One of my fav pc games of all time, thanks for sharing! :)

    • +1

What's the game like? I've never played it before….

      • +1

Very old top down dungeons and dragons style rpg. Very well thought out and the combat log details everything.

Young me didn't realise how really great it was back then.

A little bit slow compared to other rpgs but still great nonetheless.

        • I've only played Dungeons and Dragons in real life once and we all died….

        • @Zachary:

          Well..

      • The Star Wars KOTOR games are built off this engine if you ever played those.

        • Ooh, yes - I have played both KOTOR I and II! So the gameplay and graphics is similar to that? Or ..has it changed significantly…?

        • @Zachary: KOTOR is newer and more refined. NWN has more focus on the D&D rules and gameplay. It's also more aged for sure mechanically and graphically, and the story isn't as good. But you will definitely notice similarities and familiar gameplay elements. KOTOR is very much built on the foundations that NWN set.

        • @enceladus94:

Oh cool, I might like it then! Will give it a shot when I find time for it! ☺

    good old days

    • Yep, don't make then like they used to. Great manual as well.

Any1 know if multiplayer still works? wouldn't mind doing a co-op through one of those expansions if any1 is keen

    • Possibly? The store page lists it as multiplayer.

    • +3

IIRC it does but you need to join directly via IP as the central servers are down.

    • It used Gamespy I think? Gamespy is defunct now.

It would still work if anyone was still playing it, which is unlikely since it's 14 years old.

      • +1

It would still work if anyone was still playing it, which is unlikely since it's 14 years old.

Believe it or not but there are very active RP servers out there. Search "Amnia" IIRC.

      • 573 players online right now

        http://www.nwnlist.com/#

You need to use your CD key from gog library to get into multiplayer as the authorization servers are still online but like you said the server list used Gamespy so you must utilize this website and the 'direct ip' button to connect in

The mods make this game. I enjoyed a lot of the mods more than the main storyline!

    Good post, thanks OP!

    Well worth it
    Thanks m1racle

  • +3

I can't remember anything about it. I guess best let it go. So little time

  • +1

    Cool but I'm playing Fallout 4 \o/

  • I have created account and clicked the button to claim it but when I got to library, it's empty.

Does it takes time to be added in the library?

    • it will be instantly sent to your account tab

      • +1

Well, it wasn't that instant for me but in this morning, it's up now! Thanks for the comment.

  • Same. Wasn't added immediately. Hopefully will be in there soon.

Not as good as Baldur's Gate series, but a well-polished AD&D RPG all the same.

    • +1

      Baldurs was the shiznik.

My beef with NWN is the official campaign. It was just so uninspired.

Chapter 1.. You need 4 reagents. There happens to be 4 areas you can go to. Each one coincidentally happens to have one reagent.

Chapter 2. Same deal. Rinse and repeat.

The scripting in the game is not extensive enough. Each chapter really is its own separate campaign, instead of one connected series. I say this because a chapter cannot reference decisions you made in previous chapters. The way it gets around this is by giving you campaign items as a result of choices you made or quests you completed. The later campaign will check whether you have that item, and then decide accordingly how to proceed.

Let's say you helped an old lady and she gives you a flower in chapter 1. If you see her again in Chapter 2, the game will check if you are still carrying that quest item, and if you are, she will be more grateful and give you another quest. If not, she won't talk to you. In an Infinity Engine game, all the variables from previous chapters would be global and carry over. But NWN chapter 2 is a whole separate module from chapter 1 and can't look into any variables from chapter 1. The only workaround they can use to tell if you helped the old lady is by looking to see if you have the flower. But you could have done the quest and got rid of the flower or sold it, and chapter 2 module will think you never helped her in chapter 1. That is not a very robust campaign creator.

As a whole the entire campaign felt very disjointed. I understand why they designed it that way. It's the only way amateurs can make a campaign, because the tools needed to make BG are complex and beyond what an amateur can use. But it does mean that the official campaign is disappointing.

The other thing that bothered me, and is a byproduct of the tools is the tilesets. Infinity Engine games being 2D prided themselves on being 100% rendered, not tiled. Each area has to be rendered by hand. They do reuse some interiors, but the land and building exteriors are all unique. NWN is 100% tiled. You're going to see the same ground textures, the same trees, the same rocks, same houses, same doors, same everything over and over again. None of it will look new. Again, I understand that this is the only way you can make tools useable by average Joe Gamer. But it does mean Bioware hasn't impressed me like they have in games where they did not include a toolset and instead used better but harder to use tools.

The NWN games are not on the pedestal that the games before it and the games after it are on. And that is because it was marketed as not just a campaign but a toolset for creating your own campaigns. As someone not interested in creating or playing fan made campaigns, all I got from it was the official campaign and I didn't like it all that much.

The loss of 6 character parties that you can control directly is another thing I lament. You can have 2 henchmen max (I think only one in NWN1's campaign) and you can't control them.

I'm still waiting for Bioware to make another 6 character RPG like the D&D days of old. Dragon Age is the closest they've come to it.

      • No love for Pillars of Eternity?

        • It's great.

But I was referring to Bioware's games.

Pillars is probably the best of this kind of game since BG2 and IWD2.

By "this kind of game" I mean isometric party based RPG with morality system. I'm looking forward to Torment also.

      • they're going to keep you waiting my friend.

        • I know. They turned their focus to consoles, and this kind of game is suited to PC. Dragon Age Origins console version was so neutered.

I think this ship has sailed. If we get another BG type game, it will have to come from an indie dev through Kickstarter. Pillars, Torment, and Divinity series have stepped in to fill that void, but Bioware isn't going to make another one of these probably ever.

      • Agree wholeheartedly with all those points, they all made NWN1 very much unmemorable for me, so much so that I did not bother touching NWN2 at all.

        • +1

I bought NWN2 but couldn't get over how ugly the faces were in character creation. I'm not joking, there's not a single non-ugly face you can choose from.

      • Both the main campaign for Neverwinter Nights and Neverwinter Nights 2 were dull, however the expansions for those games were a lot better and very enjoyable.

        • I did not enjoy Undrentide. The first chapter you play, you need to find 3 reagents artifacts. Oh and there also happens to be 3 areas you can go to. Sound familiar?

        • @lostn: Why would it take you to an area you don't need to go to? Just for a stroll?

        • @FabMan: I'm saying it's using the exact same formula as the much maligned NWN original campaign. It's unimaginative and repetitive. If you didn't like NWN OC, you're just getting more of that. They do eventually drop this structure for later chapters though.

BG and BG2 didn't do that formula. Those were amazing games in ways NWN was not and could never be, because of its module creator limitations.

To answer your question: Maybe side quests? Optional dungeon that gives cool rewards?

        • @lostn: Yeah, I wasn't the biggest fan of Unrentide because of what you mentioned, but it was an improvement on the main campaign.

I'm looking forward to Tyranny going on sale.

  • +1

Don't worry if the game isn't added immediately guys, it took about 10 minutes before my order was processed and NWN added to my collection.

    • +1

I've been waiting for more than 2 hours but still cannot find it in my account.

      • Same

    • +1

      Worked straight away for me.

  • Freebie!!! Thanks op

  • Fantastic game and it runs natively on Linux which is even better. One of the first big title games that did from memory.

I still have the box set somewhere, but might sign up and get it just in case.

  • Thanks OP.

  • Ok, got one, need to stop looking at that page now before I get in trouble :).

  • +1

I remember loving the D&D CRPGs 15 years ago. They were some of the best. But NWN was a disappointment after BG and BG2. The campaign tools were just not robust enough. It was good for creators because there's no way an amateur can make something with the Infinity Engine, but the official campaigns they came with are not as good as the IE games. I saw NWN as so promising but ultimately a letdown.

Still, this is a great deal.

Something that rubbed me the wrong way with NWN is the milking of its collections. When the first expansion came out, they released a Gold edition which included it. When the second expansion released, they made a Platinum Edition. When more other extras released, they did a Diamond Edition.

Wait till everything is out before you do a Gold edition please.

  • Mine appeared right away.

    Thanks!!

Will have fun working with Fenthick.

  • An aside - if you already have it (purchased it, or got it for free for pre-ordering The Witcher 3) then you'll be sent a gift code for the game to give to someone else.

  • I preferred NWN to BG and BG2 :p

    Character building was much better.
BG and BG2 I think I had very high expectations as I played it long after release (in high res using bgtutu). I never clicked with them storywise. Plus, the boss' name in BG2.. really!

    • But it's ok for the lord commander of the Night's Watch to have the same name?

      • So long as it's not the ultimate spoiler spelt in reverse…

        • Eh? What's the spoiler?

        • @lostn:

I might have something wrong? Bad memory and played it 10+ years ago.. Sarevok/koveras

        • @justtoreply:

I might have something wrong? Bad memory and played it 10+ years ago.. Sarevok/koveras

          That was BG1.

          BG2's boss is Jon Irenicus.

You had me totally confused. I thought you didn't like that a fantasy character would have a name like Jon, thus the Lord Commander comment.

  • Can this game be activated on steam?

    • +1

No. Steam doesn't sell this game.

  • +1

    Potentially silly question.

Whats the difference between Neverwinter Nights and Neverwinter Nights Diamond?

    • Expansion packs and other modules.

They released a Gold edition and Platinum edition before the Diamond btw..

      • I see…its like Gold edition.

Should be nice I finished the vanilla version with Ranger Cleric.

        • +1

They had multiple expansions and they released Gold/Plat/Diamond after each one. That seriously rubbed me the wrong way.

        • @lostn:

Can you recommend a good expansion to play?

By expansion…do you mean a whole new campaign?

        • @tsunamisurfer: Yes whole new campaign.

Hordes of the Underdark was the best. It added a sky… and also up epic levels (up to lv 40). It updated to D&D 3.5 I believe. Which adds more depth.

  • what is the age rating of this game

    • +1

Errrmmm… 9-99?!! Can't remember any coarse language or sexual reference in it.

  • I already own this game on GOG, but I can recommend it to others. Make sure you download the fan made mods/adventures for this game. There are dozens of excellent fan made expansions.
