Winemarket is having a pretty good special on Penfold's midrange Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet 2008 at $8.99 a bottle ($107.88) with free delivery Australia wide. They reckon the RRP is $21 but I regularly see it sitting around $15 in bottleshops.
Even so this is a good deal for one of the nicest reds you'll see at the $9 price point. Cheapest I can see online from a quick search is about $13 without delivery.
Since I found Winemarket on OzBargain I've used them to buy about five dozen bottles of wine. They always deliver on time and give you what they advertise, so I recommend them especially as their prices are great - they specialise in cancelled export orders and so forth.
Seems to be a fairly average mid to high 80's scoring wine. Wouldn't bother normally, but the price isn't too bad if I were after a cheap dozen to give out as presents or something :D
"For wine, the ‘08 release of this makes a very good base for steak sauce. As a wine, it’s not very good. I thought Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet had turned a bit of a corner with ‘06 and ‘07 releases - they aren’t bad. This seems almost too plump and overtly fruity, at least at release, and with every winemaking trick seemingly used to make it as lifeless as possible (do Penfolds use MOx?). It almost tastes of Ribena. Nose is that famous “cheap wine” smell, whatever that is. Not very red wine like at all.
Not knowing what to do with the rest of the bottle, because I simply couldn’t drink it with any enjoyable at a normal temperature, I chilled it a bit and drank it like one of those sweet Brown Brothers Syrah"
