Work desktops for about 1k each

Hi All,

Helping out a small business who was about to pay Harvey Norman $4.5k for 2 desktop PCs.

They are based in Ultimo - who should I tell them to go see? Umart? MSY? Lenovo/Dell online?

For the tower, comments on this minimum spec list appreciated.

  • min 8 GB ram
  • some form of SSD hdd
  • ignore graphics card (not video/graphic heavy business)
  • 6th gen i5 minimum
  • require windows 10
  • 2 yr warranty

Chrs

After building my own PC with similar specs plus GPU for $900, I'd say 1k and I'd do it for you if u were in melb :)

HN are rip offs, and we're professionals :)

You build me a PC for $1k, and I'll be on your back for 3 years about support.

    Have you considered nuc's?

Add ram, storage of your choice and os.

    Mount it behind the monitor.

I'd look at the Dell Factory outlets for new Optiplex PCs, even refurbished They are most likely cancelled orders or returns, new or like new.

You only get a 1 year warranty, but I find Optiplex's are reliable and come with next business day warranty. Plus, with most computer products, I find that any hardware issues will pop up in the first month or two, after that, they are reliable for the next 5+ years (and by then they are upgraded).

    Probably going to get flamed…
I'd suggest going with Dell or HP and getting the service warranty.

    • Can't agree with you more. HP business warranty is great.

For business desktops you definitely want to go with someone who can provide good after-sale service. One should ask the question "how much is it going to cost the business if one of the desktops is down for 3 days due to fried motherboard or crashed hard drive?" and OP definitely doesn't want to be the point of contact to provide supports (unless he will be paid, but that has to be factored into the cost).

I build high performance PC's for a hobby. I never, ever, build a PC for work. All work desktop PC's come out of a box with HP EliteDesk on them with a 3yr onsite warranty.

For dribs-and-drabs, do what others have suggested - go to Dell Factory Outlet and you'll get an Optiplex for a reasonable price.

You should consider laptops that suit your requirements as an alternative to desktops. We all moved to laptops here at work and couldn't be happier.

+1 for something like a Dell, you need that in-house next day service that comes with their business grade machines

Something like this? Add $79 for 4 year warranty and a bit more for a monitor puts you over the $1k budget but they have all you need and look pretty cool:

You could get something cheaper if you drop your requirements to 4gb of ram. Everyone at my office has 4gb + ssd hard drives and we have no issues with web browsing, spreadsheets etc.

How many laptops/pcs are you after?
    Where are you located?
A friend of mine is a wholesaler for small Businesses. How usually doesn't do 1 or 2 laptops so if its a decent number he should be able to provide a good quote.. PM me if interested..

Just saw you are in Syd.. will have to check if he caters as he is in Melb. But would you be interested?

  • All appreciated people - just for 2 PCs coolhead so no good but thanks anyway.

Also thanks for the reminder not to get too involved, always important.

Note building your own desktop generally you need to get your own copy of Windows

  • Why not laptops?
