Buy Bunnings Gift Card with Westfield Gift Card

Recently bought some Westfield gift cards with my Amex and I need to get a few items from Bunnings, so was just wondering if anyone has managed to buy Bunnings gift card with Westfield gift card at Coles?

  • Should work. Use self serve and remember that you cannot split payment when there are giftcards in the transaction at Coles now, so make sure you have enough on the westfield card for the total amount.

Bunnings accept Westfield gift card (Red card). I've successfully use them at Bunnings a few times this week. Go through Bunnings self service to avoid questions, or if you have to go through manned checkout just cover the Westfield gift card as you swipe it through the EFTPOS terminal.

    • Are you referring to the standard Westfield Red card $2.95 not the XS card?

      • -1

No the red Westfield card can only be used at Westfield unless there's a Bunnings at Westfield.
The XS can be used eveywhere that accepts EFTPOS.
I've purchased bunnings gift cards at Coles using Coles/myers gift cards or the Westfield XS card.

        • +5

          Wrong.

The Red Westfield card ($2.95 fee) can be used anywhere EFTPOS is accepted (i.e. anywhere with a merchant payment terminal). Bunnings too. I've used them at 7-eleven and even my local dentist. No problems at all. Of course none of these are inside a Westfield. The Westfield Red card is a normal EFTPOS card.

The Westfield staff tell you it can't be used outside Westfield but they don't know their arse from their elbow. It's like when a Dan Murphy's staff member tells you their gift cards can only be used inside Dan Murphys (but everyone knows they are rebadged WISH cards).

In other words the underlying Westfield Red ($2.95) & Westfield XS ($4.95) are identical - just different branding/printing on the front and of course they can charge a higher fee to people on spinning this BS story.

Think about it… we know for a fact that the Westfield Red card is an EFTPOS card (as in it says it on the back of the card and instructs the user to swipe through the EFTPOS terminal, select "SAV" and put in the PIN)… how on earth could Westfield 'lock down' an EFTPOS card only to stores located inside a Westfield?

      • +1

Yes, the Westfield Red (2.95) gift card. It's not a 'gift card' at all - it's an EFTPOS card just like the Westfield XS ($4.95) card.

Honestly, don't bother with all this gift card swapping rubbish, go straight to Bunnings and use your Westfield Red ($2.95) card there. It works no problems. I've done it. Others have reported numerous times in the Amex deal page that it works in many places outside Westfield.

        • Interesting.
It must have changed, as a few years ago I was unable to use a Westfield red card at a Coles located inside Westfield.
The Westfield XS card has a nicer packaging so you can gift it as a present
So why are ppl buying the XS card then?

        • Awesome thanks. Will try it out. Would Coles Myer gift card works like an EFTPOS card?

        • @mmd: Yeah, never used to work. It used to be a traditional 'gift card that you hand to hand to the cashier. Don't know when it changed but now it's an EFTPOS card that you swipe through the terminal yourself and press "SAV". the cashier doesn't even need to know what the card is because they don't see it

I guess people are buying XS because of the B's that Westfield tell people. Clearly they want to pocket the extra $2.00 fee. Feed people some misinformation and you can make extra coin.

The Red cards come in a really nice box too. In fact same box as XS just red, not gold. When I bought 9 Westfield Red cards I had to fight with the concierge to NOT give me 9 boxes because I thought it was a waste, she said she had to give a box with every gift card as it was Westfield policy lol

          @Nois:

Would Coles Myer gift card works like an EFTPOS card?

Nah, Coles Myer is a traditional gift card. You need to hand it over to the cashier and they scan it through their system. It doesn't go through the EFTPOS terminal. It will only be accepted in the listed stores on the back of the card.

          @PBG: cool thanks

        • +1

@PBG: Thank you very much for the feedback of using the card anywhere. I used it at Big W and worked fine . Just swiped and entered the pin it didn't ask to select the saving account. Perfect !! Thanks again.

  • Did you go through self check out?

    • Nope just walk up to the front desk where you buy cigarettes. Your mileage may vary.
System will allow it, but yht states some staff will apply the 'you can't buy a gift card with another gift card' rule

just go to kmart at a westfield and buy a coles group gift card with your red westfield card then go to any coles and buy a bunnings gift card with your coles group gift card.

    • +2

What a hassle when you can just use it straight away! Why most do not believe in what PBG said above?

      • +1

Because alot of ppl (myself included from personal experiences) listened to the Westfield attendant in that the Red card can only be spent at Westfield.
We now know this isnt the case.

        • -1

Haha, the Westfield concierge also told me that even though I bought across ten Amex cards I would only get one $25 credit.

I guess they must pass on what head office tell them.

Why most do not believe in what PBG said above?

Could be neggers trying to keep the secret safe. Same thing happens in all the threads about Telstra cashback & Rebatr. I once received a PM from a user telling me to stop writing about it. Personally I am a utilitarian so I feel the community should benefit, not the individual.

The Red Westfield card ($2.95 fee) can be used anywhere EFTPOS is accepted and is NOT restricted to inside Westfield

        LOL take that neggers :)

        • +1

Ultimately the community does not benefit as once the abuse reaches a material level the company in question will take steps to close the loophole, sometimes this will mean the deal will be completely pulled as was the case with Telstra. Now you never see the $30 starter packs on special because a few greedy people were activating them just to extract the cash through google play. I'm sure Telstra were still making money selling them at $10 each if a person only used them for the calls/data.

Westfield could do a couple a things in this case. First off they could withdraw all discounting of the cards. They have already started doing this as they have been withdrawn from various discount gift card channels for a few months now. Next them may start locking them down so they don't work at various places.

The idea of discounting these cards is to get people into a Westfield shopping centre. At least then they are getting a certain amount back as I believe they collect a percentage of store revenue. The deal was excellent as it stood, there is such a large variety of stores inside Westfield that most people would have no trouble spending the value of the card/s.

@AngryCustomer: Is it OK for a select few to exploit the system but not OK for the whole community to do so? I would argue the greatest good for the greatest number of people.

Westfield have done a disservice to it's customers. Scavenging an extra $2 from each customer by misleading them (telling them that the Red cards can only be used inside a Westfield, which is factually wrong). Then on the other hand at some time in the past year they changed both Red & XS cards to be normal eftpos cards - presumably a money-saving strategy because 'locking down' Red cards to Westfield stores only was either too costly or to bothersome for many customers when Coles & Woolworths wouldn't accept them - previously this was the case. Westfield could have done the honourable thing and made just a single Westfield card with one standard activation fee. Nope, they made 2 cards (both identical underneath): one they lie and tell people can only be used inside Westfield and the other they make people pay extra for a perceived, but definitely not reality, extra benefit.

        • +1

@PBG: No one will benefit if there is wide exploitation of the system champ. More people would benefit if the system was used as intended as this would result in these cards being discounted more often. With you being a "utilitarian" and widely advocating the exploitation of these cards Westfield will have no choice but to either stop the discounting of these cards as they have already done in some places or restrict them to work only within a Westfield.

        • -1

@AngryCustomer: Westfield didn't discount the cards. They sold them at face value plus an activation fee.

Westfield will have no choice but to either stop the discounting of these cards as they have already done in some places or restrict them to work only within a Westfield

Great! That is the intended purpose of the XS card. They might actually come good on the BS that they are spinning to their customers. Then the customers would be getting the service they paid for. Not paying extra for nought.

        • +1

@PBG: They did discount them, via the amex deal. They used to discount the red cards all the time, but like Angry customer mentioned they haven't been available through any corporate rewards programs for awhile now. Must have been too many people abusing them. The amex deal was the first time I have seen them discounted for awhile now. I bet if they could have restricted the amex deal to the red cards they would have.

By the way the red cards are restricted to being used in a Westfield by the terms and conditions of the card. It's not as good a control as enforcing it through the system though and but they could pursue an individual over it. Must have been cheaper/easier for them. I think we will see the cards progressively locked down as has already been reported. The terms and conditions also state they can cancel a card.

          @JIMB0:

I couldn't find that in the terms you linked to. Care to actually read them and point out which clause you are referring to?

Must have been too many people abusing them.

Up until two days ago the only people abusing this knowledge was yourself and Angrycustomer. If the so-called discounting has already stopped then you only have yourselves to blame.

It's obvious that yourself and Angrycustomer have known this information for some time and are upset that your little secret is now public knowledge. Too bad, so sad.

        • @PBG:
You obviously didn't read point 1.

Gift cards may be used to purchase goods or services at participating retailers in Westfield shopping centres in Australia

I'd been getting them for a while through a corporate rewards program for a small discount and using them inside a Westfield as I do a lot my shopping there. A few months ago they stopped selling them. I was delighted to see them offered under the amex deal, but I fear that with you advocating the abuse of the cards we won't see them at a discount again, just like what happened with Telstra pre-paid.

        • @JIMB0: I read and re-read point 1 many times. Nowhere does it say that Westfield Red cards are restricted to being used in a Westfield.

  • I call bullshit! Just went to my local IGA and had it read "declined 51 - not authorized" didn't even give me the option to select "sav."
Felt like an absolute dick, had to cover myself with "oh sorry, I must have swiped the wrong card".
    Embarrassing.

    • -1

Feel free to call it how you see it. However it has been validated by many others on this thread if you read the last few pages.

EDIT: After a bit of research I discovered that "Declined 51" is the standard code for insufficient funds on every Australian bank's response code list. It also only happens after the account has been selected. Here is CBA's response codes as an example. If it was a restricted card you would have received error #36. Either you are telling porky's or it was user error.

      • I bought the Westfield red card which brought me back memories of the unsuccessful past.
I hesitated for a second and felt the shudders, but was convinced by what you and others said and bit the bullet!
I tried later on at the IGA and it worked a charm!
Thanks PBG, u saved myself another few dollars!!!

The XS gift box looks way nicer and is worth the extra if you plan to give it as a wedding/ birthday present.

Absolute pleasure. Thanks for confirming it works at IGA too, CheapCnut is not going to be impressed though :)

          @PBG:
Not all, lol. I wentthrough self checkout and there were two paying options (Credit card or eftpos) where choosing credit card might cause an issue
