have their own branded software which are much more professional. Lens wise are better quality and clear in either 720p and 1080p. But on the other hand, these xiaomi are cheap, does the job if that's what u want.

    • +1

can vimtag or hikvision write to a network drive or need their own nvr? any recommendations on which models to get and where from?

      • certain models can do this no worries
alternatively download blueiris and run a PC NVR
google is your friend in regards to models etc but I prefer the 4mp "turrets" they work well and are POE
also read up about "hikvision focal lenghts" this is VERY IMPORTANT to get the right camera for the right solution

      • Vimtag full range supports network drive, haven't tested on hikvision tho. You can find easily on ebay for both of them.

Got mine yesterday from the prior lightinthebox deal. Am very impressed for the price. Setup using mihome on iPad easy peasy. Quality is great both night and day. Works with a powerbank too. Most of the mihome advanced camera settings still in Chinese but there is a basic translation further down the page of lightintheboxs webpage http://www.lightinthebox.com/xiaomi-smart-ip-camera-1080p-wi…

    • Also the latest google app allows you to translate the text on any screen without leaving the app (in part or the whole screen) so its not too big a deal imo.

  • Thanks OP, grabbed 2.

  • If i used a third party security software such as ispyconnect http://www.ispyconnect.com/ is it still vulnerable to the botnet? I would think not?
