In SEQ Disconnection & reconnection fee of $108.87 in SEQ…
    WT?

    • +1

Isn't that if you disconnected your service (turn off electricity) or re-connect (turn it back on)?
It doesn't apply if you switch providers as you do not lose service (disconnect) and turn it back on (reconnect).

EDIT - Maybe the REP could clarify if this applies if we come on board with Mojo.

      • that's correct Alister

  • Im with Dodo Energy atm as I find them the cheapest, anyone else on the Gold Coast with Dodo and are looking at Mojo? Wanna find out if they are better or not

    • +1

I'm with Dodo too (Brisbane area, same pricing as Gold Coast).
Considerable saving on daily supply charge and KW/H rate. Basically the more you use, the more the savings with Mojo.
Personally I'd go with the $35p/m plan with Mojo, $45p/m plan starts eating into my savings. $55p/m Mojo plan wouldn't really save me anything.

      • +2

I think there's some confusion here… the EnergyPass Plan thing… that just gives you "access" to their "wholesale rates"… they don't actually include any usage in that or give you credit towards usage from what I can see.

Once you factor the disconnect and reconnect fees… then the usage rates & the subscription fee… I honestly don't see how this is a deal for most people.

        • Ahhh so say you use $300 worth a power per quarter then you need to pay an extra $45 p/m which is x 3 so $135 on top of the $300 worth of power?

        • @Twisty:

Yes the idea is you pay an access fee to get the cheaper per kwh rates, so if you use enough power you would in theory save…. but if you don't use enough you will not save enough to cover the access rate.

From my calculation I would need to use a lot more power before breaking even.

It's an interesting concept, but IMHO not going to work out cheaper for most people if they actually look at the numbers.

  • +1

So it costs from $280/year just to access the supply from Mojo? And you don't get any electricity included in that?

    • +3

Correct - you buy a "membership" to access wholesale rates. For me using 1800-1900kw/h a quarter, the savings aren't stellar as I have to still pay Mojo $35p/m and then still pay for my electricity usage and supply charge to the provider. The $200 credit the poster provided is a nice incentive.

EDIT - hang on, I only see reference to a $35p/m plan which is $420 a year. I have seen the $280 p/a mentioned on the website but what plan is that???

      • +3

$280/year is the $35/month plan, with a discount applied.

    • Subscription is $35 per month which is $420/year.(in NSW)
not sure, if it varies by state

      • Annually
        $280/YEAR
        inc. GST
4 months free when paid annually upfront. Save $140

  • +4

I just did a rough calculation using my latest AGL statement of 96 days usage / 1310 kWh in NSW on the Savers plan (10% Double Up Discount + 2% Double Up + Pay On Time Discount) ..

    I paid $349.63

Calculating with Mojo with the doubt that i'm using the cheapest tariff i would be paying $374.64!!!

    • And this would only get worse as I move in to summer and there's less electricity use (away from electric heaters)

      • you are using 14 kWh/day which is already very low!

  • +1

Something is going on here that needs clarification. The website mentions $280 is the fee to get on board with Mojo but looking deeper, $420 p/a ($35p/m) is quoted as the minimum. See here for QLD.

Minimum $280/year upfront (save $140) or $35 a month is what it says on their site.

  • +1

    So is this basically:

1.Change to Mojo and pay their subscription monthly fees
    2. Jack up heaters/air-conditioning for maximum saving by taking advantage of their lower usage/supply charges.
    3. Profit!!?

    • +1

Run a lead to your neighbours split the membership fees .. WIN!

      • Get a green extension lead and 🙊

    By my calculations:

AGL: 30days with supply and 202khw usage (minus DD discount, Pay on Time discount and Guaranteed discount) = $79 a month
Mojo: 30 days with supply and 202khw usage (including base $35 Subscription fee) = $93 a month

If you pay the $280/year base subscription = $23.33 a month

Then Mojo would still be $81 a month… still no dice.

    No sale.

    • You are using 7 kWh/day. Obviously no pool, aircon, heater, electric hot water etc.

      • +1

Sadly no space for a pool, lol and yeah only fairly intermittent aircon

what's stupid they charge a monthly fee but they also charge daily supply charge. I think they should review their pricing and include those two in a single monthly fixed price.

even more stupid they charge two daily supply charges. one for your main usage and another one for the controlled load.

It puzzles me they establish a business but they don't understand their clientele. From their pricing structure it's obvious Mojo is not for mums and dads (who don't understand wholesale rates, kwh rates, daily charges etc). Mojo is for informed consumers who can compare retailers and figure out the total cost of their usage from the given rates. If you charge ten different fees informed consumer would back off as simple as that. Confusing pricing/multiple fees could fool the average joe but can you based your business model on that?

The below quote is taken from the link above:
"This means it’s simply not in our interest for you to use more energy. Instead, our focus is on providing you with the best service and tools to help you monitor, manage and reduce your energy consumption. An energy company that wants you to use less energy, weird right?"

Not weird at all… why they would think people find it weird is beyond me. They are charging you a set monthly fee ranging from $35 and above, they would certainly hope that you do not use anything, then they are providing you basically nothing for $35 a month. Profit!

This mojo thing is just a scheme of offloading the high usage to a set of monthly fees. It might suit a group of high usage user, but certainly not low usage consumer. I mean, I could start up an electricity company tomorrow and charge $200 per month access fee but 5c/kwh, and I would encourage my users to use less energy, weird right?

Remove the monthly fee and we have a deal.

    • spot on. except your last sentence. if they remove the monthly fee they wouldn't offer low kwh rates and they would be indifferent to other small retailers.

I think the idea is good but their pricing structure needs more work.

plus they offer smart meters which informed tech-savvy high usage consumers would like to have.

      • if they remove the monthly fee they wouldn't offer low kwh rates

I meant removing the monthly fee but still offering the low rates, then it would genuinely be a deal.

Right now it is just a scam of shifting the kwh usage charge to a fixed monthly fee, and they shamelessly try to trick customers with catchy words like 'an energy company that wants you to use less energy'.

        • It would be a good deal for us but not for them :) Retail margins are not big to offer us those rates without any fees. They wouldn't survive.

Roughly you bill consists of 50% is network cost, 30% is generation (wholesale) cost, 10% cost of renewable etc schemes and 10% retail margin (plus and minus 5%). They really don't have much to play with.

  • To save money I cut off all electricity. Just like that I was in the black.

  • Where on the web site does it mention this $200 credit and it's T&Cs?
Where do you enter this promo code OL200? The only field in the application form is Referral Code.
Is this deal actually a referral spam?

  • I was already going to Mojo before I stumbled on this code. Thanks Mojo / Ozbargain!
Mojo came in cheapest on the www.energymadeeasy.gov.au/ comparison website for my bill.
Compared with AGL in NSW on a Time of Use tariff with 20% discount (my current plan), Mojo's peak is 11% cheaper, shoulder 15% cheaper and offpeak 3% cheaper.
Supplycharge (including the cost of the Mojo EnergyPass paid in advance but determined as a rate per day) is 68% more (or about $0.50 per day).
In summary, if your quarterly bill is over about $400 Mojo is cheaper than AGL (but make your own comparisons - as several others have done above!).

By the way, upgrading to a smart meter for $10/mo extra seems a waste of money. You can buy a Watts Clever for about $75 outright (effectively does most of the things that smartmeter does). Check it is compatible with your existing meter first. Mine is.
