      • Bit steep

        • Would anywhere price match? Officeworks?

    Only 1 year warranty

  • Amazon has deals on this drive frequently. Just got the 8GB version on the last Amazon deal.

I think you are talking about the 8TB one.

    • Yeh I took too long to mull over the 8TB one and now it's back up over US$200.
Hopefully it will drop again after Christmas.

I comment this every time a Seagate deal comes up but I figure its better for people to be aware.

I had two Seagate hard drives in succession that would only connect to my computer if the cord was constantly held at exactly the right angle while in use. These were both 1TB portable hard drives, so not the same model but both failed within a few months.

I would not recommend Seagate to anyone, especially anyone looking to store important personal or business data - even more likely with this drive I'm assuming.

By comparison, my new WD hard drive has been working perfectly for the last 6+ months. The price difference between the brands is worth it in my opinion.

      Cool story bro'
A whole two drives out of the four, maybe five, that Seagate makes each year! Shocking.

Should we ignore the fact that Seagate owns WD, and Samsung drives, for that matter?

      • "Should we ignore the fact that Seagate owns WD"…………..yeah, I think we should.

      • Alrighty, a few things. I doubt I would have bought the only two Seagate hard drives that failed that year. Also, when I mentioned the issue on OzBargain in the past several people had encountered similar issues with Seagate. Lastly, Seagate don't own WD…

Sorry to annoy, just relaying my experience which was echoed by a number of other people with similar problems.

        • The way you explain the issue points to the connectors on the cables you used.

If it is a connector tolerance issue, I think Seagate would adhere to the standard more often than various cable manufacturers.

The SATA and USB connectors are terribly incompetent. I really don't know how either became a standard, due to the week mechanical design for good conductivity. 10+ years ago I would often find a SATA cable with intermittent conductivity, governed by the mechanical stresses put on the junction.

With USB, I have noticed the issue mainly occurs with extension cables. I think, disregarding the inherent varying efficiency of the various conductors used in manufacture, the introduction of the extra two connectors and associated degradation via the junctions, highlights the issue. Whereas when simply plugging a mouse in the tolerance is not crossed.

P.S. The cable manufacturers have to deal with the physical stresses of the plastic/design to allow for the mechanical movement, as the connector is inserted, and then account for this with appropriate material and reinforcing.

Non of my Seagate HDDs ever failed. The oldest one I have is 10 years old and still in excellent condition.

      • That's good to hear, I have just mentioned this issue on OzBargain in the past and several other people have encountered similar issues.

    • That article was posted on April 1st.

      • OK, bugger - you win!
        Thanks :-)

  • Anyone got deals on higher capacity drives, already have 4x4tb and need like 4x6tb or 8tb or 10tb….
