I just bought 1 litre for 20 bucks as a top up last weekend.

      BMW Longlife-01
      VW 502 00/ 505 00
      MB-Approval 229.3/ 229.5

look at your manual and see what specs it needs

      • +1

Prolly need 504/507 like most VW's.

        • hi, what does 504/507 mean?

        • +1

          @chopstickninja:

VW have their own approval system so rather than just asking for 5W30 they will tell you you need to use 502.00 or 505.00 or what mini is suggesting, 504.00 or 507.00

make sure what you use meets those

        • @AndrewRox22:
Thanks for the info much appreciated

    • just realised this is for 10L not 5l Wow!

  • +13

    No good for cooking though

    • About the only other negative for this deal is you have nowhere to contain the old oil since it's a massive vat haha

  • -2

Don't tell anyone else but catalogue says deal starts Thursday 8 Dec

    • +3

The catalogue starts Thursday but the two oils mentioned in this post are only on sale for 2 days (if you follow the link in the post but close the popup you'll see the 2 day sale box at the top left of the catalogue page)

      • Oh IC. Might try my luck on Thursday anyway. They'll sell out within an hour or two on Friday morning for sure

    • I was just about to say so

  • +1

Works out to $25/5L bottle, which is $5 cheaper than their usual specials :)

    • +2

only downside is trying to pour and measure from a 10L carboy

      • +1

The oil has a density of ~850g/L. If you have a accurate 0-10kg scale just do it by weight instead.

        • This is actually a great tip, thanks!

      • for me its what container i put used oil in….usually 4L packs - empty into engine and then fill with drained oil into said packs and take'em to the recycle centre… will need few empty 4L etc packs now .

  • Ouch just paid $59.99 for 5L at SCA price matched to autobarn half hour ago. But this was for 5w40.

    • the EDGE 5W40 is a better oil, not on special as often as the 5W30

      • -1

        thats subjective
depends on the stage of engine life

        • +1

as a general API grade it's better…. 5W30 EDGE is only SL and shouldn't be used in cars needing SM or SN grades, the 5W40 variant is SN and can be used in all cars asking SN, SM, SL, etc etc etc

technicality but always follow the manual

  • Do these oil go off or have a shelf life? planning to stock up on a few but planning to use it on services which is on a yearly interval. Should I buy more than 2?

    • You can but make sure it's a cool dry place. What I have read Oil dosent like to be in a 70 Degree yard shed for 2 years more because it could take in moisture when it's heating and cooling. If you store off the floor it in a cupboard in your garage will be fine for years and years.

      • -1

I thought oil was hydrophobic? Brake fluid on the other hand….

        • Oil's been sitting idle underneath the ground for millions of years, what's another couple of years?

        • @mini2:

Just give it a good shake.

        • Diff oil mostly gets changed from the heating a cooling cycle bringing. in moisture. We're talking years here. I just think if you have the option of a stable dry environment you go with that.

        • @mini2:

          This is synthetic.

      • I don't know how a fully sealed oil in plastic container can absorb moisture when air can't even get in.

What's important is the additives in the oils. When they age, they are don't work too well. So 5 years top.

  • This is a great deal for me as it suits our petrol car and our diesel car. Good oil if your diesel needs b4 spec only.

  • -1

    Too thin for summer…

    • Just means the engine will burn a little oil. That doesn't do no harm

      • No but if its too thin the wear surfaces will not be as well protected.

        • depends on the engine, most newer cars are now even being serviced with 5W30/40 oils or thinner and they are suitable for all temp ranges from -30 to 50+ degrees….

        • @AndrewRox22:

Because manufacturers are trying to get the fuel economy headline, they ain't so concerned about the longevity of the engine beyond say 10 years\ 200,000km

        • +1

          @hoxygt:

you'll actually have more wear with a oil too thick during start up, a 5W oil actually allows everything to be lubricated faster especially in newer cars with the tiny passages

the 2000+ Toyota camry base engines were some of the first asking for 5W oils and many are still on the road now so evidence doesn't suggest so…..

same with my accord with 240,000km with 5W30 oil

but remember it's only the second number that the oil runs at when it's at operating temp so my 5W40 oil will be the same thickness as your 10W40 oil at operating temp or only slightly thinner than 15W45 oil at operating temp….

the quick lubrication at start up is what is important….. the only thing we dont need in Aus is the 0W oils that they are filling cars with now

        • @AndrewRox22:
the only thing we dont need in Aus is the 0W oils that they are filling cars with now

Is there a problem with 0W oils in AU?

        • +1

          @bigticket:

          problem? no but not necessary

5W and 0W oils are to ensure cars in places with snow like Europe and parts of US have oil that will slow to lubricate the cold engines in the US…

          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uQ_vxdO_9nc

you want your oil to be pumped up to small passages of your engine as soon as you start the car but also be protective when at operating temp

good economy figures with thin oil though

        • @AndrewRox22:

I used Mobile 1 5W-50 in a VS Commodore since new (V6), 430,000km later, it still uses a couple hundred ml of oil per 10,000km like it always has.

      • Double negatives do harm.

  • Is this suitable for 2012 hyundai i30 CRDI diesel engine?

    • Why don't you look it up in your owner's manual?

    • 2012 is between 2 series of i30…. if your car has a DPF, i wouldn't….

    • If it is a gd with a dpf then no. I have an FD without a dpf should be ok. But I'm just a guy on the internet. Better go with the castrol lube guide it'll tell you if it's compatible.

      • Unfortunately, mine is GD version.

  • Honda Accord 2000?
Can u use any codes for this?

    • Been using this for my Accord Euro for many years already.

    • Service manual recommends 98-00 Accord use 5W-30, 01-02 says 5W-20.
      Looks like we're in luck.

  • Nice, would it be a bad idea to mix this with Penrite 5w30 full syn? Got a couple of liters left over but not enough for a oil change….

    • Should be fine if both oils meets the specs of the engine.

  • When u register online they give u $5? Can that be combined and be lick and collect?

    • +6

Not advisable to lick and collect. YMMV.

      • +1

based on your display picture I guess this is from experience

  • Recommended for Dualis too.

  • anyone know will supercheap/autobarn match?

    • 10l not listed on sca's webpage… and autobarn dont list products haha

  • Bummer, can't use this for my ix35 diesel.
