Right now, 74 other people are looking at this flight…..

go to bed; the flights are mine

    • you have to wonder when Junkstar is doing $55 one way fares Sydney to Brisbane in school holidays from January 11 onwards, what are Tiger going to do & how many airlines are going to close down around the world in 2017.

      • Tiger just undercut Junkstar by $6 on SYD-BNE, same or similar dates.

For those of you who planned to book flight to Bali, you need to book the return flight i.e Bali-Mel separately because of Jetstar fare arbitrage which is in your advantage for flight from Bali to Melb that is NOT part of the return leg as discovered by devpods here
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/280957

    • So tempting

    • Conversely, don't book Christchurch to Sydney separately or you'll be throwing away over $40.

      • New Zealand is cheaper to book as part of return flight. Poor Kiwis got charged more for the same flight.

        • that's because of our departure tax which was $55 & is or about to go up to $60/adult + other very dodgy taxes, like security charges. What a joke.

        • @reggae: No it's not… Everyone pays the exact same departure taxes.

        • @callum9999: to clarify ……….. you misread ………….

I believe the departure taxes & other dodgy taxes & charges are less ex NZ, than ex OZ.

Kids under 12 years don't pay OZ departure tax, but do pay some of the other very dodgy taxes.

        • @reggae: No you misread! New Zealand apparently being cheaper to book as a return is purely down to Jetstar pricing.

        • @callum9999: nah. Taxes are lower out of nz

        • @reggae: A completely irrelevant point. I suggest you read it for a third time!

To clarify, the taxes on a NZ-OZ return are exactly the same as an OZ-NZ return. While your point may be accurate, you're taking the same flights in each scenario (just in a different order) so it has no bearing on the price.

        • @callum9999: no you have it wrong.

Often the return fare is less than the one way oz/nz fare doubled !!!

        • @reggae: I feel like I'm talking to a brick wall… I not going to tell you again, you can either accept it or remain being wrong!

The claim was NOT that flights are cheaper NZ-OZ than OZ-NZ (I have no idea if that's true but as the taxes are higher from Oz, like you say, I don't doubt it). The claim was that a RETURN flight from Oz is cheaper than the sum of the two one way flights. That has NOTHING to do with taxes as they are exactly the same in both scenarios!

    • What's the saving? Would suck if the flight home sold out and you had to get a full-price qantas flight instead! I guess using two devices simultaneously with separate accounts could help.

  • Thanks for posting this deal. Saved me $50 on a flight from Perth to Adelaide.

This is what I hate about budget airlines, cost shows at $130 and by the time you get to the end of the checkout it magically becomes $350 without meals. I'll stick to premium airlines, thanks!

    Queue the -ve votes.

      Queue the -ve votes.

LOL. Exaggerations seem to do that dont they!!! either that or you need new glasses or a better calculator

BTW I left your comment alone as it would hide mine if I didn't

      • +2

both are correct. $350 from $130 is too much, but it is true that budget airline can be on par or more than premium airlines sometimes on checked out.

I just booked a Qantas flight from Melb to Syd for 3-Feb, price is identical at $110 to Jetstar with a 20min difference in departure time. Def worth comparing prices before taking a leap.

          @KayDat:

You sir missed out on Jetstar price beat 10% discount

        • +14

@dealman: Okay, to clarify QF listed at $110 and JQ came up at $109. But even if I could save 10%, wouldn't you spend $11 to fly full fledged airline? I'm flying at dinner time, and the meal itself would be worth more then that. Plus I get FF points for the flight itself. And the QF statement credit for Amex. And 5 bonus FF points for QF gift cards on atm (I bought a $700 gift card to activate the statement credit). Plus I used the Qantas Price Promise on a Sta Travel screenshot, netting me an additional 1000 FF points. Plus bonus FF points for Qantas purchases on my Amex. I def did my calculations. =]

          @KayDat:

QF listed at $110 and JQ came up at $109

I'm guessing the $109 Jetstar fare was the 8:15pm flight? What I would have done is got Jetstar to pricebeat Tigerair's $69 fare, so your final price on Jetstar would have been $62 (and no CC fees), which is nearly half what you paid :)

        • +3

@tightarse: Yeah I considered that, but after my calculations, I decided to stick with QF. If I value QF FF pts at 1.4c ea (I'm planning on only using them for travel), see:

800 FF pts for the flight = $11.20
          $150 (Amex statement credit) / $700 (total GC value) * $110 (flight cost) = ~$23.57
          5 FF pts (bonus for GC) * $110 = $7.70
$0.03 price match with Sta Travel ;]
          1000 FF pts = $14
          One bonus QF pt per $ on Amex * $110 = $1.54

That adds up to ~$58 of value, meaning (to me) the flight only cost ~$52. I admit Qantas haven't gotten back to me confirming the price match yet (3c is quite low… lowest I've done in the past is $3.21 difference), but even if I take away the 1000 FF pts, I still figure it's close enough to be a wash. Plus the meal, and comfort over JQ.

Also, you don't pay CC fees when purchasing QF gift cards.

        • +2

@KayDat: Yep, you make some valid points. Each to their own I guess. Have a great day :)

        • +1

          @KayDat:

the meal itself would be worth more then that

I'm not so sure the pasta slop in a box I had recently on QF785 was worth $11.

        • +1

@muncan: Yeah, the actual value is questionable… but you're definitely paying more than $11 if you get a meal in JQ. It's a bit hard to place a value on comfort… but let's try anyway.

Let's peg the cost of warm sludge-in-a-box at $2. Flight time is ~85 min. Question is if you would pay ~11c per minute for comfort? Then there's other intangibles such as terminal and aerobridge access. And really, if I wanted to max out the value I could keep asking for drinks and snacks. It really wouldn't be too hard to get $11 of value in snacks and drinks over a ~1.5h flight if you don't mind being annoying to the air stewards.

Oh, I forgot about checked luggage as well (not that I'm using it for this flight).

I'm not ragging on budget airlines, I think they're great. I just think it's worth doing the calculations first to know what you get and what you miss out on.

        • [@KayDat] (/comment/4253000/redir):

          And you get luggage.

        • [@KayDat](/comment/4253073/ Also Amex qantas $150 back for $700 spent.
Plus the peace and quiet, plus the better seating, plus saving of half hour at the gate plus peace of mind of being taken care of if plane issues….worth to check out - not the cheapest just because they claim budget

        • +1

Remember if 2 people+ are travelling together you are better off booking 1 heavy bag, than 2 lighter bags.

          ie 50kg $37 vs 2 x 25kg @ $25 each.

Jetstar have an unlimited number of bags, and as long as you check in together, as per normal, you will simply share the weight.

        • @eatwell365: Yep and why not fly business class, its only another few more dollars.

        • +1

          @RockyRaccoon:

its only another 5-7 times the cost.

          Fixed that for you.

btw Qantas have honoured the 1000 FF points, but not my 3c. =]

    • As soon as you add baggage :(

    • Maybe the ozb rules should be updated to require mentioning costs with AND without checked baggage in the deal title.

Pretty great prices. Just ashame that these deals are not available in the school holidays.

  • Is this deal a direct counter to Tigerair $30 sale?

  • Brilliant, $150 return to watch the cows play in Townsville.

    Cheers TA :)

    • which game?

        rd1 vs Raiders mate.

  • Anyone else get to the "extras" page and get stuck? All I'm seeing is the booking summary :S

    EDIT Booked it, thanks OP!

  • Book a flight to Manila for half of what I usually pay. Thanks OP.

Never got my $100 business credit :( I applied and got a confirmation email before some of the times others posted in the thread so should have been within the first 1000.

  • thanks got 198 for 2 rtn to Launceston… nice way to see that part of Australia.

  • I'm glad I got the Qantas flights to hawaii from this deal - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/276371

After replicating the same dates on Jetstar with luggage I would have only saved $70 and deduct meals, really hardly any savings at all.
