AmEx best budget card?

Hi,

I've been seeing all these amex deals and I'd like to join the party.

Is there any debit cards that will allow me to do this? Or what is the best value least requirements card?

Thanks!

Amex Australia don't do debit cards, only credit cards.

Their Qantas one has a min. income of 35k.

    Essential CC has 40k.

Have a look at the general Credit Card guide first: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/credit_card_guide

Then if you are interested in an Amex apply using a referral for bonus points: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/american_express_referrals
Note that there are 3 free Amex's: Qantas Discovery, Essential, and Velocity Escape.

Thanks the replies, I guess for a student it would be hard to get any of them

    • If you have an income & it is close to min, apply and see. I'm not saying to put down false information but I have never been asked to provide any proof of income (I do meet their requirements though)

      • Each time I apply for a CC, I am asked to send payslips. Can't remember Amex tho

    • If you're a student and have a casual job there's no point in applying. They would more or less give you a card if you're working PT/FT and have had that job for at least 3 months (obviously considering min card income)

      • If you've had the same casual job for long enough, they'll give it to you. I got an Amex based on casual employment (and earning over the min annual income). I never asked Amex how long they expect you to be in the same casual job but for a different card (from Teachers Mutual Bank) I was told min 6 months in a permanent job or 12 months casual.

    • If anyone in your family is eligible and happy to get you in as "additional cardholder" then that might be the way to go…just sayin…

    • Bear in mind that AMEX have recently favourably updated income requirements for many of their cards by amending the reported minimum income requirement to gross (pre-tax) 'household income' as opposed to 'individual income', making it much easier for students living at home and couples on lower incomes to apply. For the AMEX Explorer card, (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/262944) for example, you simply need to be able to report a household income of $65,000 per annum or above.

  • I've got a credit card from when i was working (28 deg) and always paid my debts but I think your right, It would be hard to get as a student and It may look bad in the future being declined or so I've heard.

    • If you think you meet the requirement but are not sure if they'll be convinced, the best time to apply is just after you've done your tax return. That way you can send them a single document as proof of income. (When they calculate your annual income from paystubs they take the worst case scenario and base it on the lowest paid fortnight, which can hurt people whose income fluctuates.)

  • Merged from Best Fee Free/Low Fee Amex Cards?

    Hi guys,

I'm looking at getting an Amex card soon so I can start getting in on those great cashbacks/statement credits, such as the recent Harvey norman $100. I currently have a Coles Reward Mastercard, through which most of my expenditure goes through, for the 1% discount. I'm not a heavy spender, and while I do travel, I prefer to redeem points for cashback/gift cards instead.

    • I'm looking at the Amex Essentials right now, and I like that it has extended warranty, purchase protection and refund protection. About the extended warranty, does that mean that any phone bought locally would have 3 years warranty - 2 years from manufacturer and 1 year additional through Amex?

    • I've looked at the Amex Platinum Edge, but I don't need the free flight & that annual fee is too much.

Are there any other cards I should be considering?

    • Under Buyer’s Advantage, manufacturer’s warranty will be extended by up to 12 months with no excess. Therefore, correct, if the phone you are buying has 2 years warranty, then it extends it another year to 3 years. With this, as with the Smartphone Screen Insurance, it is worth noting that if you cancel the Amex card account, the cover terminates. Being free, the Essential card has the advantage you can keep it ongoing for the covers. I posted about this card here.

To consider a broader range of cards, before narrowing, have a look at my Amex comment here. Hope this helps.

  • At risk of dredging up this old forum topic but I am tired of seeing all these AmEx deals cluttering the Ozbargain feed.

I would hazard a guess and speculate a minority of users have access to AmEx, I know posting AmEx deal after AmEx deal isn't against OzB guidelines but personally I would prefer these 'deals' shuffled away to a forum topic for those with AmEx cards (or who are interested in AmEx deals).

It also makes me feel like I'm missing out because I don't have (or have access to) an AmEx card and sometimes it feels OzBargain is advertising AmEx with the amount of AmEx deals posted… I know it's my issue and maybe I should find a plugin so all AmEx deals are automatically removed from my Ozbargain feed.

"There are plenty of eBay/Target/JB-HiFi/Coles/Woolworths etc. etc. deals posted but it isn't to shamelessly advertise - there are legit bargains to be had!"

I'm not against bargains (after all this is OzBargain!) but there is generally no barriers to entry (apart from Costco) through purchasing through a particular merchant/retailer, AmEx deals are only available to AmEx account/card-holders which makes me sad :(

You can hide all Amex deals at the bottom of each deal (underneath Reminder)
