Was looking around at saving money on my power bill recently. Anyone have any experience with these guys?

  • +7

IS this a $200 credit to your account? Or just off the first month's bill? I don't spend $200 a month on electricity !

    • should be clarified, especially if it is the latter.

  • Interesting concept…

How long is this offer available for? (I couldn't find the T&Cs on the website). Thanks.

    • +1

they've added expiry to the deal of Dec 31st.

Thanks - some clarification around what happens to any excess of the $200 if the first month is less than that would be appreciated too.

Is it carried forward to the next month? Or is this effectively one month free up to a $200 limit?

        • +1

lack of clarification is sloppy. This deal has been live for over a week now.

        • @MikeHunt:
Yeah - given the rep responded to my first query in 2 minutes, I feel like they don't want to clarify… which makes me hesitant to consider them at all.

I also wondered what happens for those with solar. Say you had $200 usage and $100 generation in the first month, does that mean the bill is a $100 credit or $0 etc. But if they can't answer the first question it's not much point asking more complex ones!

        • @Evil-Elmo:

re-reading the T&C's "Coupon is for A$200 credit to be applied to your first month’s bill …" would seem to mean that:
          1. its a credit to the bill, not usage (i.e. bill is supply charge + usage - solar credits).
          2. it cant be carried over. The credit is to the first month's charge.

        • @MikeHunt:
I agree with point 1, but in relation to point 2 I'd normally expect credits to be carried to the next month. If I overpay and leave the account in credit I'd expect that overpayment to go to the next month for example.

Do NSW or QLD have a government comparison site like https://compare.switchon.vic.gov.au/ where you can upload your smart meter data file?

  • +6

This mob claim to offer "wholesale" energy prices to consumers (but you're forced to buy a non-refundable "membership" in order access said prices) and have pretty diagrams to show how their retail markup is lower than the other resellers.

YMMV, but I did some calculations based on my household usage and it was actually more expensive, given they don't appear to offer pay on time discounts (in SE Qld I believe 11% is around the highest you'll get).

If you want customers, why not just sell energy cheaper than your competitors without this membership bullhonky?

    • +3

Haven't done the proper calculations yet but theres only one reason for an energy pass model and that is to make comparison harder. That usually means customer is worse off. You can see daily supply charge is lower but with non refundable annual energy pass you might be worse off unless you time your exit right. On time discount is an excellent point too. Will crunch the numbers later. Might still be a deal here if certain factors are properly considered.

      • I think it's because IPART sets the pricing, and there are only certain ways they can offer discounts etc.

      • Crunched the numbers and as expected not very competitive at all. In fact, considering the guaranteed expenditure of at least $280 per year it's way too much risk to seriously consider for most people. As you can see I've included Solar in my personal calculations but I've then looked at it without solar and DODO will still be just as competitive no matter your usage. NO DEAL (in Queensland that is).

  • This didn't go very well last time either - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/272012 = 5neg 3pos

Pretty much everyone calculating theirs (unless they have a big family and use a buttload of power) were calculating that it wasn't worth it…

    • +1

Thanks for linking the previous deal - but what's the reason for the neg?

For some people (not sure if I'm in this category or not yet) this could well work out cheaper per month with a $200 credit. The deal obviously doesn't work well for very light electricity users, but that doesn't mean it's no good for everyone?

      • +2

You're right - it might be good for some people… but the OP hasn't provided any kind of evidence that it's good for anyone or how it compares to other providers… so in reality, this just seems like advertising to me - in fact they LITERALLY copied and pasted the previous "ad".

OK deal if you remember to quit immediately after the first year.

For single tariff in SE QLD & ends up costing me $57 a year more than what I pay for Dodo (inc. 15% pay on time discount). Everyone's situation will differ, but that means a bit over $140 saved in the first year. But any year after that, it is MORE expensive than the so-called "expensive" providers they are supposedly undercutting.

In the end… not going to bother for all this hoop jumping. I can recommend Dodo for SEQ - cheapest provider.

It is a tricky deal or may be not a deal.

    • But for some people (high electricity users) it likely is a deal…

  • Their monthly EnergyPass fee is stupidly high and kill any savings on the power usage. You pay at least $0.767 per day to access their 'lower wholesale rate'.
If they can do their EnergyPass at $10/month it will be more attractive.

Their monthly EnergyPass fee is stupidly high and kill any savings on the power usage.

This depends entirely on how much electricity you use… not a reason to neg the deal in my personal view.

Of course $10 a month would be more attractive, but this price point may also be attractive to high electricity users.

      • pleae do the maths before making uninformed comments that could possibly mislead fellow ozb. This is not a deal. Happy to be challenged on this.

        • I'll admit I haven't crunched the numbers properly yet. However, the off peak rate with these guys is cheaper than with Dodo even with the 15% off. So, if you use enough off peak (in my case off peak is more than 50% of my usage) that could, at least in theory, be cheaper.

Also - please bear in mind that I never said this was a good deal. Just that it likely is a deal or may be attractive for high electricity users. Of course each person considering it should look at their own situation and whether it's good (or not) for them first.

          @Evil-Elmo:
          - Nothing mentioned in this post about monthly EnergyPass fees
          - Instead of a more sophisticated price comparison, they only have a very simple slider bar "calculator" to make false savings claim to potential customers
          - DO Your Maths:
In my case (SEQ) they are only $0.00966 cheaper /kW on T33 (off-peak). EnergyPass will cost $0.767 per day. That means I have to use >80kW offpeak PER DAY to break even with my current plan, or
I have to use a massive >113kW peak power PER DAY to start to see any savings.

Unless you run some meth lab at home I can't see you'd use such amount of power.

based on 26.7 kWh/day (21.5% peak, 54.0% shoulder, 24.5% off peak), in NSW (Ausgrid) TOU tariffs, I have:
        AGL 20% disc $542pq
        Dodo 20% disc $520pq
Mojo $520pq (assuming $0.767 per day for the basic energy pass paid in advance).

So Mojo are in line with Dodo for this usage and tariff type.
I have not factored in the $200 coupon after which Mojo would be ahead (just for the first year).

  • I tried to transfer to this mob. 20 working days (about a month) had elapsed and they hadn't even started my transfer from AGL.
Admittedly there were some issues with my tariff type that had to be sorted with Ausgrid.
But they never contacted me to say there was a problem, or what they were doing to sort it. I had to initiate all communication. Got sick of it and exercised my cooling off rights. I need my meter changed because I have solar and I was not looking forward to contacting them constantly and getting excuses.
Based on what I know now, I would rather eat broken glass than sign up with these guys.

    • Good to know. I think the level of responsiveness from the rep in this thread might have been the writing on the wall…
