About to Make The Jump - New 55": Samsung 55" UA55KU6000WXXY ($986), LG 55UH615T ($995) or Sony KD55X7000D, Winner - Sony!

Hi All

I'm wanting to get a new tv this holiday, best I can get for < $1000 (screen size, picture quality and decent/reputable brand).
I have signed up for Amex offer (less $100 at Harvey Norman). Is there cash back on HN?

Can't choose between these two and would appreciate any advice/suggestions/alternatives from Ozbargain gurus out there.

Wanting decent quality, easy to use and as future proof as possible. Watch Netflix and some recorded content, and only live free to air tv if I can record & watch later and skip ads. Enjoy sport (decent refresh rate) and usual series (GOT/walking dead) so decent pq. Have chrome cast and PS3.

Samsung 55" UA55KU6000WXXY and
LG 55UH615T

Thanks Ozbargainers!

Update - Fixed the title and seems as if Sony KD55X7000D is strongly in the mix. $100 more at HN - but should be able to get them to price match Retravision.

Update 2 - HN refusing to do a price match on the Sony, and their price seems to have jumped back to $1395 :(. Retravision doesn't have any in stock.

Update 3 - Made the leap and went with the Sony. Got JB to price match retrovision ($998) as it seemed that HN didn't want to price match and didn't have any in stock, and were on backorder. Retravision are also on backorder now. Must say - looking in store the LG was very nice, screen looked good - but believe Sony was as good, if not better. Reached my goal of getting a good quality/named brand (hopefully) for under 1K that should last me > 5 years. Leaves me with the Amex deal to use up in the next couple of days, any suggestions?

End thanks ozbargain community, your response and assistance has been fantastic! Certainly left me more knowledgeable than most of the salespeople I spoke to. I may not have made the correct choice according to many people who offered their opinions, but I feel I have made more of an informed choice than before, and in my opinion - my best choice!

for me, lg because has more USB.
couldnt see the refresh rate Hz, i think bigger Hz is better so get at least 100hz tv.

damn so cheap i bought my 55 LG just FHD for $1600, 5 years ago. it has 3D and 200hz refresh rate

    • +1

I think the Harvey Norman specs are wrong. Pretty sure the LG has 1 usb and the Samsung has 2. Although from what I can see the Samsung is an 8 bit panel and the LG is 10 bit. So in theory the LG is going to be the better option.

      • Thank info re panel. Didn't see anything about this on product websites.

    • Thanks, yeah - can't believe the prices either! Current tv is a 40" bravia that I bought for about 3.5K almost 10 years ago. Quick check, both seem to be 100 hz and yes, it looks like you are correct with the usb. Lg => 1 usb2.0 and samsung => has 2.

    • +1

Can't compare this way. Had a 46 inch Sony bought in 2010 was 2.6k with that you can get 65 inch UHD what not on Sony or LG or Samsung with HDR these days.

I would like to upgrade but partner not allowing

      • Exactly in the same boat, my 46in Bravia failed on me a couple of months ago but was an easy DIY $100 fix (Mobo swapping) so hoping to milk this TV for another couple of years.

  • +14

LG are terrible with honouring their consumer guarantees. I had to follow up daily. ACCC recently took federal court action against LG for their failures on consumer guarantees also.

    • +4

Can vouch for this from firsthand experience…no more LG for me! :/

      • Thanks chumiee/StewBalls for the heads. Nothing worse…. Wouldn't Hardley normal be my first port of call?

        • +1

Mine was just outside of warranty and they came and inspected the TV and said they will fix it or replace it. Sweet I thought. Never heard back so had to follow up and they said they no longer carry the part I need so can't do anything. They backtracked on a new TV. After I escalated it eventually they found a part overseas and fixed it.

    • +1

You will get rotten service from them all. A while back had a massive nightmare with Panasonic and one of their tvs that replaced another of their failed tvs.. it had only done 20 hours and they gave me a hard time!!

    • +2

Don't get a LG. Agree with above. Just look at what they did to bootloop G4 owners and poor after sales service on TVs

    • +1

That's unfortunate. I had no (real) problems getting a panel replaced on a ~4yo 55" LG with only an initial "it's out of warranty" claim by LG customer service. Transfer to supervisor and they were out here in a few days with a replacement panel.

    • +2

Yes we can vouch for LG not honoring warranty either, won't touch them.

  • +4

Any smart TV just make sure they have plex built in. Don't worry if you have no idea what is plex just do it you will thank me later.

    • Know what plex is - neither mentions that it is built in. Would hope with both you could add apps - but never had a smart tv before…..

    • Any Samsung can download plex. Even my 2013 32". Plex is standard any apps are.

  • +4

Stay away from LG! Terrible customer service and a lot of their TV's ship with faults, they are also mostly IPS panels so the blacks aren't very good. 10-bit HDR is a must if you are interested in this feature.

    • See a pattern here with LG….. starting to sway me towards the samsung. 10-bit HDR, is this in regards to a pvr? Can I attach an external HD to either of these as a pvr? (no experience with smart tvs - had foxtel IQ and an external pvr before).

      • +3

HDR = High Dynamic Range. A new feature of the latest UHD TV's. You will have to experience it for yourself, many new Xbox One games like Forza Horizon 3 and Gears of War have this feature. Also in movies like The Revenant, shows like Marco Polo on Netflix etc. Basically it improves contrast/colour significantly, once you see it you will understand. Cheap TV's might have HDR but only 8-bit and nowhere near as good, probably not very noticeable at all.

I am sure you probably can attach an external HD as a PVR. But I also think that many of them have inbuilt recording capabilities. Not sure exactly how it works as we record using Foxtel.

To be honest I reccomend you increase the budget and just grab the 55" KS8000 which is going for less than $1500 right now. It has been ranked as one of the top LCD you can buy by Rtings for many months now amd has all the latest features, you will be satisfied for many years.

        • Thanks nubby for the def'n of HDR, something new for me! Don't tempt me with the KS8000, already feel guilty splurging 1K on a new tv :). Still, now I have to go and do a google on KS8000…..

    • +1

Not sure what you've been smoking
I have a 10bit HDR LG Panel and my blacks are PERFECTLY fine
LCD in general suffers from lessened Black compared to OLED / Plasma but thats a technology limitation

I bought a 55 inch LG and can tell you now the HDR and panel is bloody beautiful

      • +1

I second that! I have the same and it looks awesome!

        • Neg away clowns
Unless you've bought the tv you are VERY WRONG about the IPS screen
It works perfectly for me and got it for 985 :)

          Have fun

        • +1

@shawncro 222: Unfortunately you are always going to get some negative Nancy's that will always pick on something. No TV is perfect I guess. I got the 55UH770T; there are some negative reviews for it but TBH I love it! I am using it as a PC gaming monitor (An …overkill?? .. yes … but I can LOL) but no point forking out heaps for a 4K minuscule 30" monitor! You want to see and enjoy the extra pixels closely LOL.. Just Cause 3 @ 4096 x 2160p rocks! No lag, ghosting (on Game settings)

        • @vinni9284: Thanks guys for giving me an alternative view on the LG

        • +1

@joe22: The problem is the the more you research and look at reviews/feedback, the more it does your head in. You end up more confused than at the start LOL. I have overcome this due to speaking with several retailers and try to analyse on what brand comes back more for warranty repair. Do your research on specifications (I would opt for HDMI 2.0 & HDCP 2.2 and look into if a HDR 10 bit panel will suffice) I guess you have define what you will use the TV for, movies, gaming etc. Luckily for me though, I got to know some of the staff members @ HN over time as I have purchased goods from them plenty of times before. From their feedback, Samsung TV comes back more for repair than LG. Please research other sites as there are a few that say the same. I don't want to start a debating session as I'm sure that you get dud Samsungs and LG's; every brand TBH. Cheers

        • @shawncro 222: I bought it and returned it. Difference is night and day between UH770T and KS8000. DSE plagues the LG range and the screen looks washed out due to IPS.

        • @nubzy: Fair enough. TBH I am using it for a monitor so not plagued/bothered with the DSE (yet). At the time of purchase, the Samsung was $855 more hence a no brainer for me and not regretting it thus far. I saved spending $250 extra on their BS warranty extension. Therefore if this blows up after one year, I will fight for a fix via LG/ACL. If no win then use the $250 as a deposit for another rubbish flashy screen LOL :-)

        • @vinni9284: Yeah Vinni, it i a bit like that! Going around in circles, the moment I think my mind is made up someone comes up with some other comment. I guess the good things is that there is no clear winner/looser - so hopefully any choice will be ok! Slowly heading towards the Sony - but must go and have a better look at the models on the ship floor.

        • @nubzy: DSE?

        • @joe22: Here you go … more confusion for you! LOL https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/284384

        • @vinni9284: Thanks - was wondering what Dick Smith had to do with all of this!

        • @vinni9284: perhaps more samsung tvs are returned for repair because more are sold. In essence, the percentage of defects is more meaningful than the absolute number.

        • @Ryder: That can be a possibility however feedback are being attained by the sales people (frontline staff) themselves. I am sure they track the amount of sales for both brands over a period of time to make this conclusion. Samsung TVs (at the time of enquiry) are generally more expensive and can veer customers away to buy other brands (like me with he LG) hence possibly sell less.

  • LG's 2016 models have been getting rather bad reviews by RTings. See http://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/lg

    • +4

Thanks psyren89, sounding more like the Samsung….

  • +2

good talk about samsung/LG here (on a post with Sony 4K TVs that are super cheap at the moment). seems LG is the go and Samsungs new models are not reliable.
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/4306552/redir

    • Personally, if reliability is a factor then definitely LG over Samsung.

      • yep. thats what people were say over at the other post.

        • Personally, I'd go TCL or Hisense…at least they are still trying, not coasting on former glory…

        • +1

          @StewBalls:

Sounds like your own life-story. lol

    • +1

Interesting, 5 Samsungs returned for each LG :( Comments above mention customer service of LG is awful - wouldn't I just return the tv to the retailer if I had any issues (during warranty)? I am of the premise that if a machine lasts a year without any issues then it is not a lemmon and you should then get a decent life out of it?

      • +1

Samsung has had crap reliability for decades, back in the CRT days you couldn't touch them with a 10ft pole. LG was even worse. Things changed a lot with them catching up technologically, and even surpassing in that they both make panels now, however personally if you can find a good deal on a Sony or Panasonic in your budget then I would go for that instead. Sharp is also very underrated, however you may struggle finding them on sale as they don't sell many in Australia.

        • I have a Samsung LCD that is now 10 years old. It went out of warranty by over 3 months and Samsung still sent out a guy to put in new capacitors for free. Those baby's lasted another 7+ years. Still going fine, kinda wish it would die so I could upgrade!

        • @serpserpserp: of course there's always exceptions and some people have a good run, however even in your case it still needed a fix. On a side note about 5 or so years ago I did a small count of tvs that I walked past on council clean-ups, as panels started appearing rather than just CRTs and it piqued my interest. Practically all of the brand name ones were Samsung followed by LG a notable but distant second. Maybe this just reflects market share at the time but it's worth noting.

        • @Jackson:

I think Samsung did a great job 10 years ago being a Sony beater and then about 3 years later they were pumping out a lot of varieties and the quality was lower with more issues. I think Samsung was also the leading LCD seller at the time, so I think it does reflect market share from a long time ago. Lets face it, you don't see a lot of Sony's on the sidewalk, if you did people scoop up broken ones for parts anyway!

      • Our Samsung tv was fixed 4 times before they offered a replacement (pay more) or a refund. Took the refund but it took ages to go through.

  • +4

If you had an extra $100 I would choose Option C: http://www.harveynorman.com.au/sony-bravia-55-x7000d-series-…

    • +1

Thanks stormil, why would you recommend the Sony?

      • +2

Because I own that model and it is fantastic sound and picture quality, plus 4k! I have never been happier with a large spend purchase, and they are all on Sale at the moment.

        • Does it handle normal HD content and Netflix fine? Or does everything upscaled to 4k look a bit crap? I too am a person that watches everything in 1080p still.

Also is it Android TV that runs on it?

        • @serpserpserp: Yes it is Android, most Netflix shows upscale well, but the odd episode looks a bit crappy, i think it is the file compression and not the tv though. I also can yell at the tv to do what i want, like Netflix, Youtube, Ask a question to Google and stuff.

      • +2

Unless you're only using it for 4K stuff, most of what you will watch will be upscaled, so you want a TV that handles it well.

Sony's upscaling is awesome, I've yet to see better upscaling on a TV.

        • Thanks Stormil & Scab. This is what I have been concerned about - most of my content will be FTA, foxtel & Netflix. Seeing and comparing the panels in the shops I feel is a little bit defunct as I know that they are both showing best 4k stuff they can.

      • i was going to say look at sony too.
Harvey and jb have dropped the prices to match sonys sale.
7000 and 8000 are amazing prices atm.

      • Choose the Sony. It has deeper blacks than the samsung so is better for watching movies in a darker room. The samsung is better for lighter rooms because it has brighter whites. It also has better colour accuracy. The Android has more apps.

    • +5

Agreed Sony is the aay to go.
I recently got a Sony and my reasons for choosing them over lg/Samsung

      1) better quality panel, nicer colours
      2) android tv meaning can get more apps etc than others
      3) warranty. I used to work for service centre in Melbourne and can tell you Sony goes above and beyond when it comes to repairs.

You pay more for a Sony pretty much always but I find bravias are the best overall.

    • +1

no need of an extra $100

      • Thanks Jimmy - means I should be able to get HN to price match and that price is not a factor between the three in making a choice

  • +2

Dont buy anything LG, it stands for LOAD OF GARBAGE. Any thing I have ever purchased LG has stuffed up sooner or later. Bought one from Harvey Norman and they wouldnt honour warranty. I now have a 71 kg "wall" sitting in my dining room. Cant even push it down the stairs!!

    • +3

Did you ever contact LG themeselves or Fair Trading on Harvey Norman. Part of being OzB is knowing how to make them honour thier warranty, advertised price or price match policy. Nice guys finish last and all.

    • +1

I thought it stood for life's good?

      • +7

It actually stands for Lucky Goldstar…

      • +4

I think it's Lucky Goldstar, if anyone remebers Goldstar. Now I feel old…

Edit: beaten to it by Stewballs

        • Goldstar was crap, explains a lot.

    • +1

      LOUSY GARBAGE

  • +3

Samsung have started putting Advertisements on their smart tvs (in the menu I think)

    • +1

Not liking the sound of this!

      • +1

2017 will be the year of people learning to configure their routers - a for siteblocking and b for removing ads.

  • -1

I was in the same position 6 months ago when I moved into a new apartment.
Samsung and LG are both TV powerhouse, no matter what you read online, there will always be bad reviews.
It's all up to you to choose and make an informed decision.
My policy is not to buy anything other than Samsung or LG.

The most important factor for me is: lowest price + fulfilling my TV requirement (4K, response time, etc.)
And if you have the chance, go see both TV in action for yourself in-store (you can't beat real sound and real display by reading specs alone).
You are spending a lot of money, make some effort to see the TV that will stay with you for a long time.

I went ahead with Samsung because it was $5 cheaper and the remote control menu selection is slightly faster and it also has less steps to reduce the brightness!

Brightness is a big thing for me, I always use Movie mode (yellowing) and 0 brightness after sunset.

Also, compare other websites prices too!
TGG also sells the same products - $995 for each:
    https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/samsung-55-inches140cm-uhd-le…
    https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/lg-55-inches138cm-uhd-led-lcd…
On TGG, Samsung has reviews while LG doesnt.
And Samsung has lower price on HN, so there goes my decision.

  • +1

    I own this TV
    could not be happier
streams 4k netflix beautifully across the inbuilt wifi
    Foxtel iq3 looks good
6 Stage Upscaler makes things look great too
Happy with the constant software upgrades and improvements
No ads in the Menus like Samsung

Got it for 985 at Lutwyche QLD GG

    • Thanks shawncro

  • Hey Joe,
I had the same dilemma yesterday evening when I was at Harvey Norman. All online reviews apart,I asked the sales person to play the same UHD Content on both TV's and decided on Samsung.
Watched - Mission Impossible III on Channel 9 HD yesterday and was impressed.
And yes,Received email from Amex for the 100 Cr.

    S@m.

    • Thanks S@m - direction I am heading, and your confirmation helps….

  • +1

Damn tossing between something like this or the current 48 inch JVC Big W deal for ~$328..

To be honest I can't really see much difference besides the 7 inch factor and smart TV and maybe better upscaling but for triple the price..

What can someone help me out here?

    • +2

The actual display! Go see the actual TV in-store, it's like an avocado and a perfectly ripe avocado.
But if budget is a deciding factor, JVC is OK too.
My advice: just don't go see any Samsung/LG afterwards.
If you are satisfied with an OK avocado, it's fine.

      • +1

Haha goddamnit this like Samsung galaxy Tab z2 vs Nvidia shield tab all over again

  • Can't comment on Big W's JVC, BUT, make sure you test for "banding" on ANY new tv when you first fire it up at home. My recent experience (and reading) suggests that banding is apparently quite common in ALL panels these days - not brand specific. I recently tried out the 65" Polaroid tv from Big W. Vertical banding was just horrendous! Returned it the next day. Sure, it was a cheapee, BUT, my subsequent reading informed me that it's now a common fault that every new tv owner should check for immediately, in case an immediate return for refund/exchange is required. There are plenty of banding tests on Youtube etc

I have an LG TV 55" and still working after 10 years. Wife kept it on for hours everyday. I have a 65" LG upgrade in the lounge now 2014 model and moved the 55" into the game room. Bought a 40" LG 4K from dick smith good bye sale for $210, what a bargain. Have a LG fridge 10 years old, LG dishwasher 2 years old, LG microwave, LG blue ray $29 also dick smith, a LG washing machine and had a problem with that but they replaced it with a new one which is four years old now. The washing machine technically is 7 years old. Had LG surround system but wife said it ruined the aesthetics of the lounge, so sold it and it is still working after 10 years. LG all the way in my house.

    • Wow 40" 4K for $210 LOL!!! Now that is a bargain!

  • what's the tv guide menu system like? i believe the samsung ones are nicer to use.

e.g. my sony menu is really nice and easy to use. but the panasonic, you need to open all channels before the menu displays all shows.

    • Pana VT55 and I just hit the guide button and all the shows are there?

  • The Samsung TV is only 50Hz & the LG Is 100Hz if you care about that that is, also the LG Is HDR10 Where the Samsung Isn't, HDR10 Only comes in Samsung models from 8000W Up. I would go in store to view them

    • My TV actually died and was looking for one of thoses model. I pondered why the picture on the samsung wasn't as ''accurate'' as the LG while in store … Thanks for picking that up, I can't believe I got caught by their marketing naming motion rate and whatnot … ''I'll just have to return my unboxed samsung now (lucky I found your comment before unboxing)

  • +3

Samsung replaced my 5 year old out of warranty TV panel for free. They said as long as there is no physical damage they will change it for free. I was looking for cost of repairs vs buying new one when i called them but too happy with their service and offer.

    • +1

Nice! I'm leaning towards Samsung now.

    • +2

Same (4.5yrs old), except they didn't have any replacement plasma panels so they gave me a new 4k LED :) Super simple to deal with

  • +1

I chose LG. Was thinking that Samsung were better, but the more I researched the more I found the LG is superior.

  • +1

I bought a TV with Android TV and it is such a good interface. Only the likes of Sony, Sharp and philips have android TV at the moment. So out of your choices I would say get the Sony.

  • +1

I have the 6000 series Samsung and it is a great TV

The only downside for me is their own Tizen OS instead of Android OS.
Tizen OS is a bit poxy compared to Android IMO.

It doesn't bother me too much as I was planning on getting an Apple TV anyway, so I was really after a decent picture.

  • +1

Personally without researching any of it - I'd go with the Sony.
I use my bravia 46" purely for gaming/Netflix and it's never skipped a beat.

  • +1

    I got the 615 LG
    10bit HDR panel
    true 100hz
got it for 980 at the GG
    Price matched Video Pro

    Couldn't be happier
Has netflix built in and supports 4k streaming
    Fluid interface
    6 Step upscaler

I looked at Sony / Panasonic in store and went with the LG
    Best decision made

Low input lag, chroma 4:4:4 and an excellent TV

  • +1

I'm seeing that Sony TV (which is the better choice as long as you're okay with IPS and its drawbacks) for $1095 at Harvey Norman online. They always honour their online prices in store.

As for the IPS issue, it is noticeably worse. If you like watching TV in a dark room I would avoid it due to the bright blacks. IPS is great however for the standard living room where you have people seated at angles and with ambient light. The LG is IPS as well (and not a very good TV) so go the Samsung if deep blacks are important to you.

Here are the reviews for the two televisions. They are the North American versions but they are more or less the same. Details regarding inputs might be different but the picture quality is the same

    Sony: http://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/sony/x700d

    Samsung: http://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/samsung/ku6300

  • +1

    Samsung all the way.

If something goes wrong with it, they'll send you a new TV in a lot of cases (if they can't quickly repair it).
Happened to my 50inch tv after a pixel died. It was out of warranty and they still replaced it.

Samsung are just the better brand of the 3 IMO. I have a bravia too in the spare room and it's nice, but prefer Samsung.
