  • Hopefully they don't change the price! Exeltek had it listed for $485 on pre-order. It's $529 now.

    • It does seem unusually cheap compared to competitors

    • Price now showing as $469 :(

  • Hmm. That is an expensive watch still. $597 normal price at HN.

That is $100 more than the RRP of Gear S2. WTF.

Will the Gear S4 be $697?

$455 is a big saving over RRP, but it's still incredibly expensive.

Be fair, the price is more in line with Gear S2 Classic which these are more in line with.
Gear S2 Classic's RRP was $598.99, at least that's the price they are still showing on Samsung website (at least without the promotion they seem to be running). So I don't think they'd increase RRP for next model or something simliar.

I do agree that the price is steep though. Plus, we are getting screwed over with the pricing compared to other countries I found (more specifically, Korea, with $450~$460 AUD as RRP).

Don't forget the higher cost of wages and rent here.

(more specifically, Korea, with $450~$460 AUD as RRP).

        Does that include their VAT?
US RRP is US$349.99, and nearly all states charge sales tax (only 5 don't), which means the official price is closer to US$379 depending on the state. That's about AUD$519.

        • Yeah, including GST, all the pricing in Korea includes GST (at least as far as I know). Be fair, South Korea gets fairly decent pricing from Samsung with a lot of stuff + I do get the feeling that South Korea is considered to be a special market for Samsung, so it's kind of not unheard of practice from other companies as well (Kinda like how US gets best pricing for a lot of things).

Eh, regional pricing is not an uncommon practice. It's annoying and stupid though.

Why don't we do an assets test when buying items? If Bill Gates wants to buy a Big Mac, he gets charged $2000 for it because he's richer than the rest of us. Still chump change to him.

        • @lostn: Why don't you just buy what you can afford? I'd love to buy a Sony A6500 but I can't afford it. Instead of complaining that it's so damn expensive, I just … won't buy it. I'm not going to die without it. Has Samsung gotten to you so badly that you simply have to buy whatever they make?

      • Be fair, the price is more in line with Gear S2 Classic which these are more in line with.

        1. What makes this watch classicy? The only appreciable difference between the classic and non-classic S2 is that non-classic had a plastic band, classic had a leather band. Here's the page for Frontier. What I see are plastic bands and leather bands with a choice. You could select a plastic band and not get a discount for it even though it's worth $100 less according to Samsung's pricing for S2. So what gives it the classic premium?

        2. Why didn't they release a non-classic S3 (whatever that looks like)? Or at least charge a non-classic price for the plastic band version?

$600 for a watch that will be obsolete in a year and thanks to daily charge cycles, the battery won't last you more than 2 years if you wanted to keep it. Sure it will still work, but the battery probably won't get you through the day anymore. Planned obsolescence.

        • I don't know, why don't you ask them?

The point I was raising was simple, they have released two models before and unlike what you were suggesting (with completely ignoring a more expensive model and suggesting similiar price increase in next model), the price increase is not something out of thin air. That is, they had previous model with same RRP. I've mentioned this to you before on other comment from long time ago which you must've ignored completely.

I don't know about their pricing. They may have thought that they would get profit from accessories instead for the sports model. Who the (profanity) knows is my answer. My best guess is that they, while increasing price for the newer model, realised that the cost increased significantly (it's physcially bigger with more material, Samsung developed a new chip for it that's based on more efficient finFET unlike Qualcomm who've just modified Snapdragon 400 again).

As with planned obsolescence, why don't you take the damn device and get the battery replaced? Before you whinge about how expensive it is and blah, for my Galaxy S6, they charged me $40 bucks (I got that done when I cracked the screen). Actually, better yet, could you tell me any smart watches that allow you to change battery? I'd love to hear about those.

        • @lostn:
OK, don't buy it then. Not everything is made for you. This isn't the first time you've complained about the price of the Gear S3. Some people really don't care that it's $465 or $479 or $600, just like how many, many people don't care that an S7 is $1100 or an iPhone 7 Plus 256GB is $1,569, or a BMW is $100,000.

People might say that the S7 is absolutely stupid because it costs 2x more than a OnePlus 3T. But people who value the high-quality camera on the S7, along with the excellent, accurate Super AMOLED screen and micro SD slot might say the extra money is absolutely worth it.

Not everything is made for everyone. Clearly the Gear S3 isn't being marketed to buyers like you, so you really should just ignore it and pretend it doesn't exist. No need to get so worked up about it.

Why didn't they release a non-classic S3 (whatever that looks like)?

Because the S3 does not replace the S2. The Gear S3 is being sold alongside the Gear S2.

    • They need to make up lost Note 7 profits somewhere :p

Local stock and local Samsung warranty guys?

  • It's CPL no more needs to be said.

  • I'm not sure how they'll be able to supply at that price. But it's CPL and they're the worst!

I tried to get price match of $529 (Exeltek) at Samsung Melbourne Central, and was told as it wasn't a direct competitor and no current competitor (JB, HN) had stock they don't need to price match. HN had it for $597 …

  • Fantastic watch. Picked mine up from HN with $100 Amex cashback. Totals $497.

Yes it's $40 more expensive but guaranteed local stock and from trusted big chain store. There is no CPL in QLD so I'd have to pay delivery to get it up here as well.

  • Maybe it's grey import with store warranty only.

  • What does this thing do that the old one didn't and that the one before didn't? Smart watches aren't very smart yet are they?

  • Price just bumped up to 469

  • Price increased to 479 now..

BTW, couple of other stores/sellers have this for 499 (including shipping) and they are aussie stock aswell.

BUT Why does JBHIFI and HarveyNorman still having this product priced at "599"… No idea…!!!!

    • B&H had it for 299 USD, but now has gone up to 349 USD as well.

479 still does not look too bad.
