Buddy Tag (RRP$59.99) is a modern child safety wristband. It helps preventing lost child and accidental drowning. My Buddy Tag uses Bluetooth and is not a GPS tracker.

  This sort of thing can be OK with your keys, but useless for kids, pets or anything else that moves.

  For keys, your phone remembers the last seen location (you don't want it alarming every time you lose BT connection),
  so you can go back there when lost, and wander around attempting to restore connection so the keytag can beep at you.
  (it knows where the phone GPS was when it went out of range, so are the keys at home, in car, office, etc)

  I can't see bluetooth working from the bottom of a pool. Maybe it released a floating emergency beacon when wet?

  Hi Manic, this is different from the traditional anti loss device. It uses your smart phone. If the child is out of range or drowning, you will get an notification/alarm on your phone. You can set the range from your smart phone and you will get a notification/alarm if the device is submerged in water more than approx 5 second.

    You've obviously not tried using one of these.
    It will be constantly alarming. And if its real, what do you do? Which way did they go? Its easier to yell for them than to try to re-establish Bluetooth. Its worse than useless because of the false sense of security.

  These Bluetooth locator sounds good in theory, but useless in real life: it only works some of the time, and give false alert etc . I have a few of these gathering dust somewhere ( not this particular device , but ones similar)

  If you need one of such devices you need to step up your awareness where your children are and what they are doing. It just sounds awful that someone would trust kit like this over the traditional hey let's keep an eye/ear out on the kids ok. Bluetooth, 9m without obstacles, yeah I can totally see how this is going to work.

  Has sustained exposure to Bluetooth radiation for young children been demonstrated to be safe? For us grown ups, the odds are that some other disease or old age will get us first. however, and I may be wrong/confused, but I remember reading that young children shouldn't be exposed to mobile phones, Bluetooth etc on a sustained basis if it can be helped.

    You are. Sunlight is a billion times more dangerous. Bluetooth is extremely low energy and non-ionising.
    Holding a phone to your head during a call - no evidence for harm, but it is possibly a small risk. Not bluetooth. Not wifi.

    You need to install a tracking app on his phone.

    Same for kids - a small android phone hung around their necks or strapped on somewhere.
    Between the GPS and the mobile data (or even via SMS), you can actually track them once they go out of bluetooth range.

      Will have to consider insertable waterproof device, as he manages to lose his phone and wallet far too often for an adult.
