Kenwood CMOS-130 Rear View Camera $59 (RRP $149) @ JB Hi-Fi

80

I just picked one of these up to fit my new head unit

I can run 2 cameras, but the CMOS-320 is still a bit expensive for me ($200 plus). Once it comes down in price a bit I'll pick one of those up and this can become forward or trailer camera.

  • Does it work with any head unit?
    Benefit over eBay/Jaycar units etc?

    • +3

I too would like to know the benefits, i have a $15 one installed that i got from aliexpress over a year ago, works great, clear picture both day and night and very accurate with the guidelines

        Link?

        • mine is specifically made to fit in a commodores license plate light socket, so if you dont theres not much point linking it :P
heres their store though they have a bunch made to fit specific cars

        • he either got a supra or 2jz in a commodore.

    • I had an alpine one a while ago - no real benefits in getting brand name. Just a nicer enclosure than the ebay/aliexpress ones. Most of them have an RCA cable output so it's quite universal.

Most people will say that low light performance and how wide the lens is - plays an important role. if Shaper above says he is happy with the image quality - I would probably just buy a $15.00 one..

Ill take a picture now and when its dark showing the quality and upload them tonight.
Have seen some reverse cameras (mainly the real small ones) from aliexpress that have terrible quality though

        • Thanks mate, looking forward to the photos.

    • Does it work with any head unit?

Anything with a composite in I would imagine.

  • Around $10 delivered for similar on ebay.

I have a Rav4 2012 and really want to get a reverse camera. Problem is the head unit is stock - no video. Should I upgrade the headunit or get one of those ones that works out of the rear view mirror (always look small and blurry to me..)
If the head unit, any good value options?

    • Does it already have a good GPS navigator?

      • It won't have nav, cjb said

        no video

        • Not all nav displays have video-in capability.
I would suggest getting a standalone GPS nav device with video-in for reverse camera.

    • Sounds like you have a CV with the double big knob Bluetooth head unit. Forget the rear mirror screen jobs, they're just too small. You have a few different options, what's your budget?

      • Don't really know what to expect to pay. Yes, the stereo is a no screen jobbie and I just use phone for gps. Don't really have a need to replace the head unit buy assume it would be the best/only route to getting a rear view camera…?

        • Are you up to the challenge of fitting yourself? If you want to stick with factory, source a Display Audio unit on eBay/Gummie/wreckers from a 30 series RAV4 similar to your shape, 90 series Yaris or 150 series Corolla. These vehicles utilise amber illumination, and the head unit will have the matching illumination colour to suit your RAV4. Keep in mind these head units weren't released until about mid 2011. Here's an example of what the DA unit looks like, but it has green illumination. They can be had as cheap as about $200.

It will plug and play into your RAV4, but you may need a harness from Toyota parts for the reverse signal (about $15). To plug the aftermarket camera in, you'll need one of these. Camera needs to powered from accessories for this to work properly with the factory head unit.

Or, another option is to fit a decent aftermarket head unit, like a Kenwood. Once again, all depends on budget…

  • Cheaper than cost (well, depends on what JB buy them for…)

edit: wish I'd posted all these comments into one post, lol.

  • I have the same question as cjb. Should I upgrade to double din screen with camera input in my 2005 crv, or is there another option like rear view mirror or separate screen? What would be best with moderate budget. Thanks.

Installation costs will be a big factor to consider if you don't want to do it yourself.

I just had a mate install a reverse camera for me. Total cost 140$ (100 to mate and 40 for unit). The monitor is a separate unit which you stick onto the dash.

I considered an android double din (joying). Aliexpress has them for 270 delivered sometimes however I would've needed a fascia (80$) plus install costs of 100$ plus a camera of 15$. It really adds up.
